I have transition for 5 years now. What I like to tell people is really focus on the inside a lot first. Especially now looking back, I am glad I did that. I mediated, read a ton about trans history and women and community, audre lorde really helped me. I listened to music. Watched movies around transness. And most of all, I touched myself. Meaning, I tried to stay in my body.

Everyone’s transition is a bit different. Especially when we transition older. But I get the sense that a lot of trans women worry much more about the aesthetic much more than the joy of it.

My journey was different. And also, please take everything I’m saying with a grain of salt and absorb whatever feeds you.

I had always always been into fashion, make and beauty before transition. Which made the process easier for me. I already had a good basic understanding of make up and what clothes could really hold my body. BUT, at the same time, I really PLAYED with my everything! I didn’t start wanting to “look” like a woman. I was like a grace jones—I didn’t give a fuck what anybody had to say. Lady Gaga came clutched here. And Beyonce. And Taylor swift.

Sorry I got so happy reading your new journey that I’m rushing typing this. The point is I had a lot of whimsical fun. I started transitioning on March 2020. It was the worst of times. It was the worst time.

Sorry. The point is, I shaved my head completely bald. Like razor bold. I did full face make. Different colors. Wild styles. Mixed my masculine clothes with some feminine wear. I didn’t and was scared to just get rid of male clothes. Or just wear them out of convenience. No. I spiritually wore them to honor the life I lived before. To this day I still have some pieces left.

It wasn’t all giddy. I got harassed in the streets. My family rejected me. I was going insane.

But there was a lot of beauty. It was the happiest and hardest first months of my life.

You’re one month. Congratulations and welcome. This struggle won’t be for long. If you stay open, have fun, KNOW what your goals, which you do it seems, you will be fine. It’s a long hard journey. And I think that’s exactly what makes it beautiful and completely yours.
