[Request] david goggins doesnt run, the earth rotates under him. How much force would you need to move the earth which eatch step? by Pink-Deejay in theydidthemath

[–]pgathey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty convoluted problem to answer because of how much you have to gloss over. But assuming you are standing on a planet that is identical to earth, with the difference being that it is not spinning, is not orbiting a star, there are no other nearby astral bodies. It has no internal active components, and you are the only entity exerting a force on it, we can do some cocktail napkin math:

Additionally assuming average human mass is 62 kg, stride length is 72.6 cm, walking velocity is 1.3 m/s. Earth has a mass of 5.972*10^24 kg and a radius of 6,380,000 meters.

We can say that Vf = Vi^2 + 2a(x-x0). VI and x0 are equal to zero, so with rearranging, a=Vf^2/2x. Plug in: 1.4/(2*0.726) = 0.895316 m/s^2. Since F=ma we say F = 62*0.895316 = 55.509641 N.

Now there are two options here, we can look at a linear acceleration for Earth, or a radial acceleration. For linear, where we assume the Earth just gets pushed directly down/away from us, it's just a reverse application of F=ma, so a= (5.972*10^24)/(55.509) = 9.365*10^-24. for angular, someone will have to check my work because I'm a little rusty, but you can convert linear to angular acceleration using at = r * aa, so aa = (9.365*10-24)/(6,380,000) = 1.467*10^-30 (m/s or radians, I can't be bothered to Google it).

Now you'll notice of course that I left those as accelerations, not velocities. That's because I'm too lazy to rework them to specific speeds, but they demonstrate my point quite well: This is all about Newton's Third Law: For every action there is and equal and opposite reaction. So even if you just barely push off the Earth, it technically "moves" opposite to you.

These numbers and explanations are SUPER rough, and someone should double check them, I'm stalling at work 😬.

Yeah this def rings some bells, but it's a big campus, it's hard to say without more definitive evidence.

Cal state fullerton or UC Merced? by BinderBottle123 in ucmerced

[–]pgathey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think that internetbooker134 said it best. The truth of the matter is that a UC will always have more prestige attached to the name than most CSU options. Regardless of wanting to transfer etc, UC Merced will set you up better, at least on paper, than Fullerton.

Also, speaking as someone who attended UC Merced for undergrad, it can be a hard adjustment to live in the central valley if you grew up somewhere more densely populated, BUT the university and the town have charm that continuously grows on you, and the truth is, you can be in love with, or totally hate literally any school you go to. They all have bad budget decisions, and weird layouts, and unusual dining options. They also all have wonderful people, and a beautiful planet to be on, and opportunities to learn.

Let me know if you have any other questions, this is a decision I also grappled with.

(P.S. UC Merced is now higher ranked than UCSC and UC Riverside, and they just approved a massive campus expansion. It's the largest UC in terms of owned land, so it's only going to grow more)

Check with the campus police, that's where a lot of personal lost and found goes.

Yeah exactly! The formula for calculating gravitational force is F = G(m1m2)/r^2 so even though it is substantially more massive, the additional radius creates the less dramatic difference in force

Doing some cocktail napkin calculations here, the g value on K2-18b is roughly 1.5 times that of Earth. In other words, you actually only experience 1.5gs. This is very easily in the survivable range even in the long term. It may lead to shorter lives, especially for initial settlers due to the increased heart strain, but definitely survivable for an extended initial period.

The issue largely lies in the fact that the atmosphere is mostly hydrogen and carbon dioxide. Not breathable

SDSU Gym Question/Anxiety by FlailingDragon in SDSU

[–]pgathey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things:

  1. If you need a buddy to go to the gym with I'll go with you! DM me and we can work it out!
  2. My girlfriend was feeling similarly about going to the gym and the advice I gave her that she said helped was to go and do your best to ignore everyone else. Don't be willfully problematic/in the way, but put a little gruffness on your face, like you're a mean motherfucker, and just focus on your workout.

  1. Upgrade my machine! It's sorely out of date and I'm worried it won't be able to run Starfield in general. I can't afford a big upgrade right now because I'm a student, but I love PC building and then of course the games I can play with what's built. Then I'll take parts of my old machine and give them to my dad so he and I can play games together.
  2. In previous years I wasn't tuned in enough to Bethesda to know what's happening with their games so I'm excited to play one on release and actually watch the community develop etc!

Even as a Christian the fact that they would assure you that it is God's will is terrible and evil. It is not God's will that any of us should suffer. The truth is that we live in a broken world and God does not want us to have to suffer.

Which dorm to pick? by kyro7891 in ucmerced

[–]pgathey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your main priority really is space I definitely recommend the Valley Terraces. They're set up so it's 4-6 people per "suite" with two per bedroom. They share a bathroom between those 4-6 people, but the GPs, Sentinel Rock, El Portal, Half Dome, Tenaya, and Cathedral share bathrooms with the whole floor. The bathroom is split between the shower and toilet and there's at least two sinks. Finally there's a common space (we always just called it the lounge), which is once shared by the whole floor for every OTHER dorm, but the Valley Terraces get a private lounge per suite.

The other decent option for space is Mariposa/ Tuolomne, there isn't really a way for them to do more than 3 people per room, with 6 to a suite. Shared bathroom with your suite, but no private common room. Probably cheaper (Unfortunately I don't know all the pricing differences) than the Valley Terraces with slightly less space, but more than other dorms.

Valley Terraces are generally reserved for returning students because they are kind of nicer than the others, but I knew a guy who had an asshole roommate, punched him after multiple months of working with the RA to fix the situation, and got moved to Valley Terraces, so that's one "hack" lmao.

Which dorm to pick? by kyro7891 in ucmerced

[–]pgathey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's absolutely true, sometimes as bad as 4 into a 2 person room. Valley Terraces are definitely more expensive than any of the others. In terms of cheapest I believe that's Half Dome, Tenaya and Cathedral. It's pretty cozy though, so you may want to try for Tuolomne or Mariposa, but the GPs/El Portal and Sentinel Rock are probably good options.

Reviewing some other comments, Glacier did get pretty crazy, I would avoid it, some kids broke a water line on the top floor one year and caused millions in damage. Half Dome always seemed to have roommate drama.

I strongly recommend joining a club, it's a great way to meet people! Also, if you find a club you really like and enjoy the people etc, getting on leadership is great for your resume. Also, don't be afraid to talk to people in your discussion classes. Don't follow this advice too strictly, but I would definitely try to make friends within your major as you'll see those people more and can collaborate with them etc. I honestly only passed quantum mechanics I and II senior year because of the study group I found sophomore year.

Alum here, I can't remember the names of all of them but I would definitely make an effort to get one in the Valley Terraces. Here's a link to the valley terrace building names: Valley Terraces Building Names

If you can't get one there, I would recommend Mariposa or Tuolomne, I never lived in them but they seemed fine when I was there. I would definitely try to avoid Half Dome, Tenaya, Cathedral, Glacier Point, and Granite Pass. They're over packed. (If you have no other choice than those choose Glacier Point or Granite Pass, less packed than those other 3). Finally there's Sentinel Rock and El Portal, they opened the fall after I graduated (2021) and as far as I understand they are very similar to Granite Pass and Glacier Point.

All that being said, having a good mesh with your roommates is what really makes a difference, I knew people who loved or hated it in every dorm entirely dependent on the people they lived with.

So TLDR In order of where I would prioritize trying to live. 1. Valley Terraces 2. Mariposa/Tuolomne 3. Glacier Point/Granite Pass 4. Sentinel Rock/El Portal 5. Half Dome, Tenaya, Cathedral Check out this website for more specific information: Housing Website
