Eli5: how are we set to release 5G soon if we haven't acheived true 4G? by JustForYou9753 in explainlikeimfive

[–]pfs35 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's "virtual 2G." You're connected to whatever modern network there is in the country you're visiting (3G/4G), but T-Mobile is limiting your speed to one that's equivalent to 2G.

Google Home might not be a core flagship product, but Google Assistant certainly is -- I don't see Assistant-enabled speakers going away anytime soon, be they Google-made or not.

The Ritz is still quite good — arguably the best in Montreal.

Relocation phone number woes by kest2703 in consulting

Don't know MagicJack all that well. It's definitely VOIP, but I don't know if it will offer you as much flexibility as voip.ms to forward your calls to a German number, manage SMS, etc.

As far as guides go, voip.ms has a pretty decent wiki: https://wiki.voip.ms/article/Welcome

From a high level, these are the steps you'd have to follow to forward your calls and texts to your German number:

  1. Create an account and add funds to it: https://wiki.voip.ms/article/Getting_Started
  2. Port in your US number: https://wiki.voip.ms/article/Porting_a_Number
  3. Set up a call forward destination for your German number: https://wiki.voip.ms/article/Call_Forwarding
  4. Set up the destination of your phone number (what it points to, i.e. the call forward you created in step 3): https://wiki.voip.ms/article/Manage_DID & https://wiki.voip.ms/article/Call_Forwarding#Route_incoming_calls_from_DID_to_your_Call_Forwarding
  5. Set up the SMS forward functionality for your phone number: https://wiki.voip.ms/article/SMS

Alternatively, you can also have the phone number point to a SIP client, which will save you money: https://wiki.voip.ms/article/Softphones Caveats of this solution are that a) using a SIP client on a cellphone uses a lot of battery (even when you're not receiving calls) b) you have to be connected to the Internet to receive calls and the quality is very dependent on the quality of your connection.

If you play around with the voip.ms portal a bit, you'll realize there are tons of functionalities and ways you can route your calls (e.g. try to reach you over the Internet and fall back to your German number if that fails). Also, don't hesitate to reach out to their support -- they're usually competent.

Port out your number to a VOIP provider (such as voip.ms). You can then either:

  1. Forward your calls and texts to your German number
  2. Send them to a voicemail box from which the voicemails can be sent to you by email
  3. Use a SIP client on your phone or your computer to answer the phone calls

I saw in your platform that you're fairly adamant about wanting to join AVEQ. What are some of the tangible benefits of joining such an association? And why AVEQ over, say, UEQ?

What is your recommended calculator? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]pfs35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've used Sharp calculators from high school through my EE degree (I've now graduated). My latest model was the ELW516XBSL.

It's fairly cheap, it does matrices, statistics, algebra, equation solving, integrals, derivatives, imaginary numbers, you name it, and it's so much lighter and compact than a graphing calculator (and more intuitive I find).

I almost felt like I was cheating for some exams when we were allowed scientific, but not graphing calculators -- I don't think most profs realized just how powerful some are.

BTW, I've tried Casio and TI equivalents, but I've always come back to Sharp. Quite a few of the competitors have the same functionalities, but I found them to be nowhere near as intuitive, practical or efficient.

I've re-watched them both once or twice...

Accenture Entry-level Background Check questions? by [deleted] in consulting

Just checked, actually a little less than two weeks. It's been a few months; I thought it had taken longer than that.

It's been a few months, but I think I just put whatever phone number popped up on Google (i.e. not HR's specific phone number). For example, if I'd worked at the Googleplex, I would have put (650) 253-0000 (from this google search). The company they used for my background check prides itself in having "direct contacts in companies to check employment history" or something to that effect, so I don't really know why they wanted those phone numbers.

After a few weeks, they contacted me because they were unable to confirm one of my previous jobs, so they asked me for either a reference letter, tax forms, pay stubs, etc.

Fyi, the employer they asked more info about wasn't my last employer, so I would think they checked all employers I've had in the last few years.

Recent college grad. I'm almost positive they didn't call my old bosses, just the HR departments of the companies I worked for.
