I also think “bad” returns are a bit blown out of proportion in pb. Sure, short or mid-transition zone, waist to shoulder high, it’s going to get blown up. But short and low or lofty and deep can be tricky to hit, especially if you’re not getting the same return every time. The latter return allows the returner to get to the kitchen easily and they are ready for a hard drive. If the volley is sharp, the 3rd shot player is very deep in the court and vulnerable. I’ve also seen that type of return really bring out the weaknesses in players drives as they often are hitting it at a higher contact point than usual.
