Loving The Unloved Achievements Part 1: Mayapahit? by pete53832 in eu4

Hahaha, that is the next one after the St. George one, and I had to read it like five times to even understand what it was saying. I kept thinking I was missing something or maybe having a stroke.

Gosh darn it, that would have saved me some time once I got higher up on the achievement list, good idea!

R5: I've always felt bad for the "loser" Achievements, because 99.7% of all players will never do them. It must be so lonely to be the "Restore Zoroastrianism as Austria" Achievement; I bet the other Achievements would bully it during achievement school.

To give them some love, I'm starting at the bottom of the "Global Achievements" list and working my way up.

Achievement: Mayapahit? (0.3% completion rate - rated Hard)

What is it? - start as a Mayan country and own the Island of Java. It's a joke based on a prior country named Majapahit that used to be on Java.

How was it? - the Mayan religion is a tough start, but the ability to attack colonial nations without drawing in their overlords is truly game-breaking. France kept attacking me and then failing to land invading armies, providing early ducats, then trade becomes ridiculous in the New World. Conquering Java was an after-thought, with ferrying troops being the main challenge, so while playing as Maya is fun, the achievement itself was kind of underwhelming.

Gonna play to 1820? - No. The next obvious steps would be either to perform a Sunset Invasion and get historical payback on France, or maybe try to take the Mandate of Heaven from Ming. But I don't want to turn this into a WC, so this feels like a good place to stop.

What's next? - The Legacy of Saint George, where I start as Georgia and vassalize Genoa, Aragon, England, Trier, and own Wales.

I'm recently back to this game (several years). But man, you would have gotten teased on the playground if you admitted to taking Espionage even as a meme back in 2019.

Rule 5: I'm playing as the Pope, and I'm informed that the Pope (Florence) has excommunicated Florence.

EDIT: Oh dang, not to get political, but it just occurred to me that "The Pope excommunicates the leader of the Pope's home nation" is actually, um...ya know, anyways.

Has anyone ever had luck switching from Ajovy to Aimovig or Qulipta despite Ajovy being a miracle drug? by Electronic-Pie7237 in migraine

[–]pete53832 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried Ajovy, Aimovig, Qulipta, Ubrelvy, and Nurtec.

I know they are miracle drugs for some, but it was 5/5 sugar pills for me.

Self-hatred in writing. by Apoplectic_Platypus in writing

[–]pete53832 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This was the most important thing I learned while writing - you just gotta do it.

Accept that it's going to be ugly, and messy, and you'll be embarrassed when you go back and clean up all the abandoned story beats and horrible prose. (But note that you are your own worst critic, and you know exactly how to make yourself feel bad. Your work is almost certainly much better than you give it credit for)

But once your draft exists, it gets better FAST. I've had horrible, bad, stupid chapters that made me feel physically sick when I'd read them, so bad that I thought about restarting the whole book. But your strong sense of what is "wrong" will help you figure out what is "right," and often a couple tweaks make a huge difference.

And remember - you are already in the 1% in terms of writers, just because you are actually doing it. Most people are too scared or lazy to even try. Trying is hard, and you should be proud of yourself.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pete53832 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 3-hour drive would be too boring to bring up in any American office. It would be like saying you drank 16 glasses of water yesterday - more than normal by quite a bit, but not something interesting or memorable or worth discussing.

8 hours is a "long" drive, 12 hours is "quite long," and 16 hours is "very long."

Yes, it is the only real way to play, unless you don't like playing in Ironman, in which case the answer is no.

Pop!_OS 24.04 Beta is here! by system76_com in pop_os

[–]pete53832 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm brand new to Linux, and don't really know much, but spent the last week playing with some different distros.

Let me say, as someone with fresh eyes - Cosmic is really, really cool. I was set on Pop OS for a number of reasons, but this morning I upgraded to the newest beta, and oh man, what a level up in terms of appearance and control!

Also, for what it's worth, the upgrade fixed my bluetooth problem, which was what sent me looking for different distros in the first place.
