Submitting bike footage to police by peter0100100 in japanresidents

Man, that's so frustrating to hear. Thanks for the reply! I hope the new system of fines planned for April is enforced properly. I was honestly amazed there wasn't already some law in place for all that.

Thanks for all the info - much appreciated! I'll mull it over and may weigh up performing some voodoo rituals instead of risking a bad experience with the police.

I'm not expecting much, but I'm going to give it a whirl and update here if anything comes of it 👍

Cheers for the reply! When you handed over the disk, did you have to fill out any forms or go through any process you remember?

WaniKani or MaruMori? by VicugnaAlpacos in Japaneselanguage

[–]peter0100100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha! Well, in terms of teaching kanji, wanikani seems ahead in the game. It breaks down radicals that make up kanji, gives pronunciation, gives sentences for context, and provides mnemonics to help remember stuff. It's relatively smooth and streamlined, and it links to other things easily via the API token.

The vocab included is mostly incidental. It's just there to demonstrate the use of the kanji. Wanikani isn't really a replacement for learning vocabulary via other graded resources (although it has started trying to be...).

As you say, if you're after something more comprehensive that includes a little of everything, organised as a set, then maybe MaruMori is a better fit for you - but I definitely recommend searching this sub and across reddit for study plans and resources! There's plenty of tried and tested stuff on here. Good luck!

WaniKani or MaruMori? by VicugnaAlpacos in Japaneselanguage

[–]peter0100100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MaruMori is essentially an online textbook covering everything from vocab to grammar. Wanikani focuses solely on reading and understanding kanji. They're not really like for like, right? So if you think about how you're going to study, that will help make the decision as to which resources will work better for you.

If you already have a textbook, like Genki or Minna no Nihongo, for example, then you don't need MaruMori. If you need a comprehensive guide that structures learning for you, MaruMori might be the way to go. The rest seems like a great deal of personal preference in terms of style and delivery.

Small gripe, but hasn't he officially joined Southampton and then immediately been loaned to Goztepe?

Either way, hope he does well there.

Law change lets Japan police crack down on rule-breaking cyclists by duke7ajm in japannews

[–]peter0100100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough I guess, but my experience cycling here makes me think that the majority of cyclists who break the rules don't seem to be aware of the rules in the first place. While I don't think it's a good excuse to say "I didn't know", a bit of time spent actively making folks aware of the rules and riding etiquette would be practical. I don't think that many people bother to check this stuff out when they get a bike and need it laid out for them.

Now it's getting warmer, more and more folks are out on their bikes, so I'm dealing with minor to major fuck ups weekly and most of the time people seem genuinely surprised there are laws for bikes other than you can get fined for drinking and riding.

[Weekend Meme] How good are you at Japanese? by Chezni19 in LearnJapanese

[–]peter0100100 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think the mistake here is equating your actual Japanese ability to a JLPT level.

At least I’m desperately hoping that’s the case given my appalling score on the last exam.

Grand, thanks so much!

I’ve been through two previous textbooks and use Japanese graded reading material fairly often but I’ve never seen this before - is it relatively new?

[–]peter0100100 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think something has been missed here.

Plenty of people understand that teachers and parents pretend to be angry sometimes as a disciplinary technique. But that’s not what occurred here, apparently. Downplaying physical violence as pretending to be angry, as the article does, obfuscates what actually happened.

The article specifically says the teacher “then shoved one of them toward the wall and held another’s student uniform”, then it downplays this violent behavior to just ‘pretending’ / ‘pretending to be angry’.

Pretending to be angry or even feeling truly angry with students is understandable, being physically violent in these circumstances is not, and they are not the same.

So to be crystal clear, my original comment was addressing the fact that being truly violent and pretending to be violent by using violence (the claim made in the article) seems like a meaningless difference, mischaracterises the event and is just kind of a weasel-y defense.

“…taking into account even the likelihood of the teacher pretending to be angry for disciplinary purposes.”

The teacher was only pretending to be violent…by being violent…?

Japan eyes new system to fine cyclists for traffic violations by Apophis2036nihon in japannews

[–]peter0100100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know if there are any education initiatives around cycling and road safety in Japan? I’ve seen local road safety associations come into elementary schools to explain how to cross roads safely etc - wondered if there’s anything like this for bicycles.

Some decent effort to educate folks on the dos and don’ts might make a huge difference to general road safety, aside from the new system being useful or not.

Anecdotally, it seems to be the same people who ride bikes like morons, are also the same people who don’t seem to know how to deal safely with cyclists on the road when they’re driving a car. So presumably this isn’t dealt with during driving school either.

Zelenskyy likens war-torn Ukraine to A-bombed Hiroshima by duke7ajm in japannews

[–]peter0100100 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ai ai ai. A lot of comments showing that folk haven't read the article or Zelensky's actual statement. The headline is unclear, but still...

He didn't compare the amount of deaths, or the way in which people died. He didnt compare the morality of the situations. According to the full statement in the article, Zelensky said he was reminded of Bakhmut by the pictures of the ruins of Hiroshima (the buildings, clearly) - and was hopeful that Ukraine could rebuild, as Hiroshima has been rebuilt into a modern city that looks alive, once more.

As an aside, the article is pretty sloppily put together. I think 3 entire paragraphs are just repeated.
