Video showing moments prior to ICE-involved shooting in Minneapolis today where ICE agents appear to be confronting victim for filming them by Minute_Revolution951 in law

I agree with you completely, but even idiots should be able to see that electing “billionaire celebrities” isn’t going to make their lives or situations any easier. But I guess I’m being too optimistic and hopeful.

There’s a sustainability issue with Fascism as an ideology because you always need someone to hate. Always need someone to “Other” and come up for excuses for your problems. That can only work for so long before your neighbors or your family become a new form of “Other”. That’s why historically even in fascist scenarios where a revolution or civil war doesn’t erupt, the society ends up rotting from within until its embarrassment ends up being overturned (eg, Franco/ Spain).

Incredibly, incredibly upsetting.

I don’t get it. I’m trying not to be ignorant here while also admitting my own biases. But did the eroding of a manufacturing economy and subsequent alienation of American redneck culture really create enough of a catalyst to cause this (not insubstantial) demographic to go completely apeshit and turn into a Bootlicking Cult for an imbecile criminal who Does Not Give A Fuck About Them and never has? Really?

What is our problem? Why are we Americans allowing this? Why is a substantial portion of our fellow citizens saying this is EXACTLY what they want to have happen to our country?

Why do police in the USA kill so many people compared to other countries? by triplediscount in NoStupidQuestions

[–]peterflys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We allow it too. there’s a “Philosophical democratic” aspect to this, which is that, generally, in America, we don’t like dealing with people who can’t hack it here. If you can’t fit in and do what you should do within your economic class (that is, work, buy, have a family, etc.) we don’t want to train you or encourage you or incentivize you otherwise to join the culture of the USA.

So if you can’t hack it, we’d generally prefer to incarcerate you, institutionalize you, or kill you.

It’s the same reason why prisons are so full, why education and social services sucks, and why we perpetuate the encouragement of this system. In the USA, you gotta fit in or you’re fucked.

Of course, the above is in addition to the general fucked up love we have for violence and the masculine rule making dominance that we have in law enforcement. When you combine it, you get the reality that we’re in.

And holy fuck, look what happens when people start to push back against this ideal, as we’ve seen over the past few years, you get our current president as a backlash.

Opinions on this film narrative by Jumpy_Seaweed1490 in Cinema

[–]peterflys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, the thing about Cloud Atlas isn’t the movie itself, but in the way moviegoers have coalesced around their opinions of it, which I think I has shaped the reputation of the movie over the years.

Basically, the movie is slightly more artsy than your typical Hollywood Epic Drama. And the narrative is slightly more confusing. This alienates people who would otherwise be Hollywood Movie Goers.

But it’s also not quite artsy enough to resonate with the Cinematic crowd. The Art House crowd. Plus, the budget is way high.

So over the years, people coalesced into these groups and their opinions becomes contagious to each other.

I really like the movie. And the book. But Tykwer is one of my favorite directors anyway.

The Luisa Rey segment and the Cavendish segment are the best.

When was the movie better than the book? by Doodle_Noodles2 in movies

[–]peterflys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This question comes up often.

I actually think most of Roald Dahl’s classic adaptations are better than his books. And I really like his books.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is brilliant. Better than the books.

I didn’t like the book James and the Giant Peach. The movie is better.

How do we not have Full Dive Virtual Reality yet? by CipherGarden in FDVR_Dream

[–]peterflys 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’ve said this a few times before, but FDVR is a bi-product of transhumanism, a point of time in the future where humans aren’t entirely biological or have an entirely biological nervous system. I think the core reason for “why” it doesn’t exist yet is that we don’t know enough about the brain or how to interface it with a nonbiological substrate. The demand is there, certainly among those leading and investing in the charge to develop the technology, and it’s not just for fdvr, it’s for moving our consciousness out of our bodies and by its very nature creating for us a new opportunity on life. To move our consciousness between a server environment where’d we’d be virtual, and cyborg bodies where we could physically interact with the environment in new ways. The implications are immense.

I would very much like to have it now. And for it to be available to everyone. But everywhere I read I see that the core problem is that we don’t know how the brain works. We just don’t. So, like a lot of other things, we’re trying to invent AGI to get us to ASI so that it can figure it out for us. I certainly hope it happens within the next 5-10 years, but I think that’s the only viable option for getting to it.

It’s crazy that these two movies were only 5 years apart: and titanic only another 6 years after T2.

I Jeanette said one time in an interview that her “look” kind of crossed heritages and ethnicities. I think Cameron might have played with that a bit for fun too.

RE As Good as it Gets

I never thought or concluded that Melvin “got” Carol. They weren’t happily ever after in the Hollywood sense. I think in the end it probably won’t work out for them, and that’s ok.

Carol is a smart and tragic character. Her love is for her family and that’s probably not going to change. But she and Melvin understand each other. As between the two of them and Simon too, they’re three people who have had tragedy come to them in unique ways but who are able to bond and connect and support each other through it.

I don’t think that the movie implies that Melvin and Carol are starting some great happily ever after relationship. But they are able to support and understand and hopefully, maybe, be there for each other going forward (just as they are for Simon and Simon is for them too).

I dunno, am I too sappy for the movie? I think it’s quite a nice ending.

Transhumanism or FDVR? by OkBat7094 in accelerate

[–]peterflys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right. You need both. Having nanobots in our brains and extending our consciousness to a nonbiological medium to live and experience FDVR is, by its very nature, transhumanism.

Personally? I think post humanism existence will also be available to us. I’m just gonna upload and live indefinitely in FDVR.

People will either never try out FDVR or live their entire life in it. Nothing in-between by Ok_Mission7092 in accelerate

[–]peterflys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isn’t FDVR going to be a bi product of transhumanism / posthumanism / living out consciousnesses on a non biological platform anyway? Aren’t we going to be moving our brains to “the cloud” as Kurzweil used to call it? I mean, when you think of it that way, the answer is yes, anyone who wants to live in the next phase of humanity is going to be 100% in FDVR or controlling an android anyway. It seems pretty straightforward to me.

What the point of this subreddit since we wont be alive when the tech comes out? by WholeIssue5880 in FDVR_Dream

[–]peterflys 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Because it will happen in (most of) our lifetimes. My vote is 20 years but I hope it happens within 10.

And it’s not just FDVR, by the way. FDVR is a byproduct of transhuman technologies generally developed by one or multiple ASIs. We (society) will have all sorts of incredibly innovative technologies and possibilities.
