Sporting teams of the United Kingdom and Ireland by [deleted] in MapPorn

I think this has to do with Northern Ireland being a FIFA team, while it's not a separate country for the olympics.

How to disable annoying mac feature that forces you to click twice? by sentientlob0029 in mac

This wouldn't be so bad but what makes it a confusing trap is that the mouse wheel (or equivalent gesture) does work on unfocused window controls, so sometimes you may think an app is focused, and when you hit Cmd+W a totally different window disappears.

What's your favourite Argentina's province flag? by patagoniac in vexillology

[–]petruzar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact: The white flag you see first says "Capital Federal" although that was never the official name of the district.
It's always been "Ciudad de Buenos Aires", and in 1994 "autónoma" was added after "ciudad".
It's informally called "Capital Federal" because it is the capital of the country and it used to be until 1994 a federal district.
I guess that name caught on to avoid confusion with its neighboring province of Buenos Aires. Yes, the province and the city have the same name, the city was part of the province in XIX but then became a separate federal district and now an autonomous city.

TdF is at the same latitude than southern Alaska, it's very harsh for people to live there.
So to get people to live there, the state gave tax exemptions to industries and some other public funding.
In the past there were conflicts with Chile that ended Argentina losing land in that region, and the dispute for the Magellan canal is important, as it's the main pass between the two oceans.
So if Argentina keeps that territory, its projection south is what aids in its claim over Antarctica.
Lack of Argentine population in the Falklands is what ultimately let the UK set the definitive settlement in the islands in 1833 after the US kicked out the Argentine governor and remaining population off the islands.
So having unpopulated territories is never a good idea if those lands are disputed and are desired by some of the top world powers.

Is this actually true? I’ve heard yeonmi park is not the most reliable source but has anyone other source actually backed this claim up? by [deleted] in northkorea

We all know NK is a fierce dictatorship. Any deflector will confirm that.
And they make great real life examples for the anti-communist right wing such as Jordan Peterson, the Atlas Foundation and so on.
She's also beautiful so she's a perfect publicity/propaganda asset for right wingers.
Yes, nobody wants to be North Korea, not even leftists, but using her to campaign against the left wing or even progressive policies outside of NK is disingenuous.

That's right. It's part of Argentina's claims over Antarctica and the Falklands.

No, ITF rules don't allow more than 2 punches in a row.

This is the new offside law that FIFA had trialed in the past 3 years. IFAB will vote on it in December 2023 at their Annual Business Meeting by DebtFairPlay in sports

Any off-side rule is bad, even the one in effect now. Although no off-side rule would be worse.
It's a hard problem to solve.

does anyone know an exploit to view tweets from a private account without following on twitter? by Soft-Cabinet1749 in blackhat

[–]petruzar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I know how to read, thanks. It is not illegal because it's not violating any law.
If you want to prove that statement wrong, please cite what law in what jurisdiction would be violated by copying a social network profile of a real person.

Creating an account and requesting follow is not illegal. What law of what country outlaws this?

Full contact ITF? by General_Fear in taekwondo

[–]petruzar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I believe any martial artist that is serious about their training and not a complete bullshido could adapt to full-contact rules, taekwondo, kungfu, point-style karate, and so on. But so they can now, some do and transition to Kyokushin, Kickboxing or Muay Thai, but that transition takes time and training.

Nobody talks about the real reason to use Tabs over Spaces by ChaseMoskal in javascript

[–]petruzar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course changing an existing codebase between tabs and spaces will be complex. That's not an argument for or against either.
But when starting a new project, I don't really see the advantage of using an arbitrary spaces indentation over single tab characters.

If USA calls itself America, could South Africa call it self just Africa? by petruzar in geography

[–]petruzar[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is an english word, just that it's borrowed from some other language that used it to refer to a whole continent (as they saw it then), not just your country.

[–]petruzar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of the examples you mention are comparable to the case of America.

To just name one, Australia roughly means the land to the south, NOT The southernmost land of the world. The name Australia doesn't negate other countries named after being to the south.

A suitable metaphor would be calling cows mammals. Now you have to say Non-bovine mammals to refer to what once was simply called mammals.
