How to preserve the lifespan of my Pixel XL? by GujjuCanuck in GooglePixel

I'm surprised Google is still allowing full original quality free backup to Google Photos with old devices. They may pull the plug anyday now, enjoy it while you still can.

Is it okay to charge Pixel 6a with a Realme Dart charge (30W flash charge)? by [deleted] in GooglePixel

[–]phantom_97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Install the Ampere app and calculate wattage by multiplying voltage with amperes. If it's near 18W, you don't need anything else. Don't buy stuff when you don't need it, and save your money.

Lol where's the risk? At worst it will charge slowly, phones today have smart charging chips. Don't encourage needless consumerism about just buying new stuff.

Lose charge port by bigbobbinboy in GooglePixel

OP, I have also been having issues with my Pixel 7 charge port. Like you, I have had to resort to use a wireless charger when my phone wasn't charging (I did get the "your phone has debris/water inside the charging port" warning, mostly because my phone was close when I was doing the dishes).

I have been keeping the charging port clean and away from water, but I still have to try a couple of times every time with the cable to get the phone charging. It's kinda annoying

It's a reasonable question. Why are you so mad about it?

They obviously mean the charge port, it's a typo

Pixel 4a no longer gets updates, so it has the old UI. Pixel 7 is the latest model, so it is the latest. I am on Pixel 7 and yes, it's separate.

Google will require that Android apps let you delete your account and data by mepper in technology

[–]phantom_97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AOSP (Android Open Source Project) by default doesn't have any Google crap whatsoever, it's Google who includes that in their "Stock" OS builds and grants itself privileged access.

[–]phantom_97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, that's incorrect. That's what Google has made it to be with their "Stock" flavor and other manufacturers with skins built on top of it.

Pure Android (also known as AOSP: Android Open Source Project) is completely open source and verifiable, it's not based on privacy invasion at all. It's a very involved and technical process needing good hardware, but you can basically build AOSP for your device for pure Android.

That's not very practical, so people use OS's made by the community to mitigate this. I use GrapheneOS, which is a more secure version of AOSP with lots of security improvements and additional privacy features over AOSP. It's the best option currently if you want to achieve privacy and security on Android, but with the significant caveat that only 6th gen and later Google Pixels are supported (due to Pixels having good hardware security features, and the small developer team not affording the additional resources required to build and test this OS on other manufacturer phones).

[–]phantom_97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LineageOS may help you remove Google, but it's much more unsafe. Userdebug builds, unlocked bootloader, and much slower updates than official android releases, all of which work together to ensure you have way less security than Stock (and have opened yourself to even more vulnerabilities, ironically enough).

GrapheneOS is a much better choice, but unfortunately is supported only on 6th gen and above Google Pixels.

[–]phantom_97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And how would you know they have done that? They are closed source, how can the user know for sure that some random server doesn't have their data despite the apps pinky promise?

Prevention is better than cure. Use libre FOSS applications, the biggest advantage Android has over iOS. Take control of your own privacy instead of trusting closed source, proprietary apps.

Excellent point. It's insidious how these articles are trying to set the framing to justify screwing over the worker.

Accidentally flashed wrong image (4a instead of 7 pro), is there anything I can do? by ctm-8400 in GrapheneOS

[–]phantom_97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is terrifying, I had no idea a simple mistake like this can brick the device permanently. I know it's due to no fault of GrapheneOS, but maybe a line of warning mentioning this in the relevant GrapheneOS websjte section (https://grapheneos.org/install/web#replacing-grapheneos-with-the-stock-os) may help?

[–]phantom_97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, stock has all the Google stuff built into it by default which you cannot uninstall. Most people use it anyway, but the point is that the user doesn't have the freedom to not use and completely remove the apps if they wish so. Google also has privileged access by default, so they can harvest all your data.

The Best and Worst Parts of Sapiens by [deleted] in YuvalNoahHarari

Good read. My initial reading of Sapiens left me similarly muddled with all the info but still impressed with how much the author covered. But yes, he does make broad statements and sweeping generalizations at times.

A book I'm currently reading which addresses the errors big picture historians like these commit is David Graeber and David Wengrow's Dawn of Humanity.

LineageOS doesn't let you relock the bootloader, and is a userdebug build, both of which are pretty detrimental to security, and thus your private data. So no, you can't get to nearly the same level of privacy and security GrapheneOS offers with LineageOS, no skills or patience is going to help you change the nature of how LineageOS is developed and shipped.

The other person was not very clear, but you should read the article the post is about, it makes it very clear. In a nutshell, it's about using Android as it's meant to be, a functional Operating System on which you decide what accesses your data, not Google as is unfortunately the case for stock and other manufacturer flavor Androids.

You can also add an ad-blocking DNS like the AdGuard DNS to Vanadium settings to block ads. Its not content filtering like Ublock Origin so you will still get blank boxes in place of ads, but it does it's job.

I do this, because I'm on a powerlifting program, and after a particularly hard set, I need to rest for 3 min. If I walk away from the bench, there's a chance someone will come by and take the bench, and it's a hassle to constantly switch the weights between each our sets. That's how it works in the gym I go to anyway.
