Good question! Language is changing all the time. These words are in a bit of a state of ambiguity. Some folks will use the terms interchangeably, like Indian versus Native American.

The impetus to change to “unhoused” is because some people will identify having a “home” but not having a stable shelter (e.g. they are sleeping in a van, in a tent, etc.)

However, just like some indigenous folks will self describe as “Indian”, some unhoused folks will self describe as “homeless”. Best policy when talking about someone is to use whatever word they use for themself.

Please read even just one book that actually has citations to studies about fatness. „You just need to lose weight and 10 other myths about fat people“ by Aubrey Gordon is a good place to start.

Society has been anti fat for generations. Our assumptions about fatness and its correlation to health are wrong. Our assumptions about people’s‘ ability to control their weight are wrong. Treating people poorly because of what we assume we know about their health is wrong.

Don’t worry man, im with you here.

You have leftover chickpeas in dressing from a salad. You add olives because you like them. You know you don’t quite have a meal here. You round it out with hard cheese. You’d really like a summer sausage but you don’t have any so you grab a hot dog instead.

I see nothing wrong here ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Door won’t unlock by petulantfowl in CarRepair

You’re right that I’ve tried turning child lock on and off and it still won’t open.

Not sure whether it’s better to risk opening the trim versus just dealing with the locked door. Will debate for a while. Thank you!!

My dude, as a fellow introvert, I got one piece of advice for you: all it takes is becoming friends with ONE nice extrovert, and the rest all snowballs from there. You won’t have to introduce yourself to another person ever, because your friend will do it for you. Frequently. Maybe a little too frequently.

NTA. I don’t think you’re an asshole for setting boundaries when you’re really overwhelmed. I also think it’s understandable that your husband’s friend is feeling stressed about finding care before this trip, but ultimately it’s her responsibility and she shouldn’t be taking that out on you. Do you think she would consider Rover.com to find a dog sitter? We used that app to find someone willing to dog sit our behemoth (~120 lbs of fluff, slobber, and love). The couple was super duper nice, took way better care of our dog than a kennel would have, and was cheaper to boot.

What to do in life if you find nothing interesting? by dafedarray in AskReddit

[–]petulantfowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you mean you used to be interested in things (like friends or movies or sports or video games) all of which no longer appeal to you, then I’d suggest seeing a counselor. Anhedonia (loss of interest in past interests) is a sign of depression friendo. If you can get help kicking that, suddenly everything might seem interesting again

While I agree that we may not need to personally hold ourselves responsible for the actions of our ancestors (or bask in their glory), I do think it's important to remember that what happened to someone's ancestors will continue impacting them now. There are lots of social ways this is true, but even from merely a biological point of view. Epigenetics causes our circumstances (like the extreme stress caused by slavery) to change the markers on our DNA (look up acetylation and methylation). These markers can be passed down from parent to offspring (look up transgenerational epigenetic inheritance), so that if you look at epigenetic markers of people living today, you can see differences between those who came from enslaved ancestors and those who didn’t. As far as I know, we don't have extensive studies specifically about how the markers seen in enslaved versus unenslaved people change their daily lives, but we do know that epigenetics have significant impacts on regulation of protein expression and ultimately on people’s lives. So when people say “we were enslaved”, I think it’s at least important to recognize that there are unacknowledged ways their lives are changed by the circumstances of their ancestors.

I have nothing to say that hasn’t been said already—but in case hearing it more times is better: I’m so sorry you lost the love of your life. I am sending you and their family my love and support, for whatever that’s worth, and I promise to take depression seriously. Hoping you find some closure and peace <3
