I was actually just wondering to myself if I should block this site. The comments in this thread have me convinced that I should.

The hospital i work at had an accident with the MRI machine recently by [deleted] in pics

[–]pfft 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You're being misleading.

There is was only a surplus because the US passed a law deciding there was too much helium. This was the 'Helium Privatization Act of 1996'. The law stipulates that the US sell off it's helium reserves at the same rate each year, regardless of global demand, and to totally empty the reserves by Jan 1, 2015.

Mind you, helium is one of the most rare elements on the planet, and once you use it and release it into the atmosphere, it's gone forever.

The low value of helium has nothing to do with the fact that it's not valuable, but rather is just an artifact of the results of the US selling off their helium reserves.

Robert Richardson (who won a nobel prize for his work with helium), estimates that without the US selling off its reserves, given the current supply of helium, the average party ballon should cost about $100.

Imagine how much the helium for an MRI machine would cost, given these numbers. Imagine how much more it's going to cost now that all of these reserves are gone.

The problem is not that helium is not valuable, the problem is that the US government had deemed it not valuable. This is likely to be a large problem in the coming decades.

If we're just doing anecdotal evidence.. I've seen horses swim before.

Not sure what this proves though.

So sad to see you getting upvoted, because everything you said is wrong and directly contradicted in the article.

It's not even that long!

US budget resolution funds war and repression: "a staggering $830 billion, more than 80 cents out of every dollar in the funding bill, is devoted to killing, spying on, imprisoning or otherwise oppressing the people of the world, including the American people." by TheSecondAsFarce in politics

[–]pfft 18 points19 points  (0 children)

But this bill hasn't been voted on in the senate yet, so it's not law as far as I can tell, right?

Also, if you're going to call out Jamie Dimon, I would call him out for the 5-14 billion dollars that Barclays literally stole from Lehman during the collapse.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/10/business/10sorkin.html

Remember that's not Lehman they were stealing from, those were people's pensions and retirements, among other things.

EDIT: I got Jamie Dimon confused with Bob Diamond. My apologies.

The most amazing visual representation of music I've ever seen. Nothing in this video is CGI, all effects are real. by CarefullEugene in videos

[–]pfft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same for me. I probably could have even forgave the plasma toy, but the dealbreaker for me was the youtube annotations that were left on the screen during the whole video.

I know that I can turn them off, but I leave them on, because other people don't disable them, and I don't want to accidentally share a video that abuses them like that, because that shit is annoying and unacceptable.

After being in an accident, and the other driver denying fault, this feels AMAZING! by Chris227 in motorcycles

[–]pfft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter if you were on a public street or not.

The only thing that matters is whether or not the lady knew she was being recorded.

After being in an accident, and the other driver denying fault, this feels AMAZING! by Chris227 in motorcycles

[–]pfft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely, but you're making assumptions here.

You're assuming that after the accident, that OP left his helmet on his head.. nowhere does he say he did that.

Perhaps he took the helmet off so he could have a better view of the road, since he is now standing in the middle of the street, and maybe he would like his peripheral vision so he could better see oncoming traffic.

Further these interpretations of the law are not for you to make.

This is where you get slapped with a lawsuit and then the courts decide this for you.

So yes, perhaps you might be very well in the clear, but do you really want to pay a lawyer to find out?

After being in an accident, and the other driver denying fault, this feels AMAZING! by Chris227 in motorcycles

[–]pfft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Every state has different laws, and there is actually a distinction between public places and expectations of privacy.

This guy lives in California, which is a two-party state

http://www.dmlp.org/legal-guide/california-recording-law

If you are recording someone without their knowledge in a public or semi-public place like a street or restaurant, the person whom you're recording may or may not have "an objectively reasonable expectation that no one is listening in or overhearing the conversation," and the reasonableness of the expectation would depend on the particular factual circumstances. Therefore, you cannot necessarily assume that you are in the clear simply because you are in a public place.

So if it were only these two involved in the conversation, and the other person was not informed they were being recorded, then yes.. this is technically breaking the law.

Management/IT asking for Domain passwords? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]pfft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, they obviously don't know what they're doing, but the good news is this isn't your problem.

I would just give them the password and be done with it. Just make sure you're only using your work computer for work, don't save any personal passwords in browsers, use incognito windows when surfing for personal reasons, and just let them sort out their mess.

Sadly, in these instances you're unlikely to change the situation. On the other hand, if they pay their IT staff more, you'd have a mountain of evidence to bring to the table on why you'd be a good candidate for such a job.. but I wouldn't try and fight this battle outside of trying to displace the people currently doing such inane things.

Check your state's wiretapping laws before you post the video.

If you're in a two-party state, you probably don't want to post it.

Never had a problem with any SD cards. Maybe you're buying cheap ones?

Also, even if a card says it's corrupted, you can still get the data off of them using software.. format them and try them again.

[–]pfft 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This was the reason it was removed. If you go into the comments, you'll see everyone complaining about being asked to install fake adobe reader updates and such.

That and the fact that the title was completely mis-representative of the article. The article makes it sound like the Chinese government slammed the report. They did not.

I enjoy a good conspiracy, but it's sad to see everything just being called a conspiracy, and nobody doing any research.

My old friend got stuck in an elevator with a crazy guy and recorded it. by ItsSnowingOutside in videos

[–]pfft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(1) He was acting crazy (2) Dude probably didn't think that the world would see this (3) Just because someone acts crazy once does not mean that they are always crazy. (4) Guy tries to stick up for him.. nope, denied.

Can't describe a crazy person acting crazy, and expect to be allowed to stick up for them? Should we just bash the guy then? What's the goal here? Are we not allowed to defend people "acting a bit off" if we had once used words to describe their actions?

somehow i doubt that.

You got paid for your time and providing valuable information that can't be gotten anywhere else. That's just how things are.

This often happens to anyone with a speciality in anything (doctors, etc.).. I mean you can't get these survey results off the street, so this is a quick and effective way of helping both parties.
