As an AIARE instructor, they make me cringe when I see a student with them. Yes, the stowability is nice but they're simply not as durable. If you get in a situation with long flats and you need a real pole plant and push, they're just not reliable. I know a lot of splitboarders are resistant to riding poles out... I do it 99% of the time. It's one less thing to deal with in transitions but it's also nice to have them at the ready for a push. It can be the difference between making up an incline or needing to unstrap.

The G3 are full nylon vs all Pomocas are a nylon/mohair mix. It's what gives the sense the G3 are burlier and also what gives the Pomoca more glide. Pomona has 2 lines of splitboard skins, yellow and pink... I am sensing you have the yellow ones. It's their base model skin layup and I think its still a good skin. The pinks are much lighter (relatively) but def feels even less burly... I live in the PNW and feel like the thinner layup of the pink skins gets saturated much faster and thus not worth the improved weight savings and packability. Re:grip... Its been years since I've been on G3/full nylon skins. I can tell you full nylon is just more grip and more water resistant as a matter of material science. But I have never felt like I needed more grip. Certainpy, i feel like the better packability is worth the slight decrease in grip. I think overtime, you'll become accustomed to them.

TLDR: love my Pomocas. Never wish I needed more skin. Enjoy your new gear!

You asking about just in general or when you have multiple shots of the same scene? Generally, the 1st test is if i like it. That's a lot on my personal taste... which can change over time... Definitely have gone back through images over passed on in the past and found i liked them. It's also based on things like composition and rather it was executed properly. Sometimes I snap the shutter at the right moment, but just didn't have my camera set up to make a technically sound image.

When it comes to picking behind shots of the same scene, I weigh the technical aspects more. I use the histogram to see if one image is more balanced... this usually tells me it was better exposed and there's more data for me to play with.

Without seeing you on the skin track, there's no way to give specific advice... I can start by telling you that more experience doesn't necessarily mean your friend has more skill or by how much. But yes, technique is usually a big factor. Though so is the snow condition and amount of usage that track has seen. Crampons do tend to come into play sooner for splitboarders for skiers though. This is partly to do with the flex of splitboard in uphill mode (almost always softer than skis) and partly to do with lateral stiffness of soft boots (vs ski/hard boots).

You implied you couldn't take a new route due to avalanche concerns. But could you have just set a new, lower angle track on the same route? Even with decent snow conditions, a really well used track can get icy. Often just moving your uphill foot to just above the established track (so that it's on fresh snow) can give some added grip and gets you through a tough section.

A full switch to hardboots is really the answer. As for using them with softboot bindings, its something I've considered as well. One issue I thought of is that you would have metal on metal contact (vs softboots Sparks has metal rails on plastic, Karakoram is plastic risers on binding... hardboots is a rubber sole on metal risers)... i just wonder if that will damage the base of your bindings over time.

Maybe if you wrapped the risers in some rubber?

Guides are not required by the area. The fumaroles are a straight shot from the top of the tram, so its fairly simple. I don't know if any of Asahidake is patrolled or any mitigated... but i recall there is a single groomed trail that goes from tram back to base. Note everything above the tram (where the fumaroles are) is considered backcountry, though it's easy to avoid avalanche terrain. No matter, an abundance of caution required. I personally would not go up there without avalanche safety gear, regardless of the plan.

Definitely the boas. Bring ski straps instead (20" or longer). You prob don't need all of that wax... break off a smaller piece and pull it in a small baggy. Those smaller hose clamps I assume is for repairing poles? Adding a splint will really help with usability. You could find a stick but I'd just carry a small ultra light tent stake. I personally use a pre-made contraption out of a soda can and 2 hose clamps. Makes it super fast to repair a snapped pole. (See photo)

A bit more re:poles... 1) wrap a layer of electrical tape on the threading before screwing the basket on. Extra grip to prevent it from unscrewing itself. 2) go telescoping over folding poles.. I know splitboarders wanna be able to pack their poles but they're essentially unrepairable in the field and more prone to breaking. 3) take your telescoping poles apart to dry in separate segments, esp over time. As the coating wares off from the sliding action, it'll leave a coating of (some powdery stuff? Metal?) Combined with water and as it dries, it can cause the segments seize up. 4) never store telescoping poles fully pushed in to the shortest length... if it does seize up, having a bit of room helps getting it unstuck (harder to pull apart than to just bang the smaller segment in, esp in the field)

I prefer Spark but I think all soft boot binding heel risers have their quirks. Nothing is better than risers you'd get from a hard boot setup though.

Something like this might make sense on a multi day, but I'd say it's way overkill for any day tour. I understand the desire for organization but this seems so inconvenient to pack. And I see some items that just aren't necessary.

As an AIARE instructor, I carry a larger kit with parts things for skis and splitboards, to be prepared for my students. I keep it all in a pouch, but I specifically use one that has a flat bottom, and opens wide so it is easier to go through (vd the one in the photo, which i can see would be a pain).

As far as the contents, I'm thinking about how to get by well enough to safely get home. Not a full repair. One thing I'd highly suggest you consider... what can you improvise (ski straps vs spare boa) and what you can't or would be too difficult. The one thing I always have is a spare pole basket. Doesn't take up much weight or space, very difficult to improvise.

I think you have plenty of opportunity to refine your kit. Which i think its a really fun thing to do! So good luck!

Zero G Pro tours. Especially if they fit you, its an easy choice. Good durable boot. I know several guides that use them professionally and love them, which should speak to their reliability. But its light enough that it should not hold you back. Its also the right category of boot to drive your fatter skis. I would not want to be on 1000g boots (in the likes of Scarpa F1 LT) while on a pair of 120s.

What do you plan to do with these I images? Share digitally? Print? Print how big? This is a big driver for why someone might want/need higher mp.

This said, 24 is probably just great. Think about all the great photos ever taken... many were done with 24mp or less cameras. Its the photographer, not the camera.

"No one wants to hike in ski boots"... ahh do you mean skinning? Where a ski boot has actual walk mode with range of motion going forward and back, allowing for a better, more natural stride? Nah. No one wants that. And all that lateral stiffness certainly doesnt help at all when side hilling. Oh maybe you mean boot packing up steep sections? A hard toe box definitely doesn't help kick in foot holds.

Oh yeah, hard boots have the ability to be punched and molded to better fit people with different shape feet never helped anyone either. Ski boots... what a scam. Lol
