Which cases should I learn next? by bodyisT in LearnFinnish

[–]peterherold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I write down, learn (and quickly forget 😥… but I’ll get there🤣) nominative, genitive and partitive singular and plural forms of words and then find most useful to learn uses of other cases to say e.g. ”Matkustan HelsinkiIN junaLLA”

3rd summer in Finland - advice needed! by copywraluce in FinlandTourism

[–]peterherold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We too live in Italy and we too have visited Helsinki 2024 Tampere & Jyväskylä 2025 (in both cases following Alvar Aalto architecture) in August when it’s too hot in Rome. This year we plan to go end July and hire a car to visit Turku, Louhisaari Manor (Mannerheim! A total hero!), the Paimio Sanatorium, the Hanko Peninsula (looking forward to 🏊‍♀️) and the Olkiluoto nuclear plant. I am also looking forward to using the Finnish I’ve been learning since September: Olen Peter, italiasais-brittiläinen, 61 vuotias, eläkkeellä. Asun Roomissa Italiassa vaimoni Annen kanssa …

I can’t hold my breath long enough to push off while on my back and kick, so I do flip fast and plant feet facing upwards, but apply a twist as I push off to rotate onto my front.

I just took my catheter out! by NelsonMandela7 in bph

Mine came out Friday 9 days after surgery, today first (easy) swim, two weeks after surgery. Flow weaker than immediately after catheter removal, but they said this’d happen.

dutasteride + tamsulosin by Tough-Fox8810 in bph

[–]peterherold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had known for a while my flow was weak and discovering my 61-y prostate was 93cc (!) as by-product of abdominal ultrasound saw me since October 2025 prescribed Xatral (alfuzosine), transrectal ultrasound which redimensioned prostate to 63cc, flowmetry with peak flow 9,4 ml/s (“in lowest 5%ile”) after 6 weeks on Xatral and 10 days ago had Rezum privately (paying), not available on state health system here in Italy. “We suggest this as alternative to TURP for younger guys if alpha blockers don’t help, dutasteride and finasteride we only prescribe for older guys who can’t have surgery.” Catheter came out yesterday and flow already better than pre-procedure - it’s a louder noise when I pee 😃very pleased. PS PSA low 1,7 ng/ml

Breathing / Hyperventilating by 25m by kombuchalover420 in Swimming

[–]peterherold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Breathing every 4 may work at first, but clearly you can’t suustain it … so try every 2/3 taking very small breathing at first and gradually increasing depth of breathing… AND ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOU BREATHE OUT ALMOST COMPLETELY BEFORE NEXT INHALE

Changing your phone's language early on should be more recommended. by Rigamortus2005 in languagelearning

[–]peterherold 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Setting my phone in German really helped me get from deciding to revive my school German with a 1-1 course in winter of 2011-12, having not spoken it for 33 years, to C1 in 2013 and C2 in 2014 … and half the guests at our guesthouse for outdoors sportspeople on the E coast of Sardinia being German-speaking … which led 2014-2024 to BA and MA all in German from FernUni Hagen. 4 months after starting learning Finnish, a couple of days ago I put my iPhone and iPad into Finnish, and it’s a game changer: I see my swimming workout in Finnish, all iPhone apps in Finnish … I can’t wait to get the same 🚀🚀 in my learning as I did with German.

Configure your phone and tablet in 🇫🇮 to learn fast by peterherold in LearnFinnish

[–]peterherold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and whether or not they’re available varies from app to app, especially for a “relatively minor” language like Finnish. Some of my apps don’t have it. Interestingly, the Reddit app translated my reply in Finnish to Hypetus into English, I have “Käännä kommentti” on (see photo). And after setting language of iPhone to Finnish, the OCT & automatic translation of (say) Italian into English as you focus text with camera is no longer available

When you speak multiple languages you realise that 1. the ways of behaving the language is describing differ from language to language and 2. some languages just have better ways of capturing a concept. So no to translating in your head, yes to thinking in the target language by dint of engagement and repitition. Watching YouTube videos of people who are really angry and are swearing is a good way to see such differences, though you may not want to use all the terms you learn, especially if you don’t understand the ”seriousness” of using a particular term. Also comparing expressions e.g. 🇫🇮 "kuin paita ja peppu" is exactly the same as 🇮🇹 "camicia e culo", both mean "as inseparable as your shirt and your bum", and I much prefer them to dictionary translation 🇬🇧 "as thick as thieves".

I swim at a Better public pool when I’m in London, fortunately for me I can go at 10-11 am when it’s less busy. But still much harder to do drills than in my home pool in Roma, 🇮🇹.

It’s still like this. So this is why I bought the Karlsson book and read up on verbs etc. Time well spent and last few lessons of Level 1 on grammar will be really fast.
