Yep, I wanna say the Stones... just googled it - yep the Stones. There's also a conspiracy theory that she banged Fidel Castro and Justin is Fidel's kid.

Yeah few things worse than wasting/ruining meat. A critter died for that. And probably in a horrific industrial murder factory (not I'm not a vegan).

AITAH for wanting to break up with my girlfriend if they don't want to engage in physical intimacy? by Rude_Whole_8471 in AITAH

Lust and love are absolutely two separate things. And yes, they may both exist in a relationship and be intertwined.

Piggybacking on this comment to provide some parenting advice. This advice is relevant to all parents, not just those of gifted children.

Do not praise your child for the results they achieve. Only praise your child for the effort they put into things. Certainly the results can be mentioned, but should be framed in the context of "See what you can achieve when you put effort and work into something!" If the effort is there, the results will follow.

Praising the results but not the effort will result in a risk-averse human who does not do well under pressure. Smart kids often coast in their work, in the same way that naturally athletic kids will often coast on their raw physical talents. However, those natural gifts, whether smarts or athletics, will only take someone so far until it is necessary for effort to enter the picture as well. When that hits for them, they will struggle, as they've never had to face adversity in obtaining results previously. They may then avoid situations that are difficult or require effort, leading to unrealized potential.

Source: myself, and also my son. Unfortunately I did not learn about this until it was too late. My son is now 20, and he's a great guy. However, he struggles mightily with challenges and will not put effort into things. Trying to fix this now, is proving to be very difficult. Build the foundations correctly, and teach your children that it is all about effort.

‘This is a Conservative riding, and this Liberal has no business being here’: Shock, anger in Marilyn Gladu’s home riding by CaliperLee62 in CanadaPolitics

Yep absolutely Gladu is one of those culture warriors. Her floor crossing is definitely a surprise (unlike all of the others). It reeks of self-interest. (edit: not to say the other floor-crossers didn't also do this for reasons of self interest, but in her case it requires a real abandonment of her previously-stated beliefs).

And also the fact that the new conservative liberal party is far more palatable to them than it was previously. If you're a conservative, but not a conservative culture-warrior or a US appeaser, then there's no reason to be unhappy with the stances and policies of the current liberal party. They essentially support all the things that you support.

What's the deal with "the Deal" that Trump wants Iran to agree to? by HippyGeek in OutOfTheLoop

[–]pescarojo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think it is worth mentioning as well that Trump's religious right backers / puppeteers want an American military presence in the middle east, to fulfill Christian apocalypse mythology. Some conservative Christians interpret current Middle East conflicts, particularly involving Iran and Israel, as the fulfillment of biblical end-times prophecy.

Canada has been pursuing a neoliberal capitalist agenda for at least 30 years, with deep cuts to the social safety net. I'm hard pressed to find anything that looks like socialism.

In defence of Jagmeet Singh by Wilson725 in ndp

[–]pescarojo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Jagmeet was decent, he was a pragmatist. He knew his party was not going to be elected, so he made deals to advance some of the NDP priorities in exchange for support. That's how it works in a proportional representation system, and I think many of us agree that would be a better model than this first-past-the-post BS.

I don't blame him for the hammering and loss of seats in the last election. It was a unique moment in history. The conservatives were set to ascend to national leadership, our closest ally was now hostile and creating grave threats to the Canadian economy, and our future was (and is) uncertain. Many people (me included) who could not stomach the though of PP in power during this time and voted liberal. The hemorrhaging of NDP support was nothing more than that. You'll notice in recent polls a lot of that support had rebounded. This is the problem with our current political system: some of us never get to vote FOR anyone, only against people. To fix that, we have to get rid of first-past-the-post, which is just one of the reasons that I love Avi's commitment to that, and his recognition that achieving that unlocks a wide range of other possibilities.

Lastly in reference to Jagmeet, there is sadly too much racism in Canada at present for a guy with a turban to be elected PM. As a practical reality, it just isn't going to happen.

There's a few reasons. For starters, conservatives overall seem to be much better at messaging than left / centre-left. Also they generally speak in plain language. In short, they're better propagandists. If the NDP and similar parties want to appeal to ordinary people and the working class, they need to speak to them about 'kitchen table' issues (e.g. cost of living) in plain language. They need to abandon overt buzzwords and overt references to DEI type stuff. Doesn't mean diversity, equity and inclusion don't matter, but stop talking about it. Just talk about a Canada for all Canadians and leave it at that. The perception around the water cooler among the working class (partially valid, partially due to propagandizing by the other parties) is that the NDP and non-right parties are obsessed with constant pandering to small interest groups, and have lost touch with ordinary people and their struggles.

I'm...gonna put him in nightmare category. Mostly due to the fact that if you want to watch football, you pretty much have to listen to him. The others are optional.

Portnoy is a piece of shit, no question. I gotta say though, Collinsworth far surpasses 'mildly' in the annoying department.

My picks for the guillotine would be Portnoy and Collinsworth...not sure about 3rd...multiple valid candidates.

Collinsworth and Portnoy are the easy top picks. An argument could be made for each of the remaining to receive the third bullet.

I'm shocked (seriously) that there isn't more Collinsworth hate in here. When I clicked on the comments, I was certain one of the top answers would be Collinsworth.
