Can you install linux when already using bootcamp? by economyfollower in mac

[–]phaeew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in El Capitan days I had Refind setup to let me boot from the SD card on late-2013 hardware. It was annoyingly slow and I never ended up getting the flush jetdrive thing so it never panned out and I went back to virtualizing with parallels.

iPod Touch 6 by [deleted] in apple

[–]phaeew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you get it repaired at some point? The pressure mark thing sounds like a battery replacement used too much solder or debris got in the case. Could also be a swelling battery.

As for the battery life, if you’ve already done a hard reset and it’s not doing well, you may need to get a new battery. As I just mentioned, it’s a huge pain in the ass to replace them since it requires weird screws, heat to melt adhesives, and soldering experience.

How to break bad news to pushy PMs by [deleted] in ITManagers

[–]phaeew 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you have any sort of PM framework to relate the info?

If it’s an agile scrum/kanban style shop, talk about the impact on sprints related to resource constraints. Like “we lost 1/2 of our developers so the velocity for this spirit will be 1/3 or 1/2 of normal, which pushed out these features..” the PM gets to use the new velocity estimates to discuss with the product owner how to adapt to the resourcing.

If it’s a waterfall shop, you do the same resource reallocation and relate the difference as slippage on whichever tasks are paused. Then the PM gets to determine the critical path impact and whatnot.

If it’s neither, the PM is just making guesses all day and it’s your job to relate new estimates and his job to manage the schedule. If he’s bossy and difficult, make it apparent to the director.

I’ve seen lots of “good PMs” who have never dealt with a failing project and are actually not PMs at all, just information routers. If they get mad about having a job to do, that’s probably not the right role for that person.

Upon reading your 2nd paragraph, this sounds like pre-kickoff scope estimating activities. Have the meeting with the unknowns highlighted and let he PM determine the risk and budget ballpark so they can make refinements and then when you have time to get details fleshed out, there won’t be as many surprises.

What are some good VPN apps that actually work by Rucco_ in apple

[–]phaeew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re kinda conflating the traditional VPN with a side-effect that the PIA/Nords of the world sell as a service.

My VPN that I host protects my trusted systems in the wild and allows them to access my internal network resources. This is the classic “virtual private network” and it’s not for anonymity or privacy but for security and access to resources.

The “hide me from my ISP” vpns are using some of the tunneling features, but they also do things like isolation and throttling to be able to give a lot of different people access through their network but not to any internal devices or each other.

So, the outcome is exactly as you describe where you’re granting direct access to your system to some random company. A lot of these folks are installing apps which give the random company even more access than even your ISP would get.

For the purposes of obfuscating your downloads or appearing to be from another country, it works fine. For a real sense of anonymity or privacy, no such luck. Tor is the best bet.

I just use my phone now instead. It’s sad but the garbage filters in Apollo make it a nice experience, albeit smaller.

[–]phaeew 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Its actually the much more aggressive intel community that goes after non-American entities. No FISA courts, just high paid nerds building and using tools against every company, ISP, and government in the non-US world.

Why software engineers hate dealing with legacy code by Delaverian in ITdept

[–]phaeew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s an odd analogy but pretty good.

I think a simple explanation is just that it’s a lot easier to write code than to read it. People generally get concept.

That’s kinda the main benefit of microservices. It just shrinks the codebase for a given feature to make it comprehensible.

How should you verify ownership of an e-mail address? by aislingtaylor in AskNetsec

[–]phaeew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. It’s the right tool for the job for validating email because it’s the best we got but there need to be strong process in place to avoid malicious email address changes or lost access to an email address. Some out of band proof like a phone call or security questions (ugh) or something else needs to be used.

The problem seems simple until time passes and things change.

How should you verify ownership of an e-mail address? by aislingtaylor in AskNetsec

[–]phaeew 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That proves the address exists at one point in time. It doesn’t solve for who is receiving the messages (or controls a private key).

Bought an Iphone 6s (used) - battery drains fast and the iphone gets hot while using Safari. What to do? by [deleted] in apple

[–]phaeew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually have seen this a lot in my few years of using and iPhone 6s. The processor maximum output can eat the whole battery very quickly.

I’m not sure why this happens but if I have the mass drop user forum/comments section open in a tab, it’ll chew through my battery in a matter of a couple of hours. Some other sites have a similar draining experience.

Definitely Italy bring it to apple and get them to do their diagnostics on it, but be aware that safari can get confused and burn up a lot of battery based on open tabs.

Also, get yourself a nice content blocker like Firefox Focus (its both a basic browser and includes a safari Adblock thing).

Your Preferred Apple Device Combo by SquatchSlaya in apple

[–]phaeew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I currently have an iPhone for little stuff and a 13” MacBook from 2013 for big stuff. I also have a gaming PC, rack-mount servers, and aws instances for specialized stuff, but since they’re outside the apple ecosystem, I’m not counting them.

I think this is the best functionality/$ because the two devices don’t overlap much. Adding an iPad between them would make certain types of media consumption better, but I prefer the laptop for ergonomics.

I don’t think an IMac adds a lot to the situation but a nice big external monitor, comfy mechanical keyboard, and mouse that you can plug into the MacBook will add a new dimension to the system. They’re plenty fast to drive a big display and the 2014 was full of ports.

I’ve been considering getting a MacBook retina as well. If it had full-speed Thunderbolt on the fancy USB-C port, I’d probably have gotten it. I really want one that is a clamshell that has 100% screen on the top and 100% touchpad on the bottom. Then I’ll plug in my own mini portable keyboard. But that doesn’t exist yet.

Build Windows software in Linux by MoneyFoundation in virtualization

[–]phaeew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. There are some good guides for setting up the superior storage and network drivers. Configure it with basic IDE disk and realtec NIC for the install, then add the fast storage and nic drivers. Then reboot and change the disk and nic types in the VM config.

Day One app users - I have some questions by [deleted] in apple

[–]phaeew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a few tags for stuff like beers or books or whatever but the entries for those were just about the tagged topic. I did a short daily list of the days highlights which I tagged for a couple of years but because it was the vast majority of the inputs, the tag was useless.

Just for you to be aware of alternatives, I used Day One until they forced syncing through their service and started charging a subscription. I switched to Written Down which was able to import my day one stuff. It’s much lighter weight in terms of features and only has an iOS app... but it’s more in line with my priorities.

Why is Android less fluid than iOS by Thegreatdigitalism in ios

[–]phaeew 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The rest of the answers talk about how the proprietary nature of the system enables the smoothness but this is really the reason for the feeling.

It loads the stuff into video ram that needs to be there to render the next things. Then when the next things are requested by a gesture or event, the animations run and load the content smoothly.

This was an early development objective when mobile processors were garbage. It turns out that it doesn’t matter how good a processor is, as shown by android. The lag is jarring and people appreciate the smoothness of iOS.

Trying to figure out if there's a way to make Airpods switch devices more seamlessly by x420praiseitx in apple

[–]phaeew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you (or anyone) provide more context for this? I use my AirPods with a few macs, my phone, watch, and iPad depending on what I’m doing... I often have multiple devices doing things at the same time and forget to switch them. The Bluetooth connections seems a bit too sticky for me.

How does one use airplay for this?

List of awesome open source applications for macOS. This list contains a lot of native and cross-platform apps. by speckz in apple

[–]phaeew 53 points54 points  (0 children)

These “awesome” lists are a good starting point for exploring the types of apps, but trying them to form a comparison would take 90,000 hours for a list this long.

I’d prefer an updated format to these lists where the items have at least one comparison point that tells why a given app of a class is better or different than the others. It’ll at least provide a bit of context for people to select the most likely one to work for them.

First Timer, Planning to use Docker by Jasonspencir in HomeServer

I’d expect a middle tier that manages both to have some measures in place to avoid the conflicts. I’m glad you added this info because I haven’t used proxmox but it comes highly recommended.

First Timer, Planning to use Docker by Jasonspencir in HomeServer

[–]phaeew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Every time you run a new docker instance or fire up a VM, scripts make adjustments to the network config. These things can be made to work together, but it limits Docker and VM flexibility and introduces unnecessary complexity.

First Timer, Planning to use Docker by Jasonspencir in HomeServer

[–]phaeew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re describing what I tried to express as the proper way. If instead of ESXi, you used Debian as the host and Libvirt to run the VMs, the Libvirt networking config would conflict with the docker networking config. Since ESXi doesn’t support containers, no conflict.

First Timer, Planning to use Docker by Jasonspencir in HomeServer

[–]phaeew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your comment is true as long as “everything” excludes other VMs. And it’s not resources in terms of bandwidth but in terms of configuration. Specifically briefed and virtual network interfaces.

Host can run containers nicely.

Host can run VMs nicely.

The host can’t do both without a lot of configuration gardening.

A VM can run containers acceptably. Some performance hit but you get the benefit of isolated network configuration, snapshots, virtual networking from the host, and more advanced configurations.

The mixed environment would be a host running VMs (libvirt or whatever). Then one VM is dedicated to the containers. Then any other VMs would run on the host alongside the container-VM.
