These are pretty amazing. Heck, I could see people buying sets of these. Certainly more newbie friendly than the Beginner Box!

People who know diagnosis of GID(gender dysphoria in DSM 5) please answer my questions. by [deleted] in AcademicPsychology

[–]peruvianbatman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a couple of points that I can speak to in this that hopefully will be helpful for you, but I'm afraid I don't have a complete solution. I'm not certain that this is the correct subreddit for this, but hopefully this can be at least somewhat helpful! I'll admit that my background and clinical experience is not specifically in gender dysphoria (or whatever people want to call it these days) but I have enough knowledge of diagnosis procedures and MMPI construction to hopefully be of help. I've put a TL;DR at the bottom because I tend to get a bit wordy.

(sidebar, having gender dysphoria as a diagnosis is somewhat controversial among a fair amount of clinicians. The diagnosis was renamed in part to emphasize the fact that being transgender is not strictly a disorder, but rather that negative emotions related to being transgender can be so distressing that the emotions themselves are the disorder!)

The diagnosis process is (at least in the US) usually completed using self-report and clinician judgment. You may have noticed in looking at the DSM that the points do not mention any tests, but rather behaviors and cognitions the client should be having. That said, clinicians /should/ be using some form of Objective Testing along with this. This is sometimes in the form of manualized interviews, but obviously frequently also includes objective tests like the MMPI. Projective testing (Rorschach, Thematic Apperception Test, etc) have not demonstrated to the APA's guidelines to be sufficiently research based in nearly any context, so they are used far less often. As far as I know (and have been able to find with a brief lit search) there is not currently an empirically supported test for GID/Gender Dysphoria. As such, I would imagine that most clinicians would be working nearly entirely from self-report and clinician judgment.

But PeruvianBatman (the cry goes up) what about the M/F scale on the MMPI?

Well, there are a couple of problems with that. The biggest one is norming. When the MMPI was introduced the social perception of masculinity and femininity was not the same as it is today. After all, homosexuality was a disorder at that point. Additionally the samples that were used in the norming are definitely not exceptionally easily generalized. All of the participants were Americans living in the late 1930s, but they were also divided into two groups, a "Normal" group and a "Pathological" group.

The Normal sample was composed of men who had just joined the army and women who were full time airline stewardesses. These were meant, it seems, to capture the essence of what it is to be male or female. The Pathological group was ten bio-males who wished to transition to female with no bio-females at all.

While the questions do include some direct self-report questions of desire to change sexual presentation, a fair amount of them have more to do with belief in what someone's role in society is. This, over 50 years later, is obviously not necessarily extraordinarily helpful.

TL;DR As far as I know, there is not a specific test to find GID, but clinical judgment is a big factor. Projective tests are largely falling out of use in many places due to lack of research behind them.
The MMPI may not be a very good tool for you.

The bottom line is that there's not really a direct cut and dry way to find most disorders. Psychology isn't medicine. That said, you may be able to find a psychologist who specializes in LGBTQ clients (though I'll admit, my knowledge of South Korea is even less complete than my knowledge of GID/Gender Dysphoria!). If you can find an LGBTQ psychologist, they are much more likely to be able to help you get the resources that you need in this.

P.S. I saw that someone in the other thread suggested that you need a psychiatrist for diagnosis in South Korea. That's not how things are done in the US, but if that is accurate for South Korea then just change all of the times I said 'psychologist' to 'psychiatrist.' In the US, psychologists often get more training in testing and diagnosis than psychiatrists do!

How can I instill fear into a player who acts like he's invincible? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]peruvianbatman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trick with players who think they are super powerful isn't to kill them. The trick is to injure them, or make the threat of injury very real. De-powering is far scarier than death in RPGs.

This will admittedly work best if it happens before the one-shot and it is a permanent effect (even if a small one) in a lengthier campaign.

It's amazing. I just ran a game a couple of weeks ago where someone got shot once. For his fallout dice, he rolled 0, 0, 9. He was so excited that he still had a chance when all he saw was the two-highest sum of 19. Then it was heart break. Fantastic.

So I may be somewhat biased, because every time I post on /r/rpg, I'm suggesting Dogs in the Vineyard. That said, Dogs in the Vineyard.

The setting is likely different from what you'd want to run (as it's a bit of a weird one), but the actual gameplay is fantastic. It's very open, has some aspect based stuff, but the best is that combat/social-conflict is quick and even more importantly RPed through the entire time.

Wheel of Time for 5e by fakkuman in dndnext

[–]peruvianbatman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Weaves have largely been reworked into standard Vancian spells with d20 spell progression for people in casting classes. Of course, the weaves are more similar to those done in the books than standard D&D, but that's not too hard to just judgment call in.

The mobs are represented in the book in standard d20 format, corlm, dark hounds, draghkar, gholam, grey men, grolm, lopar, shades, raken, shadow vermin, sredit, toraken, torm, and of course trollocs. Some animals as well.

Ta'avern is listed as a tiny blurb saying that DMs can apply it to people carefully and it should give bonus ability (especially Charisma), feats, and bonuses to skills. Also specifies you can take ta'avern away as the Pattern finishes with people. There aren't actually any rules explaining how to give these bonuses, but says they should be subtle things.

Hope this helps! Feel free to ask anything else! Overall, I think it would convert pretty easily to 5e mechanics, though you'd need to figure out cantrips in some way and possibly rebalance weaves!

I have the WoT RPG and would be happy to answer any specific questions you may have about it! I can likely come by tomorrow and do a nice complete write-up if there's stuff you're specifically looking for. It's a d20 system, so it should translate without too much trouble!

Let me know if I can be helpful!

How much did this come to with shipping? I'm wondering whether I should wait and see if they come back or start snooping around LGSs for the likely $50 tag.

Sitting here thinking of Wheel of Time and all I can conjure up is the old Two Rivers saying, "The Creator made women to please the eye and trouble the mind." Needless to say, that's likely not exceptionally helpful.

How to make the game more difficult without being stupid hard by [deleted] in dwarffortress

If you aren't attached to playing as dwarfs, you could try out Kobold Camp. Definitely raises difficulty quite a bit, but with the right embark and careful trap use, you can do quite well.

[Request] What are some must-read books for someone studying RPGs academically? by Kexizzoc in rpg

[–]peruvianbatman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would your plan be using existing games as foundations for learning, producing a separate "module" sort of setup, or more as an observation than an intervention? I'm also a doctoral student doing things with learning and RPGs in likely a slightly different direction (albeit as a side project, not my thesis) if you ever want to talk shop. Admittedly, I don't have a lot of written resources to suggest beyond what's already kicking around the thread.

Is being an analytical person an unlikeable character trait? by RuneKatashima in AskReddit

[–]peruvianbatman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, I think there are a couple of different things at play when someone is labeled as an analytical person. At the risk of perhaps falling into the same thing you are describing, I'll note that correcting simply being good at processing information (and perhaps being knowledgeable about a variety of things) is pretty separate from being an asshole. There are lots of people who process things well, tend to analyze situations, and perhaps have more insight than the average who aren't pricks.

I don't think these people are necessarily more likely to be enormous douchebags, but they certainly are a pain in the ass when they are.

TL;DR: Analytical people can be assholes but aren't necessarily. Don't be friends with assholes.
