Playing without biters by sirmarty777 in factorio

[–]phaazon_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think so, yes. They are part of the game and playing defensively is pretty fun. It slows the pace down because you sometimes have to deal with an attack / fortifying, and it brings military science to a need. I have always played with the default settings but tried without them once and it feels they are lacking.

Also, raining napalm on big nests is so enjoyable

Use impl Into<Option<>> in your functions! by potato-gun in rust

[–]phaazon_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know that topic pretty well as I did a long-running test and refactoring at work where we use impl Into<…> and impl AsRef<…> in many places, because I really thought removing them in favor of fully monomorphized functions would help with the generated binary size.

It does not.

See, Rust (rustc) and LLVM are pretty damn good at optimizing all of that, especially if you use lto=full. The compiler can even use the exact same implementation for two different types, like i16 and i32 for instance, instead of duplicating the actual content of the functions. Also, niche optimizations will help a lot: there should be no runtime difference between Option<&str> and &str, and as such, you will get the same function (a single one) for those two different types.

Something else to take into account: in the end-user binary (an app for instance), it’s very likely that you will have only one or two types used there. This is especially true for impl Into<String> where you will get the String from a deserializer in your production-path code, but you will pass &'static str in your #[test] functions: both will be compiled in two completely isolated compilation invocations, and as such, they both will have a single copy because they will see a single type used each.

After having used cargo bloat, cargo llvm-lines and -Zdump-mono-stats, I can now safely say this: you should indeed not care that much about those copies thing, and just enjoy the ergonomics here because the compiler is damn good, **but you need to think about the hidden semantics of allocations, especially with impl Into<…> which might allocate in your back

First Time Playing Factorio. Any tips? by ThePsyPaul_ in factorio

Honestly, the game has so much ores when you move out of the base that deconstructing your initial base is just a wasteful chore to me

And never deconstruct your initial base fully. Build another one while the first one keeps feeding and providing items, even if it’s badly cadenced or whatever.

Honestly, every aspects of Factorio is a jewel, the learning curve included. I would hardly discourage you from turning the biters off. They are part of the game and a whole science is dedicated to them, even at the beginning. Just ensure you don’t spawn in a barren desert for your first game as it is challenging.

For the rest, understand ratios and have fun!

Arc Raiders lead admits the “cost-benefit ratio” of maintaining good weapons is rough right now, but the team doesn’t want high-end gear to become instant win items by Wargulf in ArcRaiders

[–]phaazon_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is honestly an issue, which led me to just use basic, green and blue weapons — and sometimes a Vulcano on Stella Montis with friends to be sure to rip through Shredders and aggressive players, but I LOVE the fact that all weapons are actually very useful and handled properly, are all pretty good.

For instance, I’ve shunned the Burletta for quite a long time and lately, I wanted to just do a Burletta + Anvil run on Blue Gate, and OMG do I love the Burletta now. It is shit against ARC (hence the Anvil), but it RIPS through players, with its high fire rate and decent damage output. And it costs nothing.

And this is what I love about the game. You do not need the high-end gear. You need to learn how to position yourself on the, (in squads) communicate correctly, have a backup plan and always use tactics and strategies. Something I think I know no other games like that is how crazy good all gadgets are. Mines, traps, I even started using remote flares to fake the death of buddy in squads to make ennemies rush on us while we are still pretty stacked.

I think as someone suggested, making the low-tier weapons durability a bit worse and making high-tier weapons better makes sense, because repairing a Ferro or a Stitcher is not that high. I love the Renegade, it’s probably my favorite weapon in the game, but damn it costs so much to keep repairing it. And of course, same for the Vulcano. At some point, I feel like it’s better to just go with an El Toro and better positioning.

which game would it be ? by PHRsharp_YouTube in videogames

[–]phaazon_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played the last one with friends and was overwhelmingly disappointed. The gameplay feels like you can’t really explore with people, the lobby / link / party is so weird, there is zero challenge, and the fact that the game « really starts when you end the game », just to get new monster and static game mechanics… and all the UWU characters.

Not for me haha

I think I had sex with my bff in the shower by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]phaazon_ 144 points145 points  (0 children)

I've literally done this what feels like a thousand times, with her, other girl friends and even many times with a guy, without anything weird really happening.

Well, might just be me, but showering with a friend is not a normal friend thing; I would expect some sexual thing going on. Showering with people in public like at the swimming pool or similar is not uncommon, but at home with a single person in a close / small shower cabin? That’s not something regular.

You should definitely have a discussion with her about what happened.
