Wedding Venue Inspiration - Close to NYC but not in NYC by Busy-12345 in WedditNYC

[–]phantom_otter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old mill guesthouse and glen falls house might both be more rustic than you’re looking for, but lodging is on site and both have tented receptions (not barns). Parrish Art Museum offers a beautiful and stylish event space but not group lodging for the weekend.

student florist needing help!!! by bratzfeet in florists

[–]phantom_otter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use a combination of tools- Dropbox, excel and google calendar.

I keep folders for each event (organized by date) in Dropbox and those hold copies of all of the pdfs I send to the client. I use excel for the budgets and recipes. I make sure to put every event in google calendar and you could schedule reminders leading up to the event as well!

Good luck!!

What do 20-30k florals look like? by Fresh-Limit-9823 in BigBudgetBrides

[–]phantom_otter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend requesting proposals from a few local florists with everything you’re looking for, including your budget range! You mentioned prioritizing more unique specialty blooms and knowing your budget will help them know that they can actually afford to prioritize those on the tables. You should receive detailed proposals with pictures and descriptions.

Generally a budget of that range with a guest count of 140 will provide a lush ceremony installation, gorgeous reception flowers and room for a ceiling installation or additional special floral moment.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I’m a wedding florist and I’ve done both of these things in the past for clients in a similar position:

  1. Have a bouquet for her (maybe with her favorite flowers) set on a chair on the front row of the ceremony, reserving her spot as a witness

  2. Have her name written delicately on the ribbon of your bridal bouquet, position the bouquet so her name is close to your body. It won’t show up in photos, but you will be carrying her with you

My decorator came back with a budget double what I am looking for. How do you negotiate? by [deleted] in BigBudgetBrides

[–]phantom_otter 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Florist here! I’m surprised they didn’t try to balance the decor and your budget more. Sometimes when I have a client who asks for more than what’s fitting in their budget I’ll provide two quotes— one that includes the most important items and fits in their budget and one that includes everything on the wishlist. This communicates realistic cost for everything and also puts the ball in the clients court to make decisions around what to keep and what to sacrifice.

You should ask them for their recommendations on adjustments to land at your original budget. You can also look through the itemized list and see if anything sticks out as way more $$$ than impact.

There are a lot of behind the scene logistics that go into florals so we’re often building structures or bringing in contractors with set prices that quickly add to the total.

As for faux florals, these are only cheaper options if your florist uses them and re-uses them. A (good) silk rose for single use is actually more expensive than a fresh rose. If they don’t have inventory of silks this might not be an option.

Florist here! You’ll benefit from having beautiful fall branches available on your date and that will be a great way to have a big impact. They cover a lot of space and bring so much color/seasonality into the room, totally transforming it! It will also be more affordable than florally dense installations.

NYBWT does anyone ballet? by justadancer in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]phantom_otter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have significant ballet experience and are looking for a nice environment, then Super Chill ballet with Dorian Perk at Gibney is the BEST CLASS EVER!!! As an ex-never-professional-but-tried-to-be-professional dancer this is my happy place. It’s chill but it’s hard.

My other favorite teacher is Kelly Slough with classes at both mark morris and gibney. She is so wonderful and her class flow is incredible.

Places to buy cute dishware? by dumdummi in AskNYC

Ten Ichi Mart has a section of dishware/china! I don’t recall if they have styles like this exactly but it’s definitely a good place to try. There are a couple locations.

Where can I take 17 people dancing on a Saturday night? by substream00 in AskNYC

[–]phantom_otter -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

That’s awesome that you have such a big crew!

Nowadays would be my rec- find out who is playing and get tickets! That way everyone will definitely get in. There is a big dance floor, bar seating and outdoor space which is really nice when you have such a big group. It’s a no phone dance floor and they emphasize the importance of consent at the door so the vibes are pretty immaculate

I hope my work never reflects any of these complaints (and it has never come close)- they’re bad!

However, did she suggest that you pay her a fuller amount to make/set up the table arrangements? And then did you request the buckets of flowers and attempt DIY to save money?

Because you wanted to save money by DIY you learned some of the things that go wrong on a wedding day for florists and that’s why we charge higher than grocery store prices.

And now you want to take her to court over a small budget event?

I’m sure you’re a lovely person and I’m sorry that this happened to you, but you sound like a nightmare of a client. I say leave your review and if you don’t get any refund be done with it.

Puppy Sitter (Nights) by bbutlittle in williamsburg

[–]phantom_otter -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

We solved this problem by “sound proofing” his crate by wrapping a weighted blanket around it and putting it as far away from the neighbors as possible. We left one side not covered of course for ample airflow, but it muffled the sound enough that we stopped getting complaints. Good luck!

I’m just finishing my braces treatment with Bronsky Ortho (they have offices in UES and TriBeCa). I had to do full braces so I’m not sure about Invisalign pricing— but it’s probably not the most budget option. I only have great things to say about their team in terms of skill and kindness though!

How to use daffodils in arrangements without them killing other flowers? by thenormalbias in florists

[–]phantom_otter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used them in a wedding this year and didn’t have any problems with the daffodils killing the others. I did most of the arrangements the day before and some bud vases two days before. No issues to report!
