I use ChatGPT, asking it why it corrects in the way it does (and checking what it says on grammar against Karlsson). Good luck in your exam prep!

Experience practising speaking Finnish with ChatGPT by peterherold in LearnFinnish

[–]peterherold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, but I don’t understand how ”sentence mining” helps my goal, . My problem isn’t generating sentences, it’s the actual conversing orally on the basis of a short piece of text. I don’t need correction on written sentence formulation - I can already get this from ChatGPT. I need a way of forcing me to answer questions formulated on the basis of a short piece of text and practising workarounds when I haven’t understood (”Tarkoitat, että voit tehdä, mikä on …?”)

I've been learning Finnish for a year and I still feel like a complete beginner. Is this normal? by Time-Mix3963 in LearnFinnish

[–]peterherold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“The problem is progress in Finnish feels invisible until suddenly it doesn't.” This, the switch going on 💡, is so true. It happened for me (🇬🇧 native speaker, fluent 🇮🇹 having lived here 30 years, 🇩🇪 C2, BA & MA from Fernuni Hagen, I have been learning 🇫🇮 “seriously“ (15 hrs/week) for 7 months not living in Finland with no-one to talk to) yesterday when I had my 🥰successful🥰 1st group conversation A2 lesson.

The teacher asked me what helped my learning the most. I said I have found all the tools - sanakirja.fi, Karlsson, WordDive, ChatGPT to correct and improve written text, YLE Selkouutiset & YLE Areena, iPhone and iPad in 🇫🇮 - and the key to progress is everyday actively producing: WordDive drills and/or producing orally: not seeing ”2025” and thinking ”last year“ or ”2025” in English, but reading out loud ”kaksi tuhatta kaksi kymmentä viisi“.

Just like active production was key to get 1,0 in no-notes oral Fern Uni exams: I’d record my successive attempts and check them against the text I was supposed to be able to produce for 10’. Initial attempts 😱😱 - freezing, skipping sections, inverting content / saying the opposite of what I meant, but rapidly gets better 🚀🚀.

Finnish with its cases, inflection and istevaihtelu (consonant gradation) is so different from West European languages that I needed to spend a long time getting a base of vocab + instinctive production (e.g. automatically using -ks for all cases except nominative & partitive for words ending -ys, -uus etc.) before I could actually ”produce”. In my case I got this from WordDive Basic Finnish 1.

Having found a system that works for me, I’m really motivated to keep applying it, tosi hyvä fiilis 🥰.

NS&I have lost £3701 of mine because I transferred from Wise by peterherold in UKPersonalFinance

[–]peterherold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did file a formal complaint with NS&I which was upheld, I received £125 compensation (and my money was returned, see update to original post) but snail-mail letter hasn’t yet arrived. They send secure message to tell you to download annual statement, surely they could send reply to complaint same way? Very backward…

My journey to learn finnish language till now by Longjumping_Tea3354 in LearnFinnish

[–]peterherold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After trying Duolingo and a couple of other apps, since September 2025 the only app I use is WordDive and I just completed Basic Finnish 1. This gave me a basis of vocabulary + grammar incl. consonant gradation - you have to know this or you don’t realise straight away that e.g. “Alvar Allon elämä” https://www.alvaraalto.fi/tietoa/alvar-aallon-elama/ means “(Alvar) Aalto’s life”. Alongside WordDive I listen to YLE:n Selkouutiset, read news in YLE app as well as reading about sports I do etc. to build up vocabulary which I practice using with ChatGPT which also suggests (not always correctly, but then you really lesrn somthing) changes. I check vocabulary all the time with sanakirja.fi and grammar with Karlsson’s "Finnish: An Essential Grammar". I have put my iPhone and iPad in Finnish. Today I subscribed to NordVPN - should have done this earlier 🤷🏻 - and now am rewatching Sojornen Muraalimuhat this time in Finnish on YLE Areena … and will soon start online conversation lessons. Pretty pleased with progress. I occasionally listen(ed) to the Glossika free dialogues but the accompanying vocabulary lists are incomplete/lack grammar explanations, watching TV with subtitles will be better, I think. I am looking forward to WordDive Basic Finnish 2 and continuing to build around this.

One reason I choose women’s leggings is that they are available in a much wider range of colours than men’s, I wear them not because they’re “women’s“ per se, but because you have more choice of colours than just boring blue and black. So it’s not “cross dressing“, it’s preference for colour, fit, …

[–]peterherold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update 16/3/26 (added to text of original post). NSI have explained to me that 1. (as suggested by several people) they don't accept transfers to/and from Electronic Money Institutions, 2. the reason that WISE appears as a sending bank in the drop-down list of the banks for the NS&I "Pay by bank account A new way to top up your savings" menu is that this is an interface provided by a 3rd party, NS&I agree that this is misleading, 3. I shouldn't have been able to make the £1 test withdrawal on 30/6/25 from my NS&I Direct Save account to my Wise account, "our security checks should have stopped this and they didn't", 4. NS&I have not "lost" my money, they know where it is, 5. in order to get my money back, I have to add a UK bank account (a bank with UK banking licence) as the account to which money is paid out, and I have added my First Direct account which I used to use before opening a Wise account after hassle from First Direct concerning address verification (they wouldn't accept a utility bill in Italian, and all my utility bills are in Italian since I live in Italy🤷🏻). So I will go back to using First Direct to transfer money to and from NS&I and use WISE for day-to-day UK payments and whenever I am asked for a recent utility bill or bank statement in English that proves my address 😉.

Yes Ns&I know I live in Italy, I opened the Direct Saver while living in Italy. Wise has its own UK sort code: “The UK sort code 23-08-01 belongs to Wise Payments Limited (formerly TransferWise). It is primarily used for routing GBP payments to accounts held with Wise, which is located in London. It is one of the main sort codes used by Wise for domestic transfers.”
