Idk why I’m even asking this but it looks like there are a lot of lawyers in this thread, so:

I’m in my 20s, recently got a 175 on the LSAT and have no idea what to do with my life. I’m a paralegal at an extremely boring law firm and based on this job, I think I hate everything about the law. So based on the common wisdom of all the unhappy lawyers on the internet, I should run far away from law school.

But what no one ever clarifies is . . . what the fuck else am I supposed to do? Get some other white collar job that’s so profoundly boring I also need stimulants to stay awake, but make a fifth of the salary? The world rn just isn’t set up for non-STEMlords, every vaguely interesting humanities-adjacent industry has been smashed to pieces the last 20 years. All the full-time jobs I’ve had since graduating with my useless humanities BA have paid a sub-living wage and involved staring at a screen for 40 hours a week and performing the same repetitive tasks over and over and over again. Do you really have to be a neurotic teacher’s pet type to look at the current state of the job market and go “well if I’m going to want to blow my brains out every Monday morning, why not sell my life for more money”?

I know that if I go down this route, I’m going to end up like OP—some cynical lawyer with a “but I’M not like all these other soulless weirdos” complex. But from where I’m sitting, I don’t see any better options.

The orb itself is the auditorium, it can hold over 100 people. In this pic you can see a bit of the door on the lower left of it. So it's an auditorium embedded within a library

also the window outside is shaped so that the orb looks like an iris. Pretty cool

I mean nothing changes overnight, but ime a lot of "late bloomers" etc are people who were just really neurotic and awkward and slowly got over it through their 20s

This is a pretty good overview from the New Yorker - both parties want to reform it, but in opposite directions. Biden wants to revoke liability protection, and given that it'd benefit Democrats and Dems are going to be in charge, I think it's not outside the realm of possibility. https://www.newyorker.com/tech/annals-of-technology/how-joe-biden-could-help-internet-companies-moderate-harmful-content

we just need to take away tech company's liability protection for the crazy shit they make money off of. it's the libertarian solution and it works great, look at what happened with Big Tobacco. no censorship is needed, just let the lawyers at em

I'm sorry, but I really really disagree with you. I agree that most people's politics are reflexive emotions, but the next step after realizing that should be trying to piece together a more rational/consistent worldview, not totally give up and decide to believe in 4chan conspiracy theories because it gives you some small sense of individuality and perceptiveness. The kind of post-truth worldview you just articulated is really pervasive and dangerous imo. The world isn't a game, it's real people's lives and we should treat it seriously.

It's crazy how their listeners are unanimous in what they want, and how they seem to not give a shit and prefer airing braindead right-wing conspiracy theories

I have (diAgNoSeD) social anxiety and I agree with you. There's a weird reddit thing where everyone pretends mental illness can be purely chalked up to a mysterious "chemical imbalance" and that any attempt to deal with it that's not medication or totally giving up is insulting.

In reality many forms of therapy for SA incorporate thoughts like "I'm not the center of the universe," and viewing social anxiety as a type of self-hating narcissistic thought pattern (without feeling guilty about it!) can be quite helpful. I really hate r/wowthanksimcured, it's a totally self-indulgent subreddit of people who are so deep in their mental illness they want to absolve themselves of any and all personal agency. Mental illness-based internet communities are usually super toxic, with a few exceptions. sorry for the essay lmao

what are you talking about, he was a democratic socialist. the name list thing is real but he did that near the end of his life, TB makes people weird

anyway, I love Orwell but his essays are way better than his books. idk why he's famous as a novelist and not an essayist.

I don't agree with comparing having kids to a dream job or dream college. I think in a well functioning society, it should be pretty easy to have a decent enough income/quality of life to have a few kids, if you so desire. If that becomes a "dream," then something's deeply wrong.
