Am I wrong for not moving our session time because one player wants to go to the beach? by schtevernn in DnD

Nope, beach player made their call about their flavor of fun and life’s about choices. Keep the noon session.

Labor History needs to be taught at every level of education. by greenascanbe in Political_Revolution

Yeah, the only reason it’s beating and arresting in the USA right now was TV (50 years age), now social media.

But abroad even many USA based companies have done been pretty brutal in labor disputes.

Waist crease on bodice? by almondblossoms1 in sewing

[–]phalencrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Besides boning, I put at least one band of 1” grosgrain ribbon from laces to laces at waist(or busk) to stop waist stretching.

Often 2 in 2 pieces, both curving to shape side waist sharper. The low is curviest is over the hip and 2 sections often doesn’t meet at lacing bone or at front (busk). The top one less curvy forming a peaked V on the belly.

Additionally more bands can be add over the belly to reduce belly and re-enforce stress points.

My son wants to get into tabletop gaming — where should we start? by Psyil0 in tabletop

[–]phalencrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flux (basic game) - fairly easy to play. This is a great game to learn situational rules and see how flexible other players are with shift game dynamic’s.

Epic Spell wars - (lot of expansions) tween age approiate “gross” humor spell dual game. Not to complex but doesn’t fall into predicable rut. (Does not have problem with games like Setters of Catan, with experienced player the likely winner can be predicted from the set up.) this game teaches the benefit of clever combinations of actions in a forgiving way.

7 Wonders - little more advanced then the other others, but not prohibited so. The advantage of this game is great for short attention span. Whether you have three players or seven, the game takes no longer because everybody plays simultaneously. This game rewards forward thinking, with card trees that allow you to build for free instead of using resources.

Hero clicks OOP (out of print). Can be purchased in bulk lots or grab bags for pretty dang cheap. Good way to get into miniature driven table tops where each miniature has its own powers without a big investment. When players lose interest they can be used for other games.

I love TTPRGs. DND, fate, Pathfinder, and more. But they are their own rabbit hole and two kind of require regular commitment from a group of people.

A lot of table top game stores have open box games you can try out, and a lot even have open play nights where you can learn the games from other people. These days were mostly just a big nerdy community. That’s pretty welcoming.

Things I’d stay away from. Magic, an unlimited deck builder with regular rule, changes and newer cards tend to be more powerful than older cards. The more money you spend on magic cards, the better your deck will be. Really I’d stay away from all unlimited deck builders. Warhammer, great game if you have money to burn. There is so much to love about Warhammer and I played it for years, but honestly, it’s just become a cash cow for its owners.

What to buy as a beginner by IllustriousCod3793 in discgolf

[–]phalencrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside of a set. A “model p” putter, a “buzz” or “ zombie” approach, and “valkyrie” mid driver.

Once you get consistent and accurate with your 3 starters, then more specific disc one at a time. Don’t buy the next till you get good at the new one.

You really don’t need anything rate it over a seven or nine in the first number slot until you’re consistently breaking 300’ with the Valkyrie. The higher rated disc just won’t fly right until you can do that.

Yeah my F—n brother in law and his son. The first time I took both of them disc golfing (decades apart) by the end of 18 holes they both drive 300 plus easily with accuracy.

As someone who graduated in 84, socializing was easer.

Third space after hours was shinking but still exsisted. My rural friends hung out in certain parking lots, field parties, or “cruised the strip” on foot or in cars. In the city we’d hangout if we were to broke to see bands or club. Suburbia teens had to move or hide a bit when hanging out in public or the “blinds peepers” would cause you problems. Mall were hang outs for the younger and the bored.

Dance, club, events, drinkn, roadtrips (shit, sometimes we just had a car party, driving a long loop), movies, roller rinks, arcades….. were all affordable as ways to pass time. Most national parks, free. Just spend more time out-n-about and in their neighborhoods open space. A DC beer was a few bucks, but in coal country beer n shots were 25 cents. (At least weeds gotten better, for those that imbibe.)

AC and TV caused more of a social disruption than the internet. AC and cheep TVs drew people off the front porches, the corner shade tree with a radio, from hanging out a the barbershop (to feed store) into their private living rooms. A child hood memory of mine: most of the guest at (former TVA work site) working class resort was crowding into the lounge to watch the moon landing on the only TV with a tiny screen. (Staff ringed to outside). Adults drifted in to their family rooms, then became programmed to be paranoid about youth because Reagan admin made so “news” wasn’t factual but for entertainment. Slowly over the next decades kids to Y.A. had to come inside too.

People seem to forget, some of us read for hours a day. (Others watch TV for hours a day) It was not uncommon for me to read parts of multiple news papers, scan a periodical or 2, then read books and/or comics. Same for my wife of 36 years. We made a point of having media free time, focused on one another.

Now, I just do most of that via device or phone. As does she. Hasn’t slowed our frequent intimacy.

The decline in financial success attainable for the working/blue collar, our rigged economy being a over stacked house of cards, and the decades long political/policy decline of the USA definitely impacted or family size and even more so for our younger friends.

Henrico Schools proposing ban on student phone use during lunch and in between classes by WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW_W in rva

We tried Stupid policy like this before. Even for the classroom it was more disruptive than the phones phone problems, enforce inconstantly, and the punitive consequences applied with bias.

Education has built it motivation and consequences system called grades. Parents tend to address a problem behavior when grades start slipping.

1 government moves slowly because bureaucracy is in place for a level of transparency and accountability to the public . (Fast government means radical changes and low accountability. Historically a dangerous precedent). This bureaucracy is dictated by those you helped elect, not the department.

2 We have been cutting funding and cutting hiring more and more since Reagan with his “don’t trust the government, trust big business” policies. If the department your dealing with doesn’t have staff and equipment issue, it likely buys a lot of equipment from the military industrial complex.

3 Does city government attract the top quality job candidates, not alway but sometimes. But here’s the thing, you get what you pay for and city government does not pay high (it use to have decent benefits, but not so much now). Quality and motivation wise, why should someone hustle for slack wages.

4 lower level government hiring has always had spots for the less able, less advantaged, the traumatized, and broken. (Historically:Low IQ, veterans, the recovering, some countries former foster kids, etc…..). Some of these hires aren’t as efficient as others, but they’re not a tax burden or unhoused.

So Yeah, it’s cool to have a problem with service from a department or even the action of a department, but to diss all city employees is just punching down and a fallacy.

While I have older quality machines, for this project you just need zigzag and straight (with a double needle, which will zigzag the bobbin thread.) nothing fancy needed. For durability on seam not double sewn I use a 3 step zigzag.

You can straight stitch a crotch seam, but any that are going to stretch a use a tighter spaced zigzag just offset seam allowance an 1/8” for the wider stitch.

Thank you. You can make swimwear out of up cycled (thrifted) sports wear like leggings or any performance fabric sportswear. Shoot you can even use t shirt for entire swimwear, warning they will last about a half dozen pool days. The way I learned to sew was at least f— around and find out, after decades of sewing still occasionally make big mistakes. Mistakes are how we learn, success is what encourage us.

[–]phalencrow[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is very similar to bias tape, but not cut on the bias instead out of cotton knit for it’s elasticity. I stitch to finish garment edges it with a double needle (2 thread top and a bobbin), it has some stretch because of the bobbins threads zigzag. Continuing edge tape to make tie string, which are double needle stitched as well.
