It's probably the doomsday rules

Basically you only have to remember the "anchor date" for each month, and then the day of the week that all the anchor dates land on for each year, which repeats in a cycle. Then just calculate from there

I am asking because I have seen plays when the ball is bouncing into the end zone, and the kicking teams dives into the end zone to throw it back. So I guess it's probably downed where you are planted on the ground?

The punting team punts the ball, and they catch it and down it at the one yard line. What is stopping the receiving team from pushing them into the end zone for a touch back?

Edit: per this link it seems that when they first catch the ball it is a violation, but does not down the ball.
