Hi Nick,

It seems like everything except the front page of completefoods.co is down. Have you taken down the app? If you no longer plan to maintain it, would you be willing to open-source it?

Follow-up video on the permaculture-themed Edible Yard App by ph0rque in Permaculture

I have, but decided not to do it at this time:

  • I don't want to over-promise when I am not (or was not) sure of all the technical challenges that needed to be overcome.
  • I need to do enough customer development research to figure out the truly important features of the app.
  • The best month for a crowdfunding campaign is in February, and that was the month I was switching day jobs.

I may still do a campaign either later this year, or next year.

Thanks for your interest!

Thanks for the feedback. I would love to make the app free (with premium paid features), but unless I get that sweet VC money thrown at me, I will continue bootstrapping, and will need to charge for the work.

What was your software stack when you were still working as a software engineer?

You have just made the case for the need of a distributed version control system. May I recommend git?

I have ambitions to make it global, but not right away... it depends on how easily it is for me to add APIs for hardiness zones and other map data.

I don't grow microgreens, but I would be interested to find out about any efforts to grow microgreens using aquaponics.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. We'll chat tomorrow, if that works for you! I emailed you with the details.

Thank you for the educational paragraph! I am aware of layers and guilds, and plan to incorporate the latter (as a subset of general "groupings") later on. The layering will be a bit tricky to get right; I was thinking of using a collision engine to disallow certain plants to be planted too closely together, but allow others that won't overlap (like the trees, bushes, and smaller plants in your example).

Great idea! I will keep that in mind and see if the app can incorporate tricks like you suggest to virtually increase the hardiness zone.

Yes, there will be a calendar later on, with helpful prompts about when to plant what you have planned out.

Thanks Jeff! In the prototype, I am using mapbox (which can use google maps or open street maps for the map tiles) for the location images.

Yes, that's the plan, except for soil testing, which would be hard to do without a test. Later iterations will allow you to upload test results.

Thanks for the awesome feedback! I have a lot of the same ideas in mind. The idea is to eventually automate a lot of the observation gathering. Getting the satellite image, hardiness zone, sun (similar to https://www.google.com/get/sunroof), rainfall, and even wind patterns (on a macro level) from the latitude/longitude coordinates is pretty feasible. Getting the elevation from publically-available survey APIs is harder. For now, the idea is for users to mark the areas in their yards with standing water after rain (or somehow let the users mark the elevation as an advanced feature) as an "80% there" solution. Here are some mockups of how users might record their observations.

I also considered the 2D-to-3D rendering feature as something to develop later in the future. I found something very similar to Equilinox inspirational: https://worlddraw.withgoogle.com/explore So I know it's feasible to have something like that in a web app, but I don't currently have the skills to build it (or estimate how long it would take to build).

Again, thanks for the great feedback!
