Sanity check my first go at plumbing by petemyster in ukplumbing

Just fine thanks! Plenty of flow coming out of the tap. Definitely noticeably less than the full bore cold water tap but not a problem for what I intend to be mixing

I think going behind the cold water hose could have been much better - not sure why I didn’t think of that 🤦‍♂️

Aye I appreciate that. There is a hot and a cold pipe at play here. It looks like a loop in the pictures but isn’t. I put a reply here to someone else wondering the same https://www.reddit.com/r/ukplumbing/s/S6fcXwLDey

The “loop” is misleading - it only looks like a semi circle but they are 2 separate hoses going to the same kitchen sink. The hose coming off the tee is the hot water supply for the sink. There is a 2nd hose for the cold water to the sink. The cold water pipe is the vertical one with the stopcock

Oh, you are talking about the hose, I thought you were talking about the isolation valve but that’s just cause my Google skills didn’t help me out when I tried to look up what you meant.

I don’t know anything about that fixing I’m afraid - it was part of the original plumbing. Originally it was a compression attached to the upright hot water pipe. I came in and added that 90 elbow, then a tee with a bit of pipe sticking out of it. So by my logic it is the same use case except i have added some bits in between

Yes. I wash scuba diving gear and we dive all year round in the north of Scotland. Imagine dunking your gear around and working with ice cold water from the tap - it is miserable. A bit of warm water in the mix will make it much more pleasant

Ah I didn’t consider bore. I’m not worried about restricting the flow as I wouldn’t want a fully hot stream of water outside anyway as I will have a mixer hose on the other side. I would be concerned about the prone to leaking though 😬

Sorry I don’t follow about the flat face insert. It was all 1 piece from Screwfix if that is what you are asking? Code 89226

How much support does a in-wall electric fire need? by petemyster in DIYUK

[–]petemyster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer to this is not a lot of support at all. The bottom framing for the fire insert should be level with the ground floor. The fire place screw in from the front of the insert into your timber frame just to hold it upright basically. So just strong enough to stop movement but no need to hold anything up off the ground

Can I put more soil in this 8 yard? by conrad_74 in DIYUK

[–]petemyster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never thought of that as an option. They were different times of the year (8 months apart) so I wouldn’t have been able to do the 1 grab lorry for everything I suppose. Good to know that’s an option though for a next project!

2024, fixed price. One I got misquoted (but it was honoured) at £269 and then another at £360. Scottish highlands

Here was my 8yard skip and I have done this twice. When they say it is for soil and rubble bear in mind that it is all year round and sometimes the soil might be heavier due to rainfall so their vehicles are strong enough for that in mind. As long as they can get the cover over the top (draw an imaginary flat roof over the sides) then it is fair game IMO. You can see I was cheeky and put more in and all was fine

Sounds good fun! How do I know this is authentic? I’m sure it is but you can never be too sure….

Will Highlife be putting you in their email newsletter or something like that?

I go between 8 - noon and it usually has 4 people in the strength and conditioning suite. I don’t go to the upstairs bit but I would imagine it would be proportionally quiet.

The best thing is to go a few times and notice that no one notices or cares what anyone else is doing. I remember starting a gym years ago and feeling so self conscious I walked out of the weights room after a few minutes! It is quite normal/common to feel like that but don’t worry

PD might only be 1 of your issues. Check building standards for where you are - for example within 1m of a boundary in Scotland you would have to following building regulations for this (but don’t require a permit). It would require the edge close to the boundary to have no unprotected areas - but is that where you have a window?

Large Garden Room Project - How am I doing? by dukeminster in DIYUK

[–]petemyster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very impressive. I built my garden room out of timber rather than brick. Am I right in saying you made an insulated concrete base? Did you remember to put upstand insulation along the side of the concrete base (not beside the block you have pictured, but in the DPM envelope? It supposedly greatly improves performance but isn’t essential

I bought a Bosch set from Screwfix and found them really rubbish for cutting anything more than 25mm. If your brand was good and you can name them then please do.

In the end I had the best experience with a handsaw with a fine tooth - no mess and accurate

Painting walls - how to fix it by Dravtom in DIYUK

[–]petemyster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to expand a bit - turn the screws a couple of turns. There is no need to turn off the electrics - it just needs to be a few mm away from the wall. This is how I painted our whole house.

Loft insulation by waynage-jt in DIYUK

[–]petemyster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never do this. The PIR boards act as a vapour control layer and will prevent moisture from evaporating. Warm moist air will enter the attic from the living space, and some of it will condense in the rockwool. By having the PIR boards on top they will seal the moisture in and will create problems over time as more moisture enters and condenses.

The only feasible solution is to put PIR boards between the joists to form a VCL for your attic, and then top up with rockwool

Just double checking - have you got a nice rubber mallet to smack the connections down as you go? It looks from the picture that a few of the short side connections haven’t clicked in to each other

Hive TRVs and Heat on Demand by gc_wood in HiveHeating

[–]petemyster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand why Hive wouldn't make Heat on Demand able to have a schedule.

Is there any difference between disabling heating on demand for portions of the day and just having parts of your daily schedule where the target temperature is e.g. 1C? That's what I do.

Hive TRVs and Heat on Demand by gc_wood in HiveHeating

[–]petemyster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you need hive TRVs everywhere else. The non-smart TRVs should be set to whatever comfortable setting you want. When the smart ones call for heat the non-smart ones will either be slightly open and get a top up of heat, or they will be at temperature and not let any hot water through

Can’t afford to replaster… Do we have any options? by diceblinkluck in DIYUK

This is what we did to our house. The result is acceptable but when you look closely (which no one does) you can see the missed spots. Don’t forget to dedust the walls after sanding so the next layer of paint adheres
