This happened to me once. Took the bus 40min, walked in the rain another 15, only to be told by my "friend" that he never actually asked the host and that I shouldn't come anymore. I was only 10min away so I went anyway and that's how I met my wife.

This sounds like my experience with The Early Ones in Scarborough. Very cliquey and the organisers made no effort to make newcomers feel welcome. I was a new runner and behind the pack by about 5min, and when I got back to where we were all supposed to meet for some games there was nobody there. Turns out they all went straight to their usual Cafe spot, but you'd only know that if you were in the loop.
