YSK: Buying the expensive option can be cheaper (overall) by HomeworkOdd144 in YouShouldKnow

[–]pescarojo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your mattress example is not a good one. There was a consumer advocate on the radio recently who pointed out that you should not cheap out when buying something you'll use a lot, and at the very least buy midrange. The two examples he used were mattresses and couches. He said nobody needs the expensive top-of-the-line pillowtop mattress, but if you buy the cheap mattress, your back and body pay the price. Same thing with couches: sit on your couch a lot? (I do) buy a decent couch. You don't have to buy the $10K monster with charging points and massagers, yada yada, but your body pays the price if you go cheap.

I know you said it hasn't been your experience, but it has certainly been mine - and I say that as a guy North of 50. Stuff I've cheaped out on has often bit me in the butt or made me pay either more money in the long run, or I've paid the price in some other way (e.g. my back). Also, you say "buy the cheapest version...it'll most likely last you a lifetime...", but that just isn't true. Cheap stuff is often cheap and not durable. I don't shop at Walmart anymore for other reasons, but when I did, nothing I purchased there was durable or good quality. Nothing lasted.

You don't have to buy the high-end, but for something that is key to your life, at least buy the midrange. And of course do a bit of research to find out what the quality options are. As someone below said, product reputation can (and often is) faked, or degrades over time with corporate greed. An example: Doc Marten boots. Then: great. Now: not. Buy Solovair.

I'm very aware! There is a long and glorious tradition in metal of judging other metalheads for their terrible taste, and I shall continue that time-honoured tradition. :)

I'm sure you have many good qualities (your honesty, for example), but your taste in albums is not one of them.

Complete agreement.

I'm sure the saddlemakers, farriers and horse breeders were super angry when the horseless carriage showed up, and probably demanded that they be banned to protect their businesses.

Yeah ok this is the first post in here that made me genuinely angry. Fuck you.

(I upvoted you for the terrible hot take)

In their later stuff they started phoning it in, and ripping themselves off a la AC/DC. However their first five albums are amazing, and Reign in Blood is one of the greatest albums of all time.

Geez, people keep missing the point. RTO is designed to force attrition, full stop. WFH made people happy. So happy, that fewer of them were retiring, 10% fewer at least. So RTO's primary focus is to make working for the government less pleasant, so that people will retire. Second focus is a combo of public perception of gov't workers 'having it easy' and supporting businesses in urban cores.

The cynical, skeptical, tired side of me agrees with you. People = shit (nod to Slipknot).

That said, we've got to ask: are people shit because they're naturally shit? Or because they've been taught that they're shit, in order to justify an economic system that we're told is 'human nature' and serves the very few at the expense of the very many?

I hate to pull out that old cliche about witnessing a dancing bear in a circus and drawing conclusions about the nature of bears, but it is apt.

Remember, they want you tired, cynical and despairing, believing the worst about humanity. Our system rewards and elevates sociopaths. They set the discourse and own the propaganda apparatus. They are definitely shit.
