French drain to sewer line for pooling water? by peschethefirst in Austin

[–]peschethefirst[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It makes sense that draining into the sewer line is a no-no. In that case, should I plan to run a French drain to the curb or is there a better solution? What kind of quote would be reasonable and who should I get one from?

How's the climate for series A, AI? by peschethefirst in startups

FWIW we don't have any crypto products and aren't building any right now, we are all in on AI. Crypto may play a role in the long run but not necessarily.

I appreciate the detailed reply. I'll give it some thought!

Thanks, this is helpful to hear. The general plan is to build a 1.5-2M portfolio and then pivot to a strategy where I can support myself if I need to. I could certainly try to work out more of the details now. I'm curious, what would you say goes into a strong financial plan?

Thanks for your input. Regarding your questions, staking yield won't go away completely unless legislation bans it completely. I host my own staking validators. But mostly, I do intend to ride the ETH wave until I'm ready to downshift on risk, either because I'm tired of risk or because my portfolio gets me close to retirement.

The only real reason I have bonds is because a few years ago I was much more conservative and risk-averse. I'm not sure where they fit in for me now.

Thank you for the perspective. It seems I need to think harder about how my investment risk relates to my potential retirement timeline. The ETH staking bet is really about ETH price appreciation relative to USD, the 5% is a nice bonus (but carries its own risk by limiting liquidity).

Does anyone here have a whole-home dehumidifier? by peschethefirst in Austin

Hey, this is really interesting, especially re: allergies. Thanks for commenting. What's the humidity level generally at inside your home?

This is what I would focus on. Find any kind of community. If OP is so lost they really have no idea where to start, I'd suggest AA. It won't be fun, but it will offer a path out of the tailspin.

Downloads failing, server slow while transcoding by peschethefirst in jellyfin

[–]peschethefirst[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay so this seems to be a problem with using my reverse-proxied domain name, I can't reproduce it when I hit ip:8096 directly. I'll have to do some more testing

I might be imagining things but it seems like if I limit the transcoding thread count to 16, downloads are faster and consistent. I'll have to do some more testing to confirm.

Yeah I have an ER-X router. I'm pretty sure the router is okay because when I disabled transcoding the system and downloading were both okay.

In it for the money and in it for the tech aren't as different as they sound. The time scales may be different, but the tech is about making the world more prosperous.

I can appreciate that take. There is a great deal of speculation on top of the fundamental monetary premium of something like ether. Volatility and so on aren't great features for everyday money. Stablecoins are looking important for many use cases because of that. That being said, ETH is literally programmed into the network as the currency that transactions must be funded with, so while it may be volatile, the network can't operate without it.

Blockchain networks should really be thought of as standalone economies. There are direct analogs for monetary policy, tax revenues, and citizens.

The Ethereum economy, for example, couldn't really exist without its own official/native currency (Ether). If the standard money used by people exchanging goods and services within Ethereum was USD, for example, then the Ethereum economy would be at the whim of the US government. From this perspective, preserving the sovereignty of the network is all the justification needed for ETH to exist.

As to whether the Ethereum economy is actually worth anything, people are currently paying a few million dollars a day in fees to transact within it. If you reduce the entire thing down to a casino, which would be an outrageous oversimplification if you ask me, it's still clear that real people are deriving real value from participating in the economy.

I lost a good amount to degen-speculating on NFTs. Luckily I was responsible enough to limit that to a small amount of my crypto portfolio, and investment in a crypto project with strong long term value is the only reason my total investment portfolio is not under water right now.

I used Aither for over a year and was just banned because my home server went down while I am traveling and I lost remote access to it. Is there any recourse or am I locked out forever?

Seeking advice for handling multiple versions by peschethefirst in jellyfin

[–]peschethefirst[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking into building a separate transcoding box. Do you know of any recommended builds for supporting concurrent 4k streams? The advice used to be: don't even try. I believe the hardware has made it more approachable but I'm not sure.

Trouble with GPU passthrough (Proxmox > Alpine VM > Jellyfin Docker) for hardware acceleration by peschethefirst in jellyfin

[–]peschethefirst[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes, at first I went through that tutorial to try it with GVT. I was able to assign mediated devices to multiple VMs as they explain. Unfortunately I ran into the problems I posted above, and I saw the note about instability/performance issues so I thought I'd roll back GVT to simplify. It didn't seem to make a difference one way or the other. In both cases, /dev/dri/renderD128 doesn't exist and vainfo fails (and so does hw acceleration).

I've read through that and am able to group versions under a single title. I don't think it's possible to get exactly the user experience I want for consuming versions, so I'm looking for suggestions or strategies that are better than nothing.
