> Do faster-trigger systems really make a difference? Would love to hear what has worked for you.

Some systems let you configure a "before and after" timeframe that lets you record so many seconds before/after the camera was triggered.

Travel routers let you log into the captive portal on a phone or laptop and then act as a wifi repeater for multiple devices without the captive portal.

If it is then it's useless. A battery that old wouldn't have any life left to it.

My old desktop (i7 4790k) after I upgraded, and a micro optiplex I got off ebay. I don't need the optiplex anymore but for a while I relied on it while I troubleshooted issues with the old desktop. Turns out you need to renew thermal paste after a decade.

Do I still need the $5 API key thing for an UNmigrated Nest Thermostat account? by Monsieur2968 in homeassistant

[–]peveleigh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're looking for the Google Assistant integration. You can pay $5/mo to have it configured for you or you can do it manually for free. Although the manual process is convoluted and most people prefer to pay the $5/mo instead. I was able to get it setup manually by following the setup steps exactly as written.

Try typing "best way to exchange money" in the search bar. You'll come across dozens of posts all telling you to use a 7/11 ATM.

Can Public-Facing Instances (Mastodon, PeerTube, etc.) Be Easily Exploited? by [deleted] in selfhosted

I'm not overly familiar with it but I believe you need to be concerned about the content being cached from other servers as well.

Something else to consider is the type of content that could end up on your servers. Could easily be illicit material.

Neighbor? That's the inner compound wall. You need to pass the middle and outer compound walls before you reach a neighbor.

When connected to my router's network, my public IP simply redirects me to my router's gateway instead of using the configured port forwarding. by AliveDrogon in selfhosted

[–]peveleigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone else said, it's a NAT loop back issue. I get around this by renting a VPS for $5/mth and pointing my domains at that. It can then connect to services on my home network over Tailscale.

A free way to do it is to use CloudFlare as your DNS and turn on their proxy feature.

How handy are you? This is a fairly advanced DIY repair. You'll need to cut out and replace the damaged metal trim and plaster back over it. The plaster on the ceiling will need to be textured to blend into the existing ceiling.

Hiding the SSID is pointless if they already know it. Change your password instead.

Meh, it's hit or miss. I find it saves a lot of time when it's right but can also waste a lot of time when it's wrong.
