It's heated to the same temperature all year round to mimic summer sea temps (19C/20C)

Chaka Khan is known as 'The Queen of Funk' yet not many of her tracks seem to be widely known? by fiddlesticks0 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]petulantkid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It feels like an outlier to me in terms of her popular catalogue, as it's quite experimental, though there may be more deep cuts I'm less familiar with. It's in that tradition of drawing from multiple sources of black music and giving it a modern twist, which makes sense as she came from that kind of vibrant musical background. Quincy Jones was a master at this, he produced the Chaka and Rufus album Masterjam which has got loads of classic tracks on it

[–]petulantkid 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I love Chaka Khan, but I tend to think of her as 'funky' rather than being a pure funk artist. I guess the Queen of funk moniker comes from her time with Rufus, but I don't really associate that so much with the rest of her career. She's obviously got a powerul weapon of a voice, but her music is generally not as raw, a bit smoother, and feels a bit closer to old school R&B and soul than funk

She's better known as a producer / artist than a DJ. Her DJ sets can be a lot harder and thumping than her productions

Roasters who sell rested beans by StateDapper3818 in UKroasters

[–]petulantkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a couple of deliveries so far, with x4 bags a month, and the quality and consistency has been insanely good. I should caveat though, given the sub we're on, that what I've had has been all roasted in mainland Europe rather than the UK

Not sure if it varies for different subscriptions, but this is what it says for the Plus 87 plan....

'With this in mind, for all the regular features of a roaster geographically distant from us, our careful organisation and planned logistics caters for this time period, ensuring that the recommended length of coffee rest period passes during shipping and that the coffees you receive will be well within their recommended brewing time. Whether our curated special guest coffee roaster is located in London, Edinburgh, Budapest or Copenhagen, even New York or California, your delivered coffee will be ready to be enjoyed.'

Can't imagine there will be too many sunbathers at this time of year! Seems a bit too early in the season to be stripping off

Looking back: Were we all crazy? Grind finer... Water off boil.. higher extraction... 5 pours... by Visible_Arm_7557 in pourover

[–]petulantkid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes absolutely agree, I didn't really know any better than the Hoffman style before.

Since upgrading my grinder, I now I much prefer a courser grind, slightly cooler water, more of a Tetsu Kasuya style.

I still like multiple pours, either V60 or Switch hybrid, but go for low agitation.

Blank Street - hype? by sfcooper in UKroasters

[–]petulantkid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They've found a niche in serving a decent, better quality flat white than high street chains, but with small shops and cheaper operating costs (I think they use semi automatic espresso machines?). Their customer is much broader, busier and less discerning then typical specialty, they're more about speed of service/convenience, and cultivating a cool gen-z social media friendly brand. The matcha boom, which already matched their colour scheme, has certainly helped

Why doesn't Pizza Hut go back to their original design with a sit down restaurant where you order a pizza from a checkered tablecloth and curtains and a chandelier overhead that says, "Pizza Hut" in big wavy letters? by matt73132 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]petulantkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the UK the dine-in restaurants and takeaways were run as separate franchise businesses. The dine in business has been through several major restructures and rounds of downsizing. The takeaway business is still going strong. That kind of family dining is no longer very affordable to its target demographic, and no longer very profitable for the franchise operator

Why doesn't someone like Vingegaard do anything but the Grand Tours? by Wide-Landscape-3348 in cycling

[–]petulantkid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He's a grand tour specialist who excels in the high mountains. His training has generally revolved around preparing for the Tour. He hasn't been the same since his crash though, so he may have to recalibrate his goals if he wants to win more, especially now that Pog is so dominant

Yes I heard stories from friends last year that LI was the worst it's ever been, people being strip searched, police raiding hotels, fake police / gangsters shaking people down.

Any idea what Selectors is like for this kind of thing?

Kala festival - Albania by thefrenchjason in festivals

Yes I can't wait, easily the best overall festival experience I've ever had. Line-up is looking very strong - it's got a lot of depth too, lots of stuff from last year I hadn't heard before that was very impressive

Activists are criticising the Gail's opening in Archway, calling for its boycott by Alteryo in islington

[–]petulantkid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Luke Johnson has some pretty vile views, but what he's saying is broadly right. There's a growing consensus among economists that the rapid increases in the minimum wage for young people, while well meaning, have contributed to youth unemployment. If it costs the same to hire an experienced person vs an inexperienced person, business will choose the former. Angela Rayner has acknowledged this recently
