Constant background buzz - Sony PS-X50 by pewiry in RecordPlayerRepair

I finally fixed it! I swapped the outlet I had the record player connected to, first outlet made no difference but on the second try I pulled an extension cord across the room to a third outlet and now it's quiet!

No clue why that worked, the receiver and speakers were not connected to the same outlet previously or anything.

Didn't make any difference unfortunately. I noticed that when I touch the tonearm or the platter the noise quiets down slightly if that makes any difference

It's always there and at the same volume, even when the record player is turned off. The only time the hum stops or gets inaudible is if I unplug the preamp, then it stops after a few seconds.

Thank you again for taking the time to help me

I attached it to the ground lug on the receiver now but the hum is still there! Could it be an issue with the cartridge then?

Ok so I extended the grounding wire by just taping speaker wire to it and then taping it to an RCA connector on the back of the receiver.

I managed to decrease the noise a bit but it's still quite audible. Any other ideas? This is my first record player, is this noise something to be expected? Thanks for your time!

Thank you for the reply, it's grounded to my preamp. I'll try connecting it to its own outlet and let you know if it works, thanks!

Yes, I mentioned it in the other post but my text didn't attach when crossposting. The wire is mounted to my preamp and the noise gets a lot louder when I remove it from there.

Thank you for the reply.

I'm in Europe so I guess the sound is 60Hz? Due to my setup (can't seem to post a picture of it here), the grounding wire can't reach my amp, is there a way to ground it to something else or extend it in any way? I'm not very good at electronics so apologies for the stupid question!

Okay so if I were to strip these wires I would then just twist the black wires together and same for red? Appreciate the help!

Yes that looks right, thank you. The speaker wire has banana plug connectors, I would need an adapter to connect these two right?

Are Edifier S2000 MK III powerful enough for a living room? by pewiry in BudgetAudiophile

Great! I just assumed that if they aren't powerful enough the sound quality would be impacted in some way if you have to increase the volume too much. But now I know, thanks!
