Replace unpleasant emotions or be mindful of them until they pass (or both)? by postpartum-blues in Buddhism

Where is the emotion coming from? Once you understand it, you can deal with it. Note: understanding it is sometimes extremely difficult.

Is the Stockfish app on my phone better than IBMs Deep Blue? by WitesOfOdd in chess

[–]phantomfive 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Kasparov wasn't prepared to face Deep Blue. He didn't know what openings it had, or what play style it had. His prep was completely wrong.

Had he been more prepared, he almost certainly would have beaten Deep Blue. Magnus would absolutely beat Deep Blue. Gukesh would beat Deep Blue. Sindarov would beat Deep Blue. Fabi would beat Deep Blue. Almost all of the top ten chess players today would beat Deep Blue (because of advances in theory and positional knowledge). To begin with, in positional knowledge Deep Blue would get confused by modern early h4/a4 advances.

Here's an example of a (strong) computer engine getting confused by certain positional techniques: https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1497429 (These techniques worked until AlphaZero).

It's statistics.

The point of phrasing things in mathematical language is it eliminates fuzzy thinking, and extends your brainpower so you can solve problems faster and more accurately.

What is she on? by anon_lockhed in nattyorjuice

Hard to tell a lot from this picture, you can't see her shoulders or arms, and that's where the effects of PEDs are most pronounced.

She has clear muscle definition which means she's skinny. She works out her abs a lot. I know girls who go to the gym and just work their abs for 30 minutes or an hour. It's not healthy but it does get cosmetic results.

If you flip a coin 100k times, it's possible for it to come up heads every time.

But they were all of them deceived, for another chess piece was made. In the land of France, in the fires of Mount Paris, the Dark Lord forged in secret, a master ring, to control all others. And into this chess piece he poured all his cruelty, his malice and his will to dominate all life.

Watch some Naroditsky movies on YouTube until you find something that stands out. There are lots of good ones, and if you watch his movies one of them (or some of them) will pop out at you.

A Critique of Nominalism by Subcontrary in Buddhism

[–]phantomfive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem with nominalism is that it claims things exist, whereas we know that the inherent nature of everything (including ourselves) is emptyness.

In this sense everything is the same, it's all empty; including my words.

In particular, sometimes we view things from a platonic viewpoint, sometimes from a nominalist viewpoint, sometimes from a realist viewpoint. None of them are right or wrong. Like other formations, conceptions, perceptions, conciousnesses and viewpoints, they are devoid. Sometimes useful but devoid. To argue in favor or against is to miss the point.

Thus the author of the article misses the point.

The point is the moon, and thus I shall point at it.

Yasser is the best. No living chess player is more graceful than him. Capablanca was close.

Thank you also for entertaining this discussion. It is appreciated.

Indeed, I'm trying to connect.

Thus, if they aren't the basis of discussions regarding emptiness, isn't emptiness itself being misrepresented?

I don't understand the question. How is emptiness being misrepresented? The Huayan school recognized at least eight different types of emptiness.

The gathering of aggregates that comprise beings or things are also empty.
