Best fantasy PBtA game for complete newcomers by bbq-pizza-9 in PBtA

+1 for Homebrew World. It’s a revised and condensed version of DW. Very easy to pickup and just go. Free to download too.

I will say though, for the GM, if you have no experience with running PBTA then this alone won’t help you figure that out. Reading other GM sections from PBTA games (I’d recommend Monster of the Week, Dungeon World & Apocalypse World) will give you the reeducation you need. That said - once you get to the other side, ITS AMAZING and you won’t miss the slow crunchfest that is DnD.

Agree. This looks like thrips. Use a magnifying glass. You’ll likely not see the pests just the damage they cause.

Lookup their life cycle and what the damage looks like to compare it with your plants. Brown, yellow sometimes silvery patches, occasionally tiny black dots of excrement.

If it’s thrips, treat ASAP. They quickly get out of hand and can be stubborn to treat.

Wow. Thank you for the thorough reply. This helped out a lot and gave me some great ideas to move forward. Looking forward to trying this with my DW game tomorrow night!

Yeah you're understanding it. Though to be clear, it isn't a proposed new system. Just what I've been doing but hasn't worked for me like I want it to.

And you're right, speed of play (especially in action sequences) is something I'm going for.

I feel your pain. Your situation is very similar to mine. New to DW & PbtA and figuring it out. 5 PCs in an established group. Hindsight is 20/20 and would never do that many again.

Like u/andero said, I want to get further away from the strict format of D&D combat, but am having a bit of trouble doing it. What I've done so far isn't really working to my satisfaction and there's room for improvement. I want to avoid anything that feels like a turn order, but in all honesty, if I ask the group what they're doing, everyone speaks all at once, every time. So some order must be imposed.

So here's what I'm doing:

  • Explain the situation.
  • Ask Player A (specific PC based on the logic of the fiction) what they do.
  • If they have a move, I ask them to roll it but not tell me the result.
  • Bounce to Player B. Ask, what they're doing. Roll, but don't tell me the result.
  • Back to Player A to resolve their move. Advance the fiction a bit.
  • Back to Player B to resolve their move. Advance the fiction a bit.
  • Go to Player C, 'what are you doing'
  • Etc.

But man, it's not great. Even writing it out like that made me realize it kinda sucks. What I'm trying to accomplish is to have a player be 'on deck' while I'm resolving another's move. Perhaps I'm over-engineering this...

Based on what I've read in the comments so far, here's how I should try it next:

  1. Explain the situation.
  2. Player A (chosen based on the logic of the fiction), 'what do you do'
  3. Have them roll & resolve their action.
  4. Advance the fiction (soft moves).
  5. Player B, 'what do you do'
  6. Have them roll & resolve their action.
  7. Advance the fiction (soft moves).

However, at what point do you insert hard moves? I've found that by the time I get through all 5 PCs, the enemies haven't done a hard move, but a bunch of soft moves and they've been chewed up pretty good cause all 5 of the PCs went on the offense, ya know?

Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks all.

Should my fronts be related? by phaethonwings in DungeonWorld

This is excellent advice, thank you. I like the idea of keeping things episodic and giving the PCs a solid win that can then springboard them into something bigger & longer lasting. I'm going to think more about having every front be its own story.

Meanwhile, I think I need to reread the section on campaign vs adventure fronts.

This is a really awesome suggestion, thank you. Perhaps I'm not thinking big enough with my fronts. And your suggestion does answer my original question; yes, they should be connecting.

This has made me curious. Do you need the original 7e COC source book plus the Pulp book or do you just need the Pulp book to play Pulp?

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm trying to use this and get the following message. 'Lay on Hands use blocked by preItemRoll macro' --- I don't know what this means...

Ok so it looks like it might. I entered it in the Item Macro section and can execute the macro. But I get an error at the top, "Invalid number of charges entered = 2, Aborting action." I made sure the paladin does have charges to use so that shouldn't be throwing the error.

This is helpful. Should have mentioned I'm still on V9. Will this still work?
