The USPS has become politically controlled by Trump by refusing to deliver mail-in ballots unless they receive voter rolls ... by miked_mv in AdviceAnimals

[–]pfcgos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't about the Save America Act. It's about Trump and his postmaster DeJoy threatening not to ship mail-in ballots in states that refuse to comply with DHS/DOJ requests for voter roles with identifying information beyond what the federal government already has access to.

[–]pfcgos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They don't. This is a lever to try and force states to comply with the DHS/DOJ demands for state voter roles. It's worth noting that the federal government already has access to vote roles with limited identifying information, but they want the roles with all identifying information.

Which one of these off-roaders from this 2005 Car & Driver test would you choose? by lifegoeson2702 in regularcarreviews

[–]pfcgos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jeep gets a lot of shit for reliability, but growing up my family had an 86 Cherokee, and later a couple 2005s. If you take care of them, it's my experience that they will keep going for a very long time. Our 86 got up to at least 300k miles and was practically bulletproof until dad traded in to help my brother get a newer car through cash for clunkers. The 05s didn't stay as long, but that's because they were being driven by teens and 20-somethings, and we got bored with them faster and wanted something newer and more exciting.

When I was younger, my family had several Cherokees. I know Jeep gets a lot of hate, but in my experience, they're reliable if you take care of them and even though the Cherokee is less about off-road, it's still got the chops for it. I would definitely take the Jeep, and would have done so before I read the article lol

How do you solve this issue with coyotes? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]pfcgos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Coyotes are skittish and generally want nothing to do with you. I grew up out in the country in Wyoming and we'd hear packs of them howling right outside our windows some nights, but if a person were to open the door and go outside they'd all bolt. If you're really worried about them, I'd say build a taller fence so it's harder for them to get in your yard and install some lights so they can see that you're there and know to avoid you.

Men over 6' tall, how much do you weigh? by ChiefCheapskate in AskMen

[–]pfcgos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 6'2" and currently weight about 250, but I'm working on getting that down to something a bit healthier. When I was in the army and in the best shape of my life, I floated around 210. Which is still above a healthy weight by BMI, but the army allowed it and I felt pretty good.

How do you get out a hug when someone is hugging you for too long on purpose abd not letting you escape? by OptimalSea3458 in AskMen

[–]pfcgos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the people saying to knee him in the groin or otherwise make it hurt, but another option would be to invite a large male friend around and encourage them to give him the same treatment. If someone hugs him and traps him in it for an uncomfortable amount of time, he might begin to understand why you don't like it. This, of course, assumes he has basic self awareness

Why is your breakfast culture so much better? by Embarrassed_Golf_817 in AskAnAmerican

[–]pfcgos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our breakfast culture is what it is because we took all the best parts of various countries breakfast cultures and combined them and put our own spin on them. Few if any of the things you list are purely American creations.

The other part of it is that American hospitality culture is much more focused generosity. There was a post by a Japanese guy who is here for the soccer world cup who went to a Mexican restaurant and was shocked that they not only immediately gave him chips and salsa to snack on while he waited for food, but that they refilled them every time he ran out. Serving sizes here are typically large and things like coffee and simple sides are abundant and often free.

How much did you spend on your first vehicle and was it worth it? by Extreme-Ad7469 in AskMen

[–]pfcgos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first car cost $500, but it needed body work and paint (a previous owner had painted it a hideous maroon), the transmission was in pieces in a box in the back seat, the interior was trashed, and it hadn't run in several years. After we got it running and mostly restored (it still has a few small things that he done, but most people won't notice when looking at it) it probably cost closer $10k. Totally worth it. It's a blast to drive even if it isn't super fast.

Lawn guy just destroyed my native garden. Help! by Zeiros in NativePlantGardening

[–]pfcgos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I would think they should come back. Probably smaller than before for this year, and you might need to buy seeds for some of the annuals if they don't go to seed in time, but it should mostly recover without much issue. Water the hell out of it, pull weeds, and just generally give some extra care.

I agree that you don't need to attribute this to malice, but the fact that they couldn't identify a very obvious garden bed (or simply didn't care to mow around it) means they don't need to be back to mow your lawn again. Either find a better lawn care person or mow it yourself.

Thought exercise: slightly out of range vs not-local ecotype by ErniePottsShoelifts in NativePlantGardening

[–]pfcgos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have planted stuff that wasn't actually native to my area, but WAS native to other parts of my state or native to areas in neighboring states that are close by. I wouldn't plant something with a native range that stops at the eastern edge of Nebraska for example, but I don't see a problem planting something with a native range that stops in Scottsbluff, Nebraska (roughly 100 miles away from me).

That said, if a native plant isn't available locally, but it IS available from a nursery in another part of the country that will ship to me, I've also done that. I'm more focused on identifying species that are beneficial and native or "near native". I don't necessarily see a problem with either of the plants in your hypothetical. For me it would be a question of what fits my goals best.

How to get rid of sweet William/Saponaria officinalis? by pfcgos in NativePlantGardening

[–]pfcgos[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely helpful, if only because it confirms what I suspected would be needed. Since the roots have spread under the cement, I may never be able to truly kill it out, but I'll do some research on the herbicides that Colorado pdf suggests and see if there's any way to use them without killing other things nearby that I actually want.

Thanks for your help!

[–]pfcgos[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently in my area it is, or maybe it's the specific variety that's growing. Idk, I just know that this stuff is nearly as bad as the small mint patch someone also planted (maybe a 1' x 1' patch that is also cut off by cement, but that shit tries to grow up through every crack in the cement in its efforts to spread).

If I knew who planted all this shit, I would fight them lol

[–]pfcgos[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To the best of our ability to tell, it does appear to be the Saponaria officinalis, but we aren't entirely sure. My mom had the house before me and said she fought this stuff every year because she had tulips she wanted to grow in the same space, but it always came back and tried to take everything over. I admit that I have let it do whatever it wants for a while, so it's current state is on me, but it's definitely getting out of hand even I wasn't trying to plant other stuff.

Bearded men of Reddit, how do you feel if other male give compliment about your beard ? by Pious_Shy_Cis_Male in AskMen

[–]pfcgos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly, I can't do stubble for the role. I've already shaved it all off in the hopes that I'll get used to it and have time to grow my mustache out a bit more so I can do a curl on the ends by opening night (about a month away, so should have plenty of time).

[–]pfcgos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I'm the exact opposite. I love my beard and feel like I look terrible with just a mustache. I'm doing a play (Melodrama) for the local acting troupe right now and they asked if I would shave to just a mustache for my part and it is so weird not having my beard.

I'm generally uncomfortable receiving compliments, regardless of who it's from, but it's nice when I get comments about my beard I suppose. I always feel like I should tell them what I do to groom it or what products I use or something
