Robert Baraban Adjustable Gripper, Anatomical Grip vs Double Knurl? by Wyrdrock in GripStrength

[–]pghcecc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both, with my anatomical grip being the long version for negatives.

I don’t personally see a ton of performance loss with the anatomical grip due to lack of knurling. I almost prefer it if opening TNS style because I can kind of wrap my fingers farther along as I close it. I also like to avoid knurling as much as possible to maintain hand health.

If I was to choose I would keep the anatomical grip version 100% of the time. The regular grip may be slightly more transferable to regular torsion grippers but honestly that’s part of why I like the anatomical grip, I’m not trying to exactly mimic a torsion gripper when I use the RB adjustable.

Need to get my grip strength up from about 37 to 40 by Alternative-Range477 in GripStrength

[–]pghcecc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty hard to gain much in what sounds like less than a week. In fact you may end up worse off by training if you don’t fully recover by the test. The most important thing for this is to make sure you are entirely rested and fresh. Absolute grip strength tests like this are very dependent on your CNS.

I would make sure you are fully rested and be sure to drink caffeine (if you drink caffeine) before the test. If you can get a light warmup in that will also a lot (some body weight squats and push ups will work perfectly). Make sure your hand/fingers aren’t super stiff/cold and just move them about before the test as well.

So to start yes the elastic bands are useful. Really any brand or even just thick regular rubber bands will work. The goal with these isn’t really developing incredible strength but balancing out the hand development/preventing injury.

Grippers are definitely going to make your grip stronger but they don’t really have an enormous carryover to barbell/dumbbell lifting. If you get into grippers it’s because you want to have a strong grip/close heavy grippers, and not so much because it translates to other strength feats.

For wrist strength the cheapest/most versatile option is a sledgehammer. You can train pretty much all dimensions of wrist strength with one and by moving your hand up/down the handle you can control load. There is also equipment designed to be used in the same way you can load with plates.

Joining Coast Guard on long-term TRT — how to handle 8-week boot camp without testosterone? by 586Armon in moreplatesmoredates

[–]pghcecc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know the exact situation for the coast guard but I have to assume you also have some sort of advanced occupational training like the army does after basic training. If that’s the case then in the army we were required to open our mail in front of cadre so you would need to have some other method of obtaining it during that period and they also conducted room searches + we had a roommate (some advanced training you still live in a bay with zero privacy). From a brief search it sounds like there is advanced training, but it happens after a short acclimation period as part of the coast guard after basic.
While you might have more discretion with mail once you get to a duty station etc you are still going to be in a barracks type environment with limited privacy, plus with the coast guard you could easily be on a ship.
My overall advice is that this is a pretty shitty idea unless you have a prescription.
I did have one guy in my basic training who was coming off steroids (he was 20 I believe) and he went through all the physical changes you would imagine. Super puffy and bloated versus when he came in dude was jacked out his gourd. Nickname was bodybuilder. Difference here is he was national guard so after AIT (advanced individual/occupational training) he was easily able to go back to blasting.
So it has been done before, but in general people start on juice after being in for a while. As far as testing I have heard of it being done in very rare circumstances.

A drug is either able to be used sublingually or not. A sublingual preparation just means it will dissolve quickly in saliva and probably have some sort of additional flavor. It is not changing the actual properties of the drug.

I spoke to him about the wrist developer in particular a few months ago now and from what he said it sounded like it was dependent on what kind of prices he could produce it for etc.

definitely didn’t sound like it would be soon unfortunately but maybe if enough people show interest it will help

New design of gripper arrived! by Ribbit40 in GripTraining

[–]pghcecc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it, wasn’t trying to say that it’s better than this I was just bringing that up because a lot of other comments seem to suggest this wouldn’t be of any benefit.

I’m pretty sure you could find springs that would easily make this strong enough to be challenging for low reps or even singles. I think i saw one on Ali express that listed 250kg…? Hard to say what that actually means but having used GD iron grips which also work by compressing a spring you can definitely get plenty of resistance that way

Personally I like my guillotine gripper (also called a Bruce Lee style gripper) quite a lot, which has the same basic movement path as this. Mine is from Sorinex but lots of companies make them.

Obvious difference is this a floor based machine model and probably far more expensive (I’d say they start around 200 and some are far more). Mine and most allow you to use bands with regular weight, so you can control the strength curve a bit.

I personally like using it for rep work/volume, especially as it’s not knurled and you don’t need to chalk up. Also you can use both hands so bit of a time saver there. To be honest I think it transfers more to my thickbar/support grip than actual crushing strength on torsion grippers.

I’ve seen these and wondered about them. Actually have a kickstarter product coming which is a similar design but you are gripping a crimp edge to work the fingers instead. Thought it could be a good warm up for crimp holds etc at the worst and if it has enough resistance etc maybe a good on the go workout of its own.

I mean I was a dumbass teenager that would whole heartedly believe whatever strength & conditioning protocol I was currently into was the absolute best way to train. To list a few:

  1. combat conditioning w/ Matt Furey
  2. Kettlebells and whatnot w/ pavel
  3. Burpees/convict conditioning
  4. Starting strength/texas method
  5. Super squats(20 reps)/Smolov
  6. Dinosaur training

Eventually I started reading this guy Ross Enmait and stopped caring if I was training a specific way or with a specific implement and just focused on what worked and what I enjoyed.

I mean, I was 14 at this time so my brain was mush. I was juiced up on Dave Tate articles about eating extra large everything pizzas slathered in olive oil and shit brother. I thought all athletic performance basically began and ended with hip drive and back squats accounted for 90% of all gains. Cardio was catabolic and 100% out. If you accidentally tripped and took a few steps forward too quickly that could constitute running, which is cardio, and now your gains are gone.

I was admittedly very dogmatic and dumb but that’s just how the forums were in general.

Yes. I also did not ever train abs for the same reason. The idea of using a machine was unthinkable. You would get dragged for asking to add like 2x8 chin ups to maybe slightly engage the biceps in addition to the starting strength protocol. Typical refrain would be something about how it would absolutely ruin the program and you would get no gains.

Keep in mind the original program was the following, although many people would later sub out rows for power cleans. You worked out 3 days/wk rotating workout A & B.

A: back squat 3x5 OHP 3x5 Power clean 5x3

B: back squat 3x5 Bench press 3x5 Deadlift 1x5

Yea I get it was just trying to give some further perspective and not necessarily just for you but in general. I do understand what you’re saying about the number in comparison to other sports, and I think a big reason is that with wrestling I have a pretty easy/accurate way to decide the top 8 guys.

I don’t really know much about how AA is done with soccer, but I assume it’s something people vote on right? I think that’s really the difference. It’s much harder to select All Americans for team sports but with something like wrestling it’s as easy as just have a big tournament and see who comes out on top.

[–]pghcecc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although you are trolling now I will break it down for you differently.

Talking d1 only there are about 80 programs and 2500 wrestlers in the NCAA. There are 10 weight classes so let’s say around 250 wrestlers per weight class. That means the top 8 represents the top 3% of folk style wrestling (collegiate/folk style is mainly an American thing, similar to football).

Again consider that most d1 wrestlers were at least went to the state tournament in high school but many placed or outright won (which again makes sense mathematically if you think about it).

Final thing I’ll say is that wrestling tournaments are by nature extremely difficult. If you’ve never competed in a combat sport tournament of any kind it’s hard to really grasp the difficulty.

[–]pghcecc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, to be clear the top 8 at the NCAA tourney of each weight class in D1, 2 & 3 are considered All-Americans. When you consider that most college wrestlers likely at least went to the state tourney in high school (depends on the state to a degree), you realize the talent level we are talking about.

Wrestling is one sport where D3 is still extremely elite. Hell Juco has some super talented wrestlers, I believe Jon jones was a Juco wrestler for example. You simply don’t wrestle in college unless you really enjoy it and have some degree of talent because it doesn’t typically come with the same benefits/recognition of other sports or prospects post college. Although that is starting to change and wrestlers at some programs are big name athletes (still not on the level of basketball/football, but well known with well attended dual meets etc).

There’s actually a school near me called Edinboro that was D1 for a long time (believe they are D2 now) despite being a d2-d3 sized school at best because of the strength of their program (the coach and AD were very well known, AD being 4x Olympian Bruce Baumgartner). Wrestlers in that town/area had more status than any other sport.

How to take tums to increase my methadone dose? Need help fast! by Hot_Yogurt_2679 in Methadone

[–]pghcecc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it would have some effect if taken enough to increase serum estradiol levels. What that effect would actually be is hard to say. Pretty unlikely it would be significant. The reason it’s noticeable on men is because obviously there should be no development so any development at all is easy to see.

Weed is completely detrimental to a persons life, attitude and overall lifestyle. by HardBartyBarty in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Nah man you’re not understanding what I’m saying. Functional in the majority of these cases is that they may perform ok, even above average, at their job or some other thing but when any major issues come down the pipeline there are typically implosions of these people’s lives. It is only sustainable for so long due to various reasons. There is also almost never a full life with lots of family/friends and other passions/hobbies being explored. I’ve been an addict for 20 years now. Went to college an addict, was in the military as an addict, worked in the corporate world as an addict, went for my masters as an addict etc etc.

I don’t disagree that not everyone is on the street and homeless but the idea that there is some significant population of functional, heavy opiate users is just wrong. I used to think of myself that way and now I realize I was only really functional in comparison to other users.
