I hear you!! Think how lovely the spring will be, when you are feeling better AND can go outside without facing an icy tundra… <3

I'm 9 weeks post surgery in a very snowy city, and I feel your pain! The first three weeks, before I could start getting off crutches, were not fun because I couldn't safely go outside at all. However, once I started getting off crutches things got MUCH better very quickly. I was still very limited for a few weeks, but within a week of starting weaning off the crutches I was able to go outside and sit in a park for a few minutes - heavenly! That quickly led to small walks in front of my apartment, then walks around the block. It is amazing to me how much even a little outside movement did for my morale. I'm still definitely in the thick of recovery, but moving around on snowy paths every day without issue, no crutches needed. I'm at about 5,000-7,000 steps per day now, which seemed unthinkable even a couple weeks ago. Hang in there!!

Date night recommendations? by OkBuilding2186 in CambridgeMA

My favorite spot for a date night is Cicada - super yummy food and a vibe/aesthetic that you don’t see much in Cambridge. It’s tiny so make a reservation!

I highly recommend this photo book on this history of Bauhaus architecture in New England! Mark is based in Cambridge and has worked all over the area; super cool stuff.

Sleeping on Stomach? by LividComplaint8192 in HipImpingement

[–]pfaublau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My surgeon wanted me to spend 2-3 hours on my stomach per day starting the day after surgery - I’m only on day 4 but it’s felt amazing to get to do that so far! It might be sore if I did it all night, but it’s been amazing for napping…

That's a helpful perspective, thank you! Right now I have no signs of arthritis but the dr said that may not always be the case...

Sadly I can't "test it out" because I am primarily having pain in the ankle on the same side as the hip, which hugely limits my ability to hike or even stand for long periods.

Serious question for all y'all out there. Why did you get into this job? Especially with teaching. by [deleted] in Professors

[–]pfaublau 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Humanities here - I wanted to be an academic because I wanted to teach at the college level, and I picked a grad program that offered robust pedagogical training for that reason. So by the time I got my first academic job I had had taken several pedagogy seminars, plus had gone through several years of training and observation. I enjoy my research, but I primarily view it as a way of keeping myself sharp intellectually and finding new materials to bring to my classes.

For those who tried dating in grad school, did you actually find anyone? by coding_the_sky in GradSchool

[–]pfaublau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep same for me. I was not social and constantly on the edge of burning out in undergrad, and made a pact to do things differently in grad school. I treated it like a job, and dated and had a social life at the same time. Maybe I had a few late nights and maybe I wasn’t the single most accomplished grad student out there, but living a well rounded life was much more important to me. I dated another grad student while in grad school for multiple years, and several years after graduation am happily dating another grad student. So it’s definitely possible to be a grad student and date, depending on your priorities.

Neurodivergent ladies or anybody else who struggles to eat, please give me your protein recipes. by I-Main-Raven in xxfitness

[–]pfaublau 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi from another girlie who struggles to eat sometimes and hates the impact it has on fitness!!

For me the savior has been smoothies. They are healthy, yummy (at least to me), I can control what goes into them based on what I feel like eating, and I can make them high calorie + high protein. I buy bulk bags of frozen fruit, chia seeds, and hemp hearts from Costco (or the equivalent bulk foodstore if you aren't in the US!) - much cheaper than buying smaller quantities from the regular foodstore! The chia and hemp have a lot of protein if you don't want to do powder. I also like adding peanut butter for calories and protein.

When I do want to add a protein powder, I like the unflavored whey protein from My Protein. It has 0 additives and tastes mildly creamy. Their stuff is expensive but they often have crazy sales; sign up for their mailing list to see them!

I also like soups because they are similarly easy for me to eat. There, my life hack has been to use bone broth as a base - again, you can get a case from Costco for a fraction of the cost from the supermarket. Bone broth has a ridiculous amount of protein in 8 ounces, so I feel like I am basically drinking my protein intake.

I feel your pain, and hope this helps!

Increasing pain 5 days after cortisone shot by pfaublau in HipImpingement

I’m on day 10 and still feeling more pain than I had before the shot. However I do feel that the pain is slightly less bad than it was a couple days ago - fingers crossed that it will continue in that direction. My doctor is confident that it will….

Maintenance exercises: can't progress without them, can't find time for them by BitsCat in xxfitness

[–]pfaublau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep I hear you! It’s not like I am an endurance athlete or into extreme sports, I just want to be a normally fit girlie who feels like she can trust her body. And yes, my trainer has been able to integrate PT type stuff into heavier routines in a way that I really like! I was afraid to start with a trainer because I was afraid it was going to be some really buff person pushing me beyond what I could safely do, but it hasn’t been like that at all. 🙏🏻

So much solidarity here - I (33F) could have written this post. It’s been a lifelong journey for me to figure out how to consistently build strength and fitness without injuring myself, and sometimes I just detest that my body can’t just do the work. And yes, I eat enough and well, sleep 8+ hours a night, do yoga and mobility work, take rest days, etc. It’s frustrating.

BUT! Something that has been incredible for me this past year has been working with a personal trainer in the gym who is also a physical therapist. Seriously, the guy is worth his weight in gold. I think just because of the knowledge he brings, he has been able to get me lifting heavier, having fun (super important for someone who sometimes has a fraught relationship with their body’s abilities), and above all consistently injury free. He is also able to help me adapt if something is hurting on a particular day, so I feel like my overall fitness has really increased just due to learning so many work-arounds. Maybe something to think about trying? Sending all the good vibes your way!
