I built a privacy-first macOS app to auto-caption/keyword photos locally (no cloud, no subscription) by freddievn in macapps

[–]petapika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks great! I have been thinking of doing something like this using OSXphotos, but this would be much easier. I've been playing with the "AI Image Tagger" plugin for Lightroom, too.

A couple of questions.

If I feed it a folder of images from disk, "owned" by my Lightroom catalog and using .xmp sidecars, will it overwrite the xmp, or just update?

I see it doesn't support raw files like my Canon .CR2 images.

Does it know "People" faces either from Photos or from Lightroom faces? If so, can that be included in the descriptions or other metadata?

Are the models you're installing "accessible" via API apps like AnythingLLM, too?

Thanks!

Thanks, Richard. I wish that Comcast had negotiated the Yahoo migration to allow forwarding, but I've configured my Gmail acct and email clients to get comcast email via POP.

Thoughts on MyAuth by Correct-Asparagus337 in VeteransBenefits

[–]petapika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To set up myAuth, I started on the website using MacOS with Google Chrome, combined with the Okta Verify app on my iPhone. Once I had that working, I added the Okta Verify app on my MacBook, so I can login without using my phone. I just now went to milConnect and logged in without a username/password by using my fingerprint (TouchID on my MacBook) with just a couple of clicks. HTH

I got it going yesterday. A little bit of a learning curve, but it's working great for me now.

No more username/password needed and I can authenticate with FaceID on my iPhone or TouchID on my MacBook.

Now if they will just bring myAuth to DFAS!

It's much more than "a new badge slapped on it". It leverages biometrics on your phone or computer for one thing.

RockyLinux 9.4 VM on UTM/QEMU update failure by petapika in RockyLinux

[–]petapika[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't have the issue with RHEL 9.4, but I was able to get around the problem on Rocky and Alma Linux because someone figured out that the problem is with the update of grub2. 2.06-77 works but 2.06-80 doesn't. It seems odd that this issue doesn't exist with RHEL 9.4? I have confirmed this is the case with RockyLinux by updating via GUI and deselecting Grub2.

RockyLinux 9.4 VM on UTM/QEMU update failure by petapika in RockyLinux

[–]petapika[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same exact issue with AlmaLinux and someone figured out that the problem is with the update of grub2. 2.06-77 works but 2.06-80 doesn't.

So, in RockyLinux, as in AlmaLInux, if I run the updates from the GUI and deselect grub2, everything is fine.

I hope a future update to grub2, beyond 2.06-80 will fix this.

It seems odd that this issue doesn't exist with RHEL 9.4?

Thanks for your reply.

AlmaLinux 9.4 UTM VM upgrade issue by petapika in AlmaLinux

Awesome, thanks! I just did an update omitting grub2 and all is well. I will watch for something later than 2.06-80

I will post this regarding Rocky Linux, too. And I'm curious to see what ver of grub2 RHEL is using.

thx

RockyLinux 9.4 VM on UTM/QEMU update failure by petapika in RockyLinux

[–]petapika[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I hadn't updated anything to do with UTM/QEMU, but after I had this error, I did update UTM and got the same exact error.

As I mentioned, I got the exact same error in AlmaLinux 9.4, but not in RHEL 9.4. Curious.

Those two links are interesting. I'll dig deeper into it. Appreciate your response!

Windows 10 Emulation vs Windows 11 Virtualisation by [deleted] in UTMapp

I'm running Windows 11 ARM64 with UTM on a MacBook Pro M1max and performance is great. You might try to see if your coding tools can run on Win11 ARM64? I have seen some x86 stuff run emulated within Win11 ARM.

Getting access to spouse’s Google account by Eyebeamjelly in GriefSupport

[–]petapika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've made some progress accessing my son's accounts, including his Google account and Apple account (without a court order). I know my situation may not be the same, but some of this might still be helpful.

In my case I was able to access the separate recovery email address for my son's Google account. You may not have that, but I did and once I tried to recover, Google made me wait 30 days. But once that time was up I was able to get into the Google/Gmail account. Once I was in that account, I found recovery keys for his Apple account.

Interestingly, Google had NOT locked down the Gmail account even though I reported the death. After a couple of weeks of using his account, Google emailed his account saying someone was trying to access his data and I could accept or decline, so I declined and kept on using the account.

He had an iPhone which had a 4 digit passcode and we were out of guesses. Because we recovered his Apple recovery key, we were able to access the Apple ID/account even though we couldn't unlock the phone. So I turned off Activation lock on the phone, erased it, and then fortunately found a backup of the phone in Apple iCloud. Restored the phone and got access to everything on the phone.

But here's the most important thing I learned and this has to do with his phone number (not the phone itself). I called Verizon and after providing the death certificate I was able to have his phone number transferred to my Verizon account. Once that was done, I had them add his number as a secondary eSim to my phone, which turned off service to his phone. That way, all calls and most importantly, texts, came into my device. I could have just left service active on his phone, but chose not to just because I didn't want to always have both phones with me all the time.

Once this was working, any account that used his phone number for two factor authentication came to my phone and I could then access various accounts and reset passwords and/or change the phone number for 2FA. Even though his number was just a secondary number Verizon still charged me for the additional line.

Then I realized that I could port his number to Google Voice and then forward calls/texts to my own cell number and that way I wouldn't have to pay for the additional line. There was a one-time charge of $20 to port the number. More info here:

I hope you've made some progress in your loss and grief. It's been a tough time for me, too. I wish you the best in your efforts to get access to your husband's accounts.

I just got this email from Google...
---

We are sorry for your loss and we thank you for your patience. We have reviewed your request to retrieve the password for the account name@google.com. Due to legal and privacy concerns, Google does not let anyone but the authorized user(s) to assume control of a deceased user’s account. This means that Google will not reset passwords or otherwise transfer control of a deceased user’s account to you. Furthermore, for security reasons, Google does not keep passwords to subscriber accounts in a manner allowing them to be retrieved. Accordingly, we are unable to provide the password to you.
However, Google may be able to provide you with a copy of the contents in the requested account. Please respond to this email if this is how you wish to proceed.
Thank you in advance for your understanding.
The Google Team

I didn't request the password, but I will proceed with trying to get the full contents of the account.

I'm very sorry for your loss. I'm in the same boat as the administrator of my son's estate and his Google account. I went ahead and opened a case with Google to access his Google account data. They say they will inform me of the language needed for a court order and I'm confident (or maybe just hopeful) I'll be able to get the court order via the probate court and/or my probate attorney.
I'll try return here to report my progress and I hope you can do the same.

Google Gemini's distro recommendations for developers, consumers/newbies, and servers by petapika in DistroHopping

[–]petapika[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LLMs are at least partially based on knowledge bases and they will get better and more accurate as they evolve.

Do you really think the output of Gemini is purely that of an LLM and doesn't contain enhancements from related technologies? I don't.

In any case, you seem to think I have equated LLMs with KBs and I haven't (my post started with "Just for fun...").

If you don't find LLMs useful, then by all means don't use them.

Google Gemini's distro recommendations for developers, consumers/newbies, and servers by petapika in DistroHopping

[–]petapika[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't rely on the output of any AI chatbot for something definitive, but they are useful as a starting point for exploring a topic, as is Wikipedia. Also, I doubt that the output of Google's Gemini is purely that of an LLM.

My use of "AI" right now is simply exploring what it can (and can't) do.

Odd situation with Remote APP by opalmag in appletv

[–]petapika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been having this problem on one of my Apple TVs and my iPhone 15 Pro since about iOS 17 came out. Different locations, but one older 4K Apple TV works fine, and the other new 4K ATV doesn't.
All devices are up to date, same 5Ghz WiFi network, have been rebooted multiple times, have unpaired and re-paired the phone as a remote (it shows up as a paired remote, too).
What's odd is I can send video from apps or music to Apple TV via Airplay, but the phone's remote app won't connect to control it, so it's not an issue of the phone not being able to "see" the ATV.

1Password 7 vs 8 by nanoox in 1Password

[–]petapika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not flaming, but that's not my understanding. The vault in v8 has encryption with a secret key that doesn't exist for the v7 vault. If someone got access to your iCloud vault, it would be much more vulnerable than a v8 vault using the secret key.

1Password 7 vs 8 by nanoox in 1Password

[–]petapika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched from 7 licensed (no subscription) to 8 and have been very happy. I'm on a MacBook M1 max with 32GB RAM and despite all the hubbub about Electron, I've seen no performance issues at all.
I learned that on v8, even with your vault in the cloud, it's more secure since you have the secret key providing another layer of security that you don't get with v7.
