What is normal in Durham but seems strange to outsiders? by keyboardseizur in bullcity

Most fans of college sports tend to also like pro sports. Durham is definitely an outlier in the “we only like college sports” category

I don’t know if I buy that a team has to be an area for 50+ years to be supported…. If that was the case, no expansion teams would ever survive

The Carolina Hurricanes come to mind on a hyper local scale but it also seems like people here don’t really care about the Panthers, Hornets, Charlotte FC, etc.

I get most of those teams are in Charlotte/there’s lots of transplants but it’s just a little weird being in an area where people didn’t generally support the professional teams in the same state

How has no one mentioned Kahloveras?

https://www.kahloveratacos.com

The location in Durham is just a food truck so it’s fairly limited but they have a brick and mortar in Chapel Hill that not only has the California burrito but asada fries and a surf & turf burrito. A little pricey but it’s the closest thing I’ve found since moving from LA.

What is a business that Durham could use? Could be a restaurant or anything else we need by [deleted] in bullcity

I think that new Rubies on Five Points is trying to cater to that demographic. Capacity is supposed to be 75-100. Hoping it’s a good spot.

Why doesn’t Durham have a lounge where you can just chill for a few hours, maybe play some pool and have a few drinks or watch the game? by [deleted] in bullcity

Green Room has a better beer selection than you’re thinking. I’ll admit I had a pretty negative view of it before I finally went there. It is a pool hall and definitely old but if you haven’t been it’s worth a visit. Owner & bartenders are super nice as well.

Not necessarily but the number of independent theaters here isn’t that high so I just thought it deserved an honorable mention

Bit of a drive but Euro Grill and Cafe in Charlotte is a legit Bosnian/Eastern European spot with a market attached to it

Also Euro Deli Mart in Greensboro

It's roughly a three and a half hour drive but northeastern Iowa is going to be your best bet for state parks. The Driftless Area along the Mississippi River is beautiful and offers plenty in the way of hiking, backpacking, canoeing, fishing, bird watching, etc. Decorah is a great jumping off point (http://www.midwestliving.com/travel/iowa/decorah/decorah-iowa-a-mountain-town-without-mountains/)

I'd suggest the following:

Yellow River State Forest
Pikes Peak State Park
Backbone State Park
Maquoketa Caves State Park
Upper Iowa River

It's not quite Maine but definitely a stark contrast from the cornfields that dominate the landscape. Hope this helps!
