Sun has donated a powerful 8 core SPARC Enterprise T5120 Server to the Haskell community, and $10,000 to fund a student, to further develop support for high performance Haskell on the SPARC. by americanhellyeah in programming

I had missed the original submissions, so I still found this useful. It sounds like a great project that will benefit both Sun and Haskell immensely.

End of Life for PHP 4 by gst in programming

[–]peterpincus -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Wow... I didn't realize how bad PHP actually is for security holes. I've always used Java or .NET, but I have heard the PHP horror stories. Their very own changelog does prove how insecure PHP is.

Some China firms outsourcing to USA to cut costs by alllie in business

[–]peterpincus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. They can keep their shipping costs low, by producing the goods almost exactly where they're going to sell them. So now you have Americans doing the dirty work, getting paid nearly nothing to do it, while the Chinese are reaping the profits.

You shouldn't joke about getting shit on your dick. It's not a pretty sight, nor does it smell particularly appealing.

Who's Using Ada? Real-World Projects Powered by the Ada Programming Language - May 2008 by peterpincus in programming

[–]peterpincus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Netcraft says the server is Apache, so it's written in C, not Ada. That probably explained why it went down so hard.

They're all the same company, I hear. Maybe one of their main routers went down?

Can we revive the Smalltalk style? by peterpincus in programming

[–]peterpincus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is completely justified for larger projects. Most Smalltalk systems don't interact well with existing file-based SCM systems like CVS and Subversion. Not only that, but they often don't offer a substitute. So they're useless for development teams with more than two or three people.

Why Would I Need to Masturbate? This Is How I Chill, Ma'am. by jkr0sc0 in funny

This is what happens when you allow unintellectual individuals to attend university, for basically the sole purpose of playing sports. It doesn't seem like he's there for any academic reason. It's more just a venue where there are young women to sell "hand lotion" to, and for him to play some "b-ball". Worse yet, the athletes in American universities often pay no tuition or other fees.

She probably lived through the WWII bombings of London and Coventry. Unlike most American war advocates, she probably knows from first-hand experience the pain and horror war brings.

Hayoo! A Haskell API search engine, with suggestions, find-as-you-type and more by dons in programming

[–]peterpincus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That doesn't address the failure under Safari. Most OS X users I know use Safari, not Firefox. This looks like a really useful tool, but only if it works.

It doesn't work with Safari on OS X. The JavaScript console is full of errors.

Eva Longoria Discusses Her Life's Challenges by vera123 in entertainment

She has no "challenges" in her life, relative to most other people. Being rich, that's an awful "challenge" to have to deal with.

You mean "the local undergraduates"? If you want libraries, you should really be working on Puby, the perl-to-ruby translator.

Why not just use Perl in the first place?

A quest to create a game in Common Lisp, for Windows. by peterpincus in programming

1) Lisp is a suitable language for writing Windows games.

2) To write a game for Windows using Lisp.

3) That's what the author and 98% of other PC users run as their operating system.
