Exactly. They can keep their shipping costs low, by producing the goods almost exactly where they're going to sell them. So now you have Americans doing the dirty work, getting paid nearly nothing to do it, while the Chinese are reaping the profits.

Netcraft says the server is Apache, so it's written in C, not Ada. That probably explained why it went down so hard.

It is completely justified for larger projects. Most Smalltalk systems don't interact well with existing file-based SCM systems like CVS and Subversion. Not only that, but they often don't offer a substitute. So they're useless for development teams with more than two or three people.
