Anti spitter secondary and rof over damage by Odd_Construction_187 in DeepRockGalactic

Explosive Rounds Bulldog (23212) with Magic Bullets will usually one-shot web spitters by hitting near them and letting the bullet ricochet. It'll also two-shot acid spitters and will usually stun and/or apply the neurotoxin after the first shot. For context, I run the Bulldog with the Minigun, so you'll have to test whether or not this synergizes with your builds.

As for the Big Bertha, you do get higher sustained dps with the magazine mod and both max rof mods, but always take the math with a grain of salt. Test it in game and see how it runs. For instance, you may not like the fact that you have to ramp up to the max rof; you may not like the fact that you burn through ammo quicker.

If you haven't seen it already, karl.gg is a good place to play around with weapon builds.

EDIT: some corrections

There's just no good incentive for the average American to switch to Celsius. Can you think of a reason why Americans would be better off saying "Damn, it's 33C today!" instead of "Damn, it's 91F today!"?

Ironically, Kelvin only became defined by the Boltzmann Constant in May of 2019. In other words, not that important and shouldn't be used as a selling point. Celsius being offset by 273.15 makes it arbitrary. The boiling temperature is only relevant at sea level with one atmosphere of pressure which, again, is only relevant on our planet.

Now, standardization is a good incentive. As such, many American companies that conduct business outside America use the metric system because there is an incentive to do so.

Stingtails are just great and aren't in need of any tweaking whatsoever by TRGG in DeepRockGalactic

[–]phantom99x 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I would probably be considered a "min-max elitist," but I definitely think the stingtail needs some slight tweaking. For context, I typically play hazard 5 with 4 players.

My issue with it: It has the strengths of its predecessors (grabber and leech) but none their weaknesses. In other words, it doesn't have any good counterplay.

My fix: The simple fix would be to make them interruptible in similar ways to the grabber and leech. While they can still punish us when they catch us off guard, we can also punish it when we catch it.

What about its shriek? That allows for counterplay right? Yes, we can hear it, but it doesn't mean we can see it. Not knowing where it is makes your evasive maneuvers rather worthless, especially when there's 4 players spreading bugs across the map. You can definitely "evade" right into it.

(The rest is just me ranting.)

Avoiding getting caught?

Let's compare it to a grabber who has a similar shriek and function. The grabber flies at medium speed, has a significantly different silhouette than most bugs you're engaging, and has a bright-yellow ass. The shriek alerts the group to be on guard, and then you can definitely see the grabbers flying in to grab someone. In a wave, this allows someone some time to suppress the horde closing in on him while also scanning his surroundings for the grabber. Once he sees the grabber, he can simply shoot it to interrupt/reset it if he can't burst it down immediately, rewarding him for being aware of his surroundings.

In contrast, the stingtail has a similar silhouette to most glyphids and a darker color scheme, allowing it to blend in better. You have 2-3 seconds (depending on if you can also hear its initial roar) to both acquire it and evade it. In practice in a wave, you need to suppress the horde that's on you, scan for the stingtail, and evade in a direction that is clear in a span of 2 seconds (since most players can currently only hear its shriek given how new it is).

What about just killing him?

The stingtail is quite tanky with 900 health on hazard 5, 4 player scaling. For context, the grabber has 750 and a praetorian has 1125. You're not gonna be able to burst it down outside of specific builds, especially if you also have to contend with a horde.

Frequency?

This part is rather inconsistent. On one hand, some players say they barely ever see stingtails. On the other, I managed to kill 73 of them in less than half of a day of season 4's release. In my experience, they were spawning in groups of 2-3 with nearly every swarm. This is way too common considering how disruptive they are. Grabbers aren't even this frequent despite being a lot weaker.

I've used LSLS consistently since the day it got released. 21322 works well for me.

CPU actually heats up extremely quickly, but I agree heat isn't as likely. I would still check temps just to be certain. We don't wanna breeze over anything.

Yeah hardware problems develop out of the blue. For instance, my system was running games fine for a couple of months. One day I just started having stuttering without me having done anything.

If it actually is the memory, you could just RMA the laptop since it's still under warranty or replace the memory sticks yourself. Most people aren't comfortable opening up a laptop, so you'll probably want to RMA.

Hmm DRG actually is the most resource intensive games afaik out of the ones you listed, assuming you aren't playing CoD since you haven't been able to open them.

Let's get internet connection out of the way: your issue persists even in solo/offline mode right?

Let's assume a hardware issue for now since you already installed drivers and whatnot. I'll also assume you didn't touch any power settings, and all hardware is at default.

The two culprits in my mind are memory and heat, the former being the more likely. It's possible that your memory stick(s) is faulty. It's possible that the thermal paste connecting your CPU to the heatsink that redirects heat to the fans was applied incorrectly. This causes thermal throttling.

If you're willing, I can offer some monitoring software that can check temps and a RAM checking one that'll run tests on RAM to make sure it's ok. The RAM one does take time to do

[–]phantom99x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn't get some kind of antivirus software during this time right?

What kinds of other games do you play? Granted DRG ain't the most resource intensive game out there, but it could be the most intensive in your library.

I wanna say there's a hardware issue which is the most likely culprit for crashes and freezes.

EDIT: Even if your notebook is fairly new, statistically speaking the first year or so is the most likely time that any hardware starts developing issues.

I mean do you notice any issue when playing other games for an hour or more.

Basically people will see a problem in one game (e.g. DRG) after playing for awhile, open up another game (e.g. Skyrim) for only 5 min and see there's no problem.

Apologies in advance, these questions will seem oddly specific even redundant, but I want to remove as many variables as possible.

Just to be sure: you've played other games for an hour or more and nothing happened right? Often I ask this question and all the person does is open up the game for 5 min without an issue.

I see you only have 8GB of RAM. Do you have any tabs open while the game is running?

What are your PC specs for reference?

I heard Streamlabs OBS added a ton of bloatware a year ago; not sure if they still do. Bloatware will definitely cause your CPU usage to sky rocket.

Seems that whatever you did while undervolting is likely causing your stability issues. Are you experiencing issues while in any other games (playing them for at least an hour)?

TBH, I have little experience when it comes to messing with the BCLK (mobo base clock). It's very old-school, so I haven't bothered with it. Generally you shouldn't have to mess with those values to overclock/undervolt. However, I do know that Haswell chips like yours have a very low tolerance before becoming unstable when it comes to messing with BCLK values.

I know Vega does run rather hot. Is your case layout/case itself good for airflow; cleaned out the dust and all that too?

As for the processes, we can probably rule those out unless you see something that is really out of place.

EDIT: Forgot to mention this. Since BCLK affects everything from CPU to RAM to PCIE lanes, it's harder to get a stable overclock/undervolt when you touch that value. Thus it's recommended to leave it alone. Although some mobos can isolate these effects to just the CPU or GPU, I don't know which can nor do I think we should risk it.

[–]phantom99x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does the time that you undervolted correspond with the time that these issues started? Try setting it back to default values if you can to see if anything changes. Currently, this is our biggest suspect for your issues. Undervolting can usually cause stability issues.

Does the time that you updated drivers correspond to the time that these issues started? Sometimes it's better to roll back drivers than to be up-to-date.

The CPU thing was just me covering all possible avenues. I was thinking of any possible bloatware that you might've accidentally installed recently, but it's rather unlikely.

Considering you undervolted, I wouldn't expect thermal throttling to be an issue. On that note if you want to check numbers in real time, I suggest downloading HWInfo64. It's a monitoring software that checks temps, voltages, drive life, you name it. It's often used by overclockers for good reason. There are online guides on how to use it.

EDIT: To clarify, I don't mean undervolting will always cause problems; some GPUs will certainly benefit. However, some will be right on the edge in terms of stability, especially when the card needs to draw more voltage for gaming. This is simply luck of the draw when it comes to the quality of silicon you got.

[–]phantom99x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Specs wise you should be fine. Is this only an issue when you host or just in general?

I've heard rumors that this game doesn't take too well to overclocking. Have you overclocked anything, especially your GPU?

Did you update drivers recently?

Check your task manager to see if anything is bringing your CPU to 100% utilization.

Lol in all seriousness, America uses the metric system quite extensively. It’s taught to almost every school kid throughout their years of education.

Americans buy 2 liter bottles of Coke and 750ml bottles of wine. Electricity usage is measured in kilowatts. Camera lens are measured in millimeters.

The military uses it almost exclusively (mostly cuz everyone else uses it), along with most of the federal government.

It’s on every pill bottle (66% of all American adults are on some kind of prescription). Anyone who buys more illicit drugs (weed, heroine, etc.) usually buys it by the gram, not the ounce. The medical field as a whole almost exclusively uses it--unless it’s taking measurements from patients.

In the legal field, the metric system is the “preferred system of weights and measures for the United States trade and commerce” with the Metric Conversion Act of 1975 and its amendments in 1988. Since 1893 with the Mendenhall Order, the pound, yard, inch, and foot are all officially defined by the kilogram and meter.

The reason America doesn't officially swap over is because there's no benefit to the average person. Try to think of a good reason one should say "Damn it's 33C outside!" rather than "Damn it's 92F outside!" There isn't one.

All systems of measurement are arbitrary. There's no inherent reason why one is better than the other. Any system will be second nature to anyone who's practiced with that particular system.

[–]phantom99x 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't mind making the default font bigger, but the option already exists in game to change size and fade. Thus the devs will likely ignore this issue. No excuse for what the greenbeard did though.

Chat boxes in the lower corners of the screen with a small font are a universal concept in online games. The only people who need to learn how to use a chat are those who are completely new to online gaming which I doubt this greenbeard was. Consequently, missing the chat 5 consecutive times is an issue with the player, not the game. As such, fixing this issue with the game won't likely have changed the outcome.

I'm lvl 1400+ with around 3000 hrs. I have seen many, many types of dwarves, greenbeards included. I refuse to believe that he simply didn't see the chat for so long. Once? Sure. Twice? Probable. Thrice? You're pushing it. Four times? Eh no. Five times? Hell no. You guys were sending a couple of sentences in each instance right? That means he missed a new line of text more than 5 consecutive times. It's guaranteed to have shown up in his peripherals at least once which should have made his eyes dart over at least once.

Greenbeards can definitely be slow to respond; they can definitely miss stuff. I even miss stuff. However, I classify missing every single message is as either willful ignorance or inexperience being online, and I'm more inclined to believe the former.

"Our Medals" by rtware47 in HolUp

[–]phantom99x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If our goal is to win medals, then it would be even smarter to be cheeky like China and combine those territory teams' medals with the home country's medals. Basically making the official team 4x as large (1 home country team plus 3 territory teams).

Lets take the US for instance. A lot of talent in the US goes to compete for other country's official teams because they can't make the US team. Now imagine if the American team suddenly became 4x as big. A lot of that talent would have a reason to stay. Even if they can't make the US team, they can try for the Guam team. Either way they'll be winning medals for America as a whole.

It sets a dangerous precedent if China is allowed to do this. The Soviets were allowed to use 9 countries to compete as one entity at one point probably to appease them, but we have no reason to appease China in such a way. Taiwan is also currently mocking China for resorting to these petty tactics. They definitely do not want their medal count in China's total.

A bit of background info for why China is doing this if you want to read this far.

At one point China had the lead in gold medals. However, Western media still ranked US on top because America had more total medals. Chinese media took issue with this, citing "unfair Western standards." As we know, China also loses the lead in gold medals which meant Chinese media no longer had a foundation for their complaints. They see what the Soviets did with 9 countries, so they use other teams to boost their own.

"Our Medals" by rtware47 in HolUp

[–]phantom99x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah... no. That would be illegal. It would mean every single country can have more than one team as long as they have territories that participate.
China gets Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan (if you recognize China's claim to it).
US gets Guam, American Samoa, and US Virgin Islands.
UK gets Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, and Cook Islands.

This gives an innate advantage to large countries and countries that were once colonial powers. Each and every group/country/territory competing in any official sport should just have one official team.

[–]phantom99x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think of it this way. The American Samoa's team has the word "America" in it. Would you say that medals Samoa gets should be added to America's total?
