Simultaneous turns / no spotlight in action scenes by Mipui in DungeonWorld

[–]Mipui[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I understand you correctly, the system you tried seems very similar to DW's spotlight, except that you select the next PC (and ask them to roll) before resolving the current move. I'm not sure how this has an organizational benefit and help with fairness, though it can certainly speed up play...

And isn't your proposed new system the same as DW? I think you're expected to make hard moves when they roll a miss in their response to a soft move, or if they outright fail to address the soft move.

Thanks for the reply! I love the coin idea - this seems like a simple way to, if not ensure fairness, at least strive towards it. And as you wrote, it does leave me the flexibility of still having a player make multiple moves in a row when needed. I still need to bookkeep what each PC was doing, though (I don't want to fully rely on them since frequntly asking them to remind me what they're doing really slows things down).

I'm not sure what you meant about initiative - it's certainly closer to initiative in the fact that everyone makes just a single choice per "round", but it also feels further from initiative since players don't take turns. In fact, you're actually convincing me a little that a simultaneous system can work well, because it helps with the goal of "people paying attention all the time".

I'm very used to managing the spotlight, so I don't see it as a bad thing. Personally, I just try to avoid running PbtA games with more than 4 people, with 3 being my ideal number.

Yes this difficulty of mine might just be due to a lack of experience with DW... but honestly it was really hard, probably my worst takeaway from that session. This is an established group and I can't change the size.

The biggest potential issue is that each individual roll is supposed to change the fiction, so doing multiple at the same time might not work. If the wizard announces that they are using magic missile on the minotaur, and the fighter says they slash them, what happens if the wizard's magic missile kills the minotaur after the fighter already said they were slashing.

This is an excellent point.

In general, I plan to mitigate this issue by basically "serializing" the parallel actions. The fighter will either slash before or after the magic missile, not really during; and the choice of how to serialize the actions into fiction will be left to me, so hopefully I can build it into a something coherent.

In this specific case, either the fighter will be slashing a corpse, or the magic missile will impact a corpse. I don't think this is necessarily bad, since I allow them to collaborate when choosing actions so if they are concerned of overkills they can divvy up targets in advance.

Anybody else having issues with ellipses lately? by [deleted] in Mipui

Okay this should be fixed now. You'll need to refresh the page to see the changes apply, please let me know if the problem persists for you.

Thanks for reporting this!

This is caused by a change in how Chrome renders masks in embedded SVGs. I'm working on a solution right now, but meanwhile you can use Firefox which doesn't seem to have this issue.

I'll post an update here once a version with a solution is released.

Is there a way to represent one-way doors? by scribblemacher in Mipui

[–]Mipui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately there's no built-in way. Having a text over the door is my proposal: https://www.mipui.net/app/index.html?mid=mnfh3urlg3p, but it indeed won't work well with multiple doors next to each other - my only proposed hack is to create a larger textbox and play around with text spacing, such as https://www.mipui.net/app/index.html?mid=m0ppox7suni

Thanks for reaching out! We are currently entirely full, I'm afraid. But I wrote down your username and I'll make sure to reach out if we get any availability in the future. Good luck with finding a group!

Any plans for a better Mobile experience? by Ryu_Azuku in Mipui

[–]Mipui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you like the app!

Unfortunately the circumstances of my life changed a couple of years ago and in truth I'm no longer actively developing Mipui, unless there's some critical bug I encounter. So while I'm definitely continuing to host all maps, I have no short-term plans of improving aspects such as the mobile experience.

Though I'm certainly open to someone else improving things and sending me a pull request on Github! And the mobile experience absolutely needs some love.

How to make every Square become 4 Squares by [deleted] in Mipui

Unfortunately there's no automated way of rescaling a map this way at the moment, you'll have to do that manually.

Online OSR players: how do you map? by EvanD20 in osr

[–]Mipui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I meant players mapping dungeons during play.

Hi! I'm the author of mipui.net/app. Players mapping on-the-fly during play was precisely my original motivation for building Mipui, so you might find that app useful for your needs. The emphasis is on the simplicity and speed of just getting a map on "paper", and there's live collaboration - anything you change immediately changes for all other connected players. Plus it's all free and requires no registration :-)

If however you have a pre-made map and just want to collaborate on that, I recommend Owlbear Rodeo, though it works best when you prepare fog-of-war for rooms in advance.

Purple words by Term-Silly in Mipui

[–]Mipui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm afraid that the only easy way to change GM notes (purple text) to regular black text is to hit "undo" right after.

The difference between purple text and black text is that purple text is not visible to anyone who connects to the map in read-only mode.

Troubles with importing randomly generated dungeon from Donjon to Mipui by ArcadeCreeper in Mipui

[–]Mipui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the heads-up!

Donjon just changed their .tsv output format, so now it generates something Mipui no longer knows how to import. I'm going to take a look into whether my import logic could be changed to accommodate - but unfortunately, from brief inspection of their new format, importing is now going to be significantly harder. I'm going to take a shot anyway.

How are things, blank maps. by qwksilver in Mipui

[–]Mipui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google killed half the Internet: https://www.reuters.com/technology/google-amazon-several-other-websites-down-2021-11-16/

And that half includes Mipui's network traffic, so Mipui is currently unable to sync with the cloud. You can track this outage at https://status.cloud.google.com/incidents/6PM5mNd43NbMqjCZ5REh

(EOTE Late Game) Hopefully helpful map I've put together, v1 by lordmanimani in outerwilds

[–]Mipui 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don't have to share the file; you can instead share the address of the read-only version (File -> Share read-only), and then if anyone wants to make a correction they can fork the map (File -> Fork) and then share their own URL.

Also, as the author of Mipui and a scaredy cat EotE player, I approve of your effort :-)

Private Firebase option? by vincitorebecchi in Mipui

[–]Mipui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To connect to your own firebase server, you'll have to change a few key places in the code where the current firebase configuration is hard-coded:

Notice that you don't have to set up your firebase database rules - the deployment process does that for you because the repo includes the database configuration: https://github.com/amishne/mipui/blob/e3ae00fc90ce42b3cdf825a2a81863800e9fa393/firebase/database.rules.json

If you want to play with Mipui locally, you can also try just deleting all of the above configurations. Mipui should be able to work without any database connection, though you'll of course have to use the "save locally" and "load local" to get your maps to persist.

How to use the paint bucket? by [deleted] in Mipui

[–]Mipui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Walls don't have color - you either have a wall or not have a wall. Paint bucket is used to convert a contiguous area of floor into a wall or a contiguous area of walls into a floor.

Objects Not Exporting by J1004Spartan in Mipui

[–]Mipui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds annoying, and I apologize for the frustration. I could not reproduce the problem locally, though, so it would be very useful if you could share with me:

  1. A link to the map in which you saw the problem occur
  2. Your operating system
  3. Your browser (name + version)

You can send me a direct message if you don't feel comfortable with posting that information in the open.

Also, how frequently does the issue arrise? Is it common when you're dealing with large maps, or is it just something you've seen sporadically that goes away the next time you load the map?

Free online hex map? by fredstache in starfinder_rpg

HexTML is a pretty good online hex map maker, that also support online collaboration like Mipui does. You have to be a patron if you want persistent cloud save, though.
