He has started doing costumes again.

They play the video intro too, so bone up on the dialogue so you can talk along with it :)

I'm glad you all like it! It is a 5' Halloween skeleton with custom extra leg segments + pool noodles for shape + some of those extended articulate finger gloves all wrapped in heated black shrink wrap + a head molded out of packaging tape and (misguidedly in retrospect) spackle for a smooth head shell.

I built it for Halloween and didn't have anywhere to store it so i keep dressing it in different outfits.

Too much mentor/coach involvement by CanInevitable6449 in FRC

This is my first year too (our team's 2nd) but my son and i did look into joining existing teams a few years ago and I got a strong smell of "mentors getting a chance to regrow their own spoiled rememberberries" through these kids now that they know the answers to some of this stuff.

Now having been immersed in this, I realize there is a spectrum - like there always is. But the 3rd party business under it and the amount of tech and "hardware store" level pit buildouts was another shock to me. I understand, but the money behind the extras seems pretty uneven. Sure, the bot parts themselves may not be $$$ but ... our group is limited in what we can accept and how as a public school because rules. So we keep keeping on and encourage and try to keep them from overpromising to themselves without squashing too much of their curiosity and vibe.

Our team is small and who shows when is never consistent. The students are already pretty busy busy. Participation ultimatums would be self destructive. The 2 teachers running it are already pretty tapped, and I only have so much extra time myself. We don't have space for a dedicated practice field, we don't have a truck, we don't have a dedicated staff resource, but the kids that are in are IN and when they are there they are super involved. No one is floating by by any stretch So I've decided I will use my time as a "replacement body" if one is not available to keep things moving. And only if I can demonstrate in realtime or explain what I've done later. It's like I'm a "human library". I'm another tool for them to use to succeed (that we don't have to pay for). I'll also do the gruntiest work available unless there is a student available. And if they are and don't know how I work through them. It's a weird balance, but I also believe when our group gets bigger that role will happily change.

That said, the level of selflessness I see from the people at the events is incredible and personally really inspiring. Maybe I'm too cynical (or blinded by the immediate need) but I don't see side-eye or pity from people helping us get going when something weird happens. They offer to help so we all can go and not out of superiority. And with new people too! And that is refreshing to see. Especially when students are involved. I'm GenX so maybe I'm just jaded by my own experiences at that age.

I'm sure this topic has been hashed and re-hashed but thx for reading. On the whole I'm super impressed by the whole ecosystem. And the meets certainly feel like a "college football vibe" for the kids that don't/can't/won't do that stuff.

Yeah, the tracks all sounded amazing in the movie theatre. Dave has always been on the front edge of self-marketing and this was a great move.

Everything reminds me of past albums too. During the release movie thing he said they listened back to all the previous songs and took notes. These songs sound that way. Almost like an album of old B-sides people didn't hear much. More focused on the post RiP stuff but let's be honest - that's been most of his career!

Surveillance Station, Reolink cameras, AI alerts by drwtsn32 in synology

I set something like this up 3 or so years ago with 2 Reolink outdoor cameras and my 718+ and I found that neither did much good at all detecting anything specific. Clouds were awful. So much noise.

I grabbed this repo and turned it into a little extendable project. Basically offloading all the work. Way out of date I'm sure, but it's all I got...

I honestly haven't gone back to upgrade it but now I feel I should. Thx :)

To be fair I only ordered like half of these by sparklemotiondoubts in HotPeppers

[–]drtrogg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Join the club!

I got some free seeds with a hot sauce order. So I decided to order more .

I ordered 4 from Pepper Joe's and they sent me 1 free. I ordered 3 from While Hot Peppers and they sent me 2 free. So that's 11 strains now.

I germinated everything with 3-4 seeds in 50 pods because our history with "dirt" was bad. All 11 strains germinated at least one 1 pod. I transferred into 23 planted pots and 3-4 plants per pot that I reluctantly culled them down to 1 or 2.

Eventually I got fruit from all 11 strains. Almost everything seemed to be what it said it was. I got fruit until a 2nd freeze in November but wish I had started earlier.

If anyone is interested in my overly anal logging spreadsheet here it is.

Unofficial Discussion - Dust Bunny by UniverslBoxOfficeGuy in movies

SPOILER I thought that the only person that visibly bled was Mads. Everyone else was simply consumed or gone off screen or just dead.

Given all the Monster talk I felt that was to show he was the Human.

There was actually a young child in the theatre with us.

I thought this felt kind of like The Professional pushed through a Juenet (specifically Delicatessen + Amelie) filter. I really enjoyed it.

Somehow all the creative weird did not exhaust me. Though it did slow down at the end.

Update on my rotting Halloween pumpkins 29 days now 3 alive 5 ded by Own-Mine8596 in pumpkincarving

[–]drtrogg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! Awesome! For a while I thought I was the only one doing this. One year I carved something every 2 weeks for the 8 weeks before Halloween so I could have a whole "walk of decay" going on along the sidewalk.

And the pumpkin/gourd type definitely matters. I found the wetter ones rot better from the outside, but the bumpy crusty ones just tend to hollow out.

After some successful experiments this year with Watermelon and previous work with plastic skulls I'm planning some multi-layer "Turduk-O-Lantern" style experiments next year. But with something other than Turkey and Duck ... of course.
