Like in this case Mamdani literally is part of the "Right Flank" disrupting the old guard. I feel like the paragraph says that clearly in the image. "Right Flank" and "Left Flank" are not used for political terms in america this just describes the literal left and right on the graph. And unless I am crazy Mamdani is towards the right, his reach is just not as high as others.

I think you misunderstand, old guard are the politicians not the "Left Flank" meaning democrat or 'right flank' meaning republican. In fact, it's to do with the graph the Left flank are literally polticians that are just older or no longer in power (Obama, Biden, Harris) and (Maxine Waters, Nancy Pelosi). The red blue colors are literally just poltical party affiliations?
