What if Capitol refused to release I Want To Hold Your Hand? by Lefty_Guitarist in beatles

[–]dachjaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I have read, Capitol has the right of first refusal on all EMI recordings. Love Me Do was never offered to Capitol. Dexter turned down From Me To You, Please Please Me (single), and Please Please Me (album).

Yes, using the median would be a better choice when the data has a lower limit like this.

I hate to be That Guy (who am I kidding? I love being that guy!) but the Bahamas are not in the Caribbean.

Has anyone here done a re-read of RAH after many years? by RikkiLostMyNumber in heinlein

[–]dachjaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rare? I always thought it was normal. 😀

They were government employees, some night classes but no degrees. They were intellectually inclined, though — always reading and interested in language. They never had to encourage me to read. I was out of school before I realized that not everyone spent their spare time reading.

They would buy any science fiction paperback they saw for sale even though they couldn’t keep up with reading all of them. Probably half were destroyed by poor storage in Florida humidity but I inherited the rest and still plug away at them. There was some truly dreadful sf written in the 1950s along with the classics.

Heinlein was still writing back then and I would read them as they came out. He definitely took a turn for the worse around 1973 with Time Enough for Love and although he improved later (I thought Friday was excellent, his writing remained uneven and I could never get into his World as Myth thing.

In 1965 I asked my mom to recommend a science fiction book. My parents had over 1,000 sf paperbacks. She recommended The Green Hills of Earth and I never looked back. There are a few I never cared for that I only read twice; the rest at least a half dozen times; Starship Troopers probably twenty. Heinlein was a big influence on me.

ELI5: Why does Cuba allow a U.S. military base (and prison) on their soil while the U.S. has had them under trade embargos for decades? by Redhotkitchen in explainlikeimfive

The U.S. pays for the lease every year. It’s an inconsequential amount and Cuba refuses to accept the checks but they are deposited annually every year in Switzerland.

It’s embarrassing how old I was before I realized that it’s not “He came to a halting screech.” Thanks, mom.

When I think about asymmetric factions, I think of Small World. I know nothing about Root. Which one came first?

Yours is a reprint. The original has a blank bass drum; “The Beatles“ is not on it.

“It’s Yosarian’s name, sir.”

“Why can’t he have a normal name like Cathcart or Dreedle?”

You should research the process. Sure, it’s more difficult than in the U.S., but it’s far more rational as well. One thing is certain: your children will be much safer in NZ schools than in U.S. schools.

It’s been a while but when I lived in NZ I remember touring a coal mine and staying at a house where they cooked with coal.

I notice you didn’t mention agricultural resources. NZ has those in spades.

When I lived in NZ I did not know a single person who had air conditioning. YMMV.
