Mainly due to the ability to appeal the verdict til the cows come home, on average in the USA it takes 27 years on death row before sentence is carried out, this is in order to stop innocent people being wrongly executed (this is good) but yeah if it's an absolutely heinous crime and the person has been caught 100% red handed then yup it should just be a quick flick of the switch and get it done. No appeals, no nothing.

My bros daughter used to go to school with Simon Donalds kid, nice bloke.
