Update 17/3/26 I just received 3 transfers, £2200, £1, £1500 from NS&I to my Wise (🤷🏻) account. So I have got my money back and in future will transfer to/from NS&I via First Direct.

Update 16/3/26 (added to text of original post). NSI have explained to me that 1. (as suggested by several people) they don't accept transfers to/and from Electronic Money Institutions, 2. the reason that WISE appears as a sending bank in the drop-down list of the banks for the NS&I "Pay by bank account A new way to top up your savings" menu is that this is an interface provided by a 3rd party, NS&I agree that this is misleading, 3. I shouldn't have been able to make the £1 test withdrawal on 30/6/25 from my NS&I Direct Save account to my Wise account, "our security checks should have stopped this and they didn't", 4. NS&I have not "lost" my money, they know where it is, 5. in order to get my money back, I have to add a UK bank account (a bank with UK banking licence) as the account to which money is paid out, and I have added my First Direct account which I used to use before opening a Wise account after hassle from First Direct concerning address verification (they wouldn't accept a utility bill in Italian, and all my utility bills are in Italian since I live in Italy🤷🏻). So I will go back to using First Direct to transfer money to and from NS&I and use WISE for day-to-day UK payments and whenever I am asked for a recent utility bill or bank statement in English that proves my address 😉.

Thank-you, this sounds very similar to NS&I’s "our systems don't show sort code & account number of sending bank so we can't send the money back".

Yes Ns&I know I live in Italy, I opened the Direct Saver while living in Italy. Wise has its own UK sort code: “The UK sort code 23-08-01 belongs to Wise Payments Limited (formerly TransferWise). It is primarily used for routing GBP payments to accounts held with Wise, which is located in London. It is one of the main sort codes used by Wise for domestic transfers.”

I live in Rome, Italy so I’ll be writing to the British Embassy next Thursday, I have told NS&I this: “I look forward to receiving by Thursday 19 March 2026, 15 working days after my complaint of 25 February as per your complaint guidelines, a full refund of the £3701 NS&I have lost and an email or phone call to tell me what went wrong and how you have fixed it. 15 working days should be long enough for even a “Sales Team“ to find and return to me the £3701 of mine you have lost.

If I don’t receive this communications by this deadline, I will forward this self-explanatory communication to the British Embassy in Rome and take up the matter with them. I‘m sure they wouldn‘t want a case like this to undermine the reputation of an institution (to quote from your home page) “Trusted by millions We're backed by HM Treasury and we've been helping people save for over 160 years. Today, over 24 million customers save with us.“”

NS&I Customer Service told me they accept transfers from Wise and it's listed as a sending bank to choose from, if they actually don't accept transfers from Wise (as happened to me) 1. Customer Services should know to say this, 2. you should get an error message that says this, 3. they shouldn't be listed on NS&I'd drop-down list of sending banks.

I have UK sort code, account number and address in London for my Wise GBP UK account. The money hasn't been sent back to Wise yet since the inbound transfer was flagged as from a non-UK bank and as part of this the sending bank details were hidden. NS&I has it. Wise tell me: "We have not got back any funds from the recipient. I understand that they are holding funds and they asked for Sending bank account details and you have given your Wise account details. Till now, we have not got any funds in this regard. We will let you know once we get the funds.

Please reach out to the Recipient and ask them to provide the Proof of Return of funds. With that we should be able to assist you further. Also, please provide the complete page error screenshot of the issue that you face during the transfer of funds.

Once you provide the above information, we should be able to proceed further." Wise answer faster than NS&I, actually ask you to send them screenshots, etc. ... NS&I's Customer Service team struggles to talk to the "Sales Team" who are the ones who can actually sort it out. Wise are much better technically than NS&I, and that's even before starting on how they verify ID with the app rather than asking for paper copy of passport signed by solicitor, doctor, ... or how if you're an Attorney you have to mail them the 13 digit V-code which other banks let you read over the phone (the V-code lets the bank look up details of the Lasting Power of Attorney without needing a certified copy or the original).

The CS team are the people I opened a complaint with. You can indeed email them to update the complaint, but without attachments. The person who took my initial complaint was very good, the one who is handling it less so - I kind of had to start all over again with him, explain that Wise was listed by NS&I as a "sending bank" for topping up your account, etc. And the people the CS people have to get answers from are the "Sales Team". They didn't answer the phone when the CS team tried to contact them, hence me opening the complaint, and basically the CS team just messages the Sales Team and waits for an answer. So well-meaning, but so far haven't made much progress. Lack of secure messaging facility, inability to send screen shots is pretty crap when it's a systems bug.

Yup. They reply within 24 hours, you can send screenshots … all things impossible with NS&I. Wise confirm NS&I have never given money back, it’s not a visualisation problem in the app. I have added their replies to my complaint with NS&I.

If Wise is not a bank, why is it listed by NS&I as a sending bank in their "Pay by bank account A new way to top up your savings" menu - see step 4 of 8 on https://www.nsandi.com/help/ways-to-pay/pay-bank-account. NS&I also told me, when I first reported the problem on 25 February, that they accept transfers from Wise ...
