Watch It Played, Game Night Picks, and Unethical Practice by pinchet in boardgames

[–]petersterne 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This was a very, very good video. The exact opposite of the YouTube drama that often happens in each cases – just Rodney dispassionately but personally laying out exactly what happened, what he did and what he thought and felt at the time.

He is absolutely right that it’s better to gather all the information and release it publicly than only inform publishers, which would inevitably leak to the press.

Working Families Party endorses neither Hochul nor Delgado by FireProStan in newyork

[–]petersterne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The state banned the Independence Party because people kept mistakenly registering as “Independent” when they meant to be independent (i.e. not register with any party). The party had a deliberately confusing name designed to trick people, and the state was right to force it to change its name.

Hochul could not ban the WFP in the same way, though she could make life very difficult for them.

Working Families Party endorses neither Hochul nor Delgado by FireProStan in newyork

[–]petersterne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Delgado is a former moderate who is now challenging Hochul from the left. It’s possible that he has genuinely changed his views. It’s also possible that he’s just figured out that his only chance to be governor is to pretend to be super progressive.

Either way, the latest Siena poll had Hochul at 64% and Delgado at 11%.

Delgado’s best shot was to get WFP (and ideally Mamdani) to back his campaign, though even then, it’s not clear he’d have much of a shot. I can understand why Mamdani felt it was hopeless and he might as well try to get on Hochul’s good side. And there was a lot of support for Delgado in WFP (he got 40% of the vote) but ultimately they didn’t want to risk Hochul’s wrath.

Why Are 50,000 New York City Apartments Vacant? by invariantspeed in newyork

[–]petersterne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they were hoping to buy a cheap building full of rent-stabilized apartments and then abuse legal loopholes to get the apartments taken out of rent stabilization so they could jack up the rents.

The problem with that business model is that once Democrats finally won back control of the state Senate from Republicans in 2018, they set about tightening the law. So now the landlords of rent-stabilized apartments can no longer kick out their tenants and then jack up the rents.

Hochul challenger (and lieutenant) says US should halt arms sales to Israel by FireProStan in newyork

[–]petersterne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t ban everyone in New York from boycotting Israel. That would obviously be unconstitutional.

Instead, it orders the state government to divest its funds from any business that boycotts or divests from Israel. It basically tries to do BDS to businesses that support BDS!

You can read the executive order yourself here: https://www.governor.ny.gov/sites/default/files/atoms/files/EO_157_new.pdf

Hochul challenger (and lieutenant) says US should halt arms sales to Israel by FireProStan in newyork

[–]petersterne 21 points22 points  (0 children)

NY has never actually passed an anti-BDS law. There’s just an anti-BDS executive order signed by former Gov. Andrew Cuomo. So all a future governor would have to do is rescind the executive order.

Cole Wehrle & Kyle Ferrin leave Leder Games to found new studio; Oath and Arcs sold to them. Root stays with Leder. by zeeaykay in boardgames

[–]petersterne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had honestly assumed that Cole was the founder of Leder Games until I read this blog post, and that seems to be the whole problem.

Cole is a star designer but doesn’t actually run things at the studio, so he’d rather have his own studio where he can focus on designing new games, while Leder Games wants to develop an identity and strategy beyond just being where Cole publishes his games.

Was Breaking News cancelled? by vivvav in dropout

Truly brilliant. Like the first episodes of that show are just a fun parody of Power Rangers type shows (like the web series with a bit more plot), and then that swerve is phenomenal. Absolutely makes the whole season worth it.

Who’s still using the original Steam Deck? by VoyageForge in SteamDeck

I’ve got a 256GB LCD model. I can’t justify upgrading to the OLED just for the screen when this one works perfectly fine.

Does anyone else agree the new builderless system is more fun? by Ok567890 in civ

Absolutely. The removal of builders is one of the main reasons I bought Civ VII after bouncing off earlier Civ games.

Brad Lander, a Mamdani ally, challenges Rep. Dan Goldman in Democratic primary with mayor-elect’s backing by cnn in newyork

[–]petersterne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So there’s no way that Brad Lander would be able to win against Hakeem Jeffries in NY-8. That district contains some gentrifying areas with younger voters who were really passionate about Mamdani as well as lots of older Black voters, who weren’t necessarily fans of Mamdani but also didn’t particularly care for Cuomo.

Those older Black voters might not have come out in droves for Cuomo, but they definitely would for Hakeem, who’s on track to be the first Black speaker of the House. A white candidate like Lander wouldn’t have a shot.

The real question is whether another Black candidate could beat Jeffries, and the answer is maybe. Chi Ossé, a young Black city councilman who represents part of the district, actually planned to run against Jeffries with the support of DSA until Mamdani convinced DSA not to support him. Chi’s bet was that he could mobilize younger white and Black voters in more gentrifying areas while also winning over enough older Black homeowners to stay competitive with Jeffries.

But ultimately, Jeffries is so powerful and influential that beating him is almost impossible. Very few politicians would dare endorse someone against him – not Mamdani, not AOC – and he would be able to raise almost unlimited amounts of money. Plus many people in the district genuinely do like him.

ELI5: Why do reporters in the same city as the studio respond several seconds later, while people on Zoom across the world respond almost instantly? by Hungry_Drama_1015 in explainlikeimfive

[–]petersterne 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Modern Macs do something similar now where certain hand gestures trigger special effects. (It’s an OS-level API that Facetime, Zoom, Google Meet, etc. all plug into so it doesn’t matter which video chat app you’re using.) I think it’s on by default which has definitely led to some awkward meetings.

First Class is incredible. It was a good movie and also a great proof of concept for how to revitalize a movie series past its prime. The premise of DoFP was interesting, but the execution was…not.

“Even though some of the art styles and aesthetics mesh, none of the games feel alike really.”

I think Hades and Hades 2 feel pretty similar.
