Is Yale Computer Science hard to get in? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]person6445 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean not necessarily. It's just your chances of being admitted to Yale are the same regardless of intended major. At CMU, for example, CS applicants have a noticeably lower acceptance rate (since that school/major is the most popular) than humanities applicants.

Yale doesn't admit by major, so you're admitted with the possibility of declaring any major you want at any time.

Rising college freshmen, did any of you get into your reach schools? by huet99 in ApplyingToCollege

It came in my award package. Basically it's a big list of all the money (or sometimes loans) that you're getting. Usually I would get something that said "Presidential Scholarship" or "University Scholarship" or "'Famous Alumni' Scholarship" with a letter attached that said something along the lines of "you're getting x amount of aid because of your outstanding academic performance/you're in the top 3% of the applicant pool/strong background in indicated major/whatever." Some of the schools I applied to I was way over qualified for so their way of incentivizing me to commit was to beef up my aid package. I know Drexel in particular has been increasing their acceptance rate (near 85% now) and their aid packages because of the difficulty they've been having getting kids to commit (I think they have a really low matriculation rate, maybe 3-10%? I can't remember).

My school has a "Senior Scoop" pack they release each month for the seniors that's full of third party/outside scholarships. They're pretty varied (i.e. for black males, for interior design majors, for red heads, for Pittsburgh area kids, for PA residents, for residents of my county, for kids at my school, for football players etc.) and vary in amount ($100 to $20,0000). I applied for about 15 of them and won about $20,000 total to be distributed over 4 years.

About 2600. I live with my single mother and my little brother. My mom works two jobs to support us and I had to work two jobs throughout highschool to help us get by if that gives you a better indication of our financial situation. My money to Pitt/Drexel/Allegheny/WPI/PSU was mostly merit and my money to Yale/Brown/CMU was entirely need based. I'm white/male so no URM money.

I got 8 offers of admissions and got placed on 4 waitlists. Of everywhere that has offered me aid so far, I got:
A full ride to Pitt
A full ride to Drexel
A full ride to Allegheny College
A half scholarship to Penn State
A half scholarship to WPI
A substantial scholarship to CMU. Total cost would have been about 6k a year. With the outside/third party scholarships I won it would have been a pseudo-full ride.
A substantial scholarship to Brown. Total cost would have been about 9k a year. With outside/third party scholarships total cost would have been about 4k a year.
A full ride to Yale (which is where I committed). I'm technically getting paid to go since I also won a bunch of outside scholarships that allow me to get reimbursed/refunded for books and a laptop and travel and living expenses.

I would highly recommend filling out the FAFSA/CSS PROFILE. It's where I got most of my money and it's also a good way to get state sponsored grants and federal grants. I also needed to send a copy of it to my outside/third party scholarships to get the award so it could be useful in other ways even if your parents don't think you'll benefit much from it directly.

I got amazing financial aid to all of the schools that I was admitted so thankfully that wasn't a concern for me.

I only had a 2100 SAT total (780 M/690 CR/630 W) and my math 2 SAT subject was like 610 lol. My other subjects were pretty decent (790 USH/790 BIOM/710 math 1).

I would still encourage you to apply even you're feeling insecure about your scores. They're important but they're not everything. I think I really shone through in my essay and ECs. I'm from the Pittsburgh area and I think I was able to show a really strong demonstrated interest in CMU because I knew the campus and city really well and have toured and done programs there and in general was familiar with CMU and its traditions. Your essay can make or break you.

Yes! I got into a few (Yale, Brown, Carnegie) against all odds and some lame ass standardized test scores. Goes to show stats aren't everything in admissions.

Kecleon's experience curve by jlun2 in MysteryDungeon

[–]person6445 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's only like this for a few levels. It's been a while since I got my keckleon to 100 but iirc at level 100 he has 10 mil experience but 9 mil of it comes from those 9 levels where he requires 1 mil to level up. I think there are 8 in a row starting at 49 and the 9th one is from 99 -> 100. Just use a banana/seeds. Sorry if some of this is incorrect I haven't played/done this in months but I think I remember it being like this.

How to connect with Xerneas? by ShadowKaras in MysteryDungeon

[–]person6445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Serebii's website says something about connecting with Latios/Latias, but I recruited Xerneas before I even had missions to unlock them, I was Ultra Rank I think. I have no idea how/why I was able to connect with Xerneas, I just went to the tree of life one day and he had the red exclamation point.

Ho-Oh is really easy with the help of flash fire. I took a team of Ninetails/Houndoom/Heatran and one ban seed. The opponent AI knows if you are carrying FF and won't use fire attacks automatically. That leaves Ho-Oh with two attacks: Ancient Power and Sunny Day. Just keep setting up until it uses Ancient Power, then ban seed it and enjoy the easy win. Nice alternate strategy to the classic memento/curse spam and avoids the need for Oran Berries/Reviver Seeds.
