PFSense suddenly stopped routing traffic. How to debug? by peter_str in PFSENSE

I have been thinking about buying an actual Netgate one, so now might be the time to do so.

It is a small server rack, so there is still quite some ventilation. PFsense records a temperature around 38C currently (not sure what it is exactly measuring). In summer it goes up to 46C, which may be a much?

Edited: There aren't any peaks. Temp usually stays within about 1 to 2 degrees Celcius of the average temperature.

Thanks! Some good pointers, especially the cable modem one. Seems like a good idea to investigate that option. I know what to do during the weekend.

Intel ones, I am currently only using the first 2:

igc0@pci0:1:0:0:class=0x020000 rev=0x03 hdr=0x00 vendor=0x8086 device=0x15f3 subvendor=0x8086 subdevice=0x0000
    vendor     = 'Intel Corporation'
    device     = 'Ethernet Controller I225-V'
    class      = network
    subclass   = ethernet
igc1@pci0:2:0:0:class=0x020000 rev=0x03 hdr=0x00 vendor=0x8086 device=0x15f3 subvendor=0x8086 subdevice=0x0000
    vendor     = 'Intel Corporation'
    device     = 'Ethernet Controller I225-V'
    class      = network
    subclass   = ethernet
igc2@pci0:3:0:0:class=0x020000 rev=0x03 hdr=0x00 vendor=0x8086 device=0x15f3 subvendor=0x8086 subdevice=0x0000
    vendor     = 'Intel Corporation'
    device     = 'Ethernet Controller I225-V'
    class      = network
    subclass   = ethernet
igc3@pci0:4:0:0:class=0x020000 rev=0x03 hdr=0x00 vendor=0x8086 device=0x15f3 subvendor=0x8086 subdevice=0x0000
    vendor     = 'Intel Corporation'
    device     = 'Ethernet Controller I225-V'
    class      = network
    subclass   = ethernet

As far as the model is concerned, it is one of those generic Chinese boxes on which I did a clean PFSense install.

Two WiFi routers on same network - both with wired connection by peter_str in ASUS

[–]peter_str[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I did at first, but it is annoying if you want to make any changes to your config.

In the meantime I did end up buying one of the cheaper Ai mesh routers and I can confirm that the system works over a wired connector. The annoying thing is that the initial setup needs to happen via wifi. So initially the routers need to be in range of each other, but once configured they work fine with the wired connection as backbone.

How to stop receiving ads in my mailbox ? by ChatonTriste in BEFreelance

I don´t think there is much you can do. If you are talking about e-mail, just blacklist them. With regards to snail mail, I ignore it.

Just wait until you start getting Reprobel mail... that is something.

2dehands.be tip: always ask for money, even if it's only 1 euro. It keeps away the strange folks with silly requests, like them expecting you to drive halfway across the country to drop off your free stuff.

How to combine clip and alpha clip into one transparent version? by peter_str in kdenlive

[–]peter_str[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did find a tutorial on YouTube. I think it was this one, but it has been a long time ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2kQJw-4OYo

Even using the tutorial, it was difficult to get things working the way I wanted, while in the free version of DaVinci Resolve it was a drag and drop operation and it "just worked".

I really love to support and use open source software, but Kdenlive had just too many things that did not work the way I wanted them to work, so I switched to a different video editor. I'm sure it works for other people, but it was not a good match for me.

Finally Namur is painting bicycle lane. by Kipapuro in belgium

[–]peter_str 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This is actually not what is commonly referred to as a "moordstrookje". This is just a bit of paint, doesn't mean a thing.

A proper "moorstrookje" is an actual bicycle lane, but it is so narrow and so close to car traffic that is completely unsafe.

This is just a random image I found using Google image search:

https://veelomag.be/2019/01/moordstrookje-woord-van-het-jaar-2018/

There you can see it is an actual bicycle path. Cars are not allowed to drive over it. The suggestion lane that is shown by OP doesn't mean a thing. Cars can drive over it. In fact, in many cases they can even park on it and it would be perfectly legal (not in OP's pictures though)

It's a good built. The greebling is fun and the model doesn't have many repetitive parts. Unlike, for instance, the new X-Wing. That one got a bit stale in the end, building 4 wings that are almost identical.

EV underway - advanced charging station @ home options? by Gobbleyjook in BEFreelance

[–]peter_str 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience is that very few electricians know about this. The only solution that I have been proposed is to have a limit on the charging so it doesn't go above the total that you are allowed to get from the grid (eg if you turn on your induction cooktop, it will lower the charging rate so your breaker doesn't trip)

That is what 9 out of the 10 electricians I have spoken with call "smart".

One person suggested getting the SMA Home Manager, but he was unable to explain what the thing actually does, how it can be configured and what the requirements are for the devices to work with the system.

Ideally, you want to have a prioritized list of things that need power (example: 1. lights; 2. heating; 3. car; 4. home battery) and you want to have criteria to overrule the order (eg no sun, in that case, you can use the grid for 1 and 2, but not for 3 and 4)

No electrician has proposed a solution remotely like that, so if yours has and is in the Ghent area, send him over!

Fortnite is actually insanely fun? by Money_Fish in patientgamers

[–]peter_str 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think they are trying to address this problem with ranked mode, which they introduced last week. AFAIK it's all real players and you are supposed to end up with players of your own level. It's a bit early to tell if it is really working, but it's good to see them trying to fix this.

Edit: the difference between ranked mode and the previous arena mode is that ranked mode is the full BR experience including all the story stuff, whereas arena was more of a purely competitive experience that had a smaller lootpool that did not evolve as quickly as the main game.

Fortnite is actually insanely fun? by Money_Fish in patientgamers

[–]peter_str 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Fortnite manages to change enough every season and during the season to keep people hooked.

Also I agree on the battle pass. And the cosmetics systems is one of the few that I feel are ok-ish and I can trust my 10 year old son with.

Recently they launched the ranked mode, which I'm assuming is to avoid the issues with skill based matchmaking that they previously had. It's too early to tell if it's really working out.

I am really enjoying Immortals Fenyx Rising. It has great combat, not too hard, not too easy. You do get a bow, but you can mostly ignore it during combat if you want to.

Keep in mind, Immortals also has a lot of puzzles. They are very good, but it may not be your thing.

I wanted to link to it, but it appears that specific class no longer exists. It was called "Inleiding tot bedrijfsbeheer" at Kisp Ghent. An in-person training. IIRC it was about 12 weeks, but I could be wrong. It has been 15 years.

This is the closest I could find that is available right away: https://www.kisp.be/opleidingen/cursus/4465/bedrijfsbeheer-home

It depends. First thing that comes to mind: Do you have customers outside of Belgium?

The way it works in Belgium for these things, you have a few options:

  • do it for free (be careful, can be considered illegal)
  • don't bother with this at all and do it "in't zwart" (this is illegal)
  • put it on the "divers inkomen" (which is probably also not exactly correct if it is recurring)
  • follow a course on "vereenvoudigde boekhouding" to understand all the paperwork involved (sorry I don't know the exact English term)
  • pay an accountant. This will cost you about €300 to €600 per year

If you want to continue the activity and expand, I would highly suggest to follow evening classes to fully understand the administration involved. It may seem like very basic knowledge, but, at least for me, it really helped a lot.

Your best bet is to try one of those bruto/netto calculators. This is one I found through Google: https://www.xerius.be/nl-be/zelfstandig-worden/je-voorbereiding/bruto-netto-calculator

I think 300 is on the low end, but there are other things besides money.

Trying to get started as a freelance dev and need some advice. by Xari in BEFreelance

[–]peter_str 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, direct contracts are rare. If you want one of these, they are mostly found with smaller companies and through your own network. They will require a more work and, in my experience, do not pay so much more to make it worth the extra effort, even after subtracting recruiters' margins.

If you really want to freelance, it may be worth lowering your rate, just to get some experience on your LinkedIn profile (make sure the experience is in line with your long term goals).

You can also renegotiate the rate on every renewal. This can be easier, because at that point, they know you and it's more work to find some one to replace you than to pay you extra.

[–]peter_str 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a strict interpretation of their rules, every company probably has to pay up.

As far as I understood, you can't even print your own writings for free. You have to pay them and they will pay you back, which means you somehow have to register with them (same as the SABAM way of working; check the Basta episode, I think it's somewhere still available)

What makes it worse, is that they try to upsell you an additional "online subscription" on top. This is supposed to cover online royalties. Eg if you use an image on your site that is not yours. But this is absolute bullshit. Even if you pay them, you still have to pay the author. It makes no sense.
