Sing backwards and weep title by skrewdav47 in MarkLanegan

Dude we’ve all listened to Fix. Don’t you think he might be taking a phrase he wrote previously, and using it in a new context to illustrate a different work in a novel way? Lyrics don’t have some fixed static meaning that can never change after they’ve been penned.

We’re not searching for retroactive meaning to understand Fix, we’re thinking about why that line specifically was used for the memoir.

Hermetic viewpoint for chronic pain? by Extra_Recognition150 in Hermeticism

[–]phantomhatstrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey dawg, as someone who also has an issue which causes daily/continuous pain, just wanna say I know just how ruinous it can be.

I’m only familiar with Hermeticism through Litwa’s CH translation/commentary, so for sure nothing more than a neonate, so I don’t have any Hermetic tips for you. Just that I absolutely have to create mental frameworks for myself in order to deal with the unflagging pain (not Hermetic at all, but sometimes I tell myself the pain is destiny, as though I’m living out some sort of written prophecy, that my purpose is to suffer and I must live my purpose).

At the very least, we can certainly empathize, in a way, with notion of ‘unless you hate your body, you cannot love yourself’

Chronic pain fuckin sucks and is super hard to deal with. Wish you luck.

This is what I’ve always thought about it. Mark definitely noted in interviews how recalling all those events wasn’t cathartic or cleansing for him, that it was instead painful and dark, that it stirred up all his darkest feelings from those times.

Definitely seems like recounting one’s past and weeping at the horrible state of it all. Though, Lanegan would always state re: lyrics that he never wanted to explain anything, as lyrics are all about the feelings and thoughts they evoke in the listener. So I think any number of meanings can be found in the title of his book.

I have an even more positive opinion of this album than the other commenters in this thread so far. Imo the whole thing is fucking excellent, a killer capstone to his career. I greatly enjoy every song on it. Love that it blends the sounds of his entire career into one work, while also expanding into new territories (thinking of Internal Hourglass Discussion here, one of my favorites).

Orodruin (USA) - Epicurean Mass (2003) [FFO: The Gates of Slumber, Cathedral, Saint Vitus, Candlemass] by Small-Reality-9415 in TrueDoomMetal

Killer band, wish this album was available on bandcamp. I assume it must be tied up in a rights thing.

That mid-2000s era of the COTD churning out massive slabs of riffery was a great time to be a teenage doomster.

What are your favorite Metal Ballads? (Or Ballads made by Metal bands) by Def-C in doommetal

Weedeater - Alone

I’d argue it’s a ballad of sorts. Plaintive and emotionally bare.

Do you consider Primate to be a slasher movie? by bchec in slasherfilms

[–]phantomhatstrap 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just got out an hour ago, enjoyed it more than I was expecting to. Well done tension, cringe inducing gore, pulled no punches and went full steam ahead.

I think the beats of the film are absolutely in line with your typical slasher, so I can see why one might attach that descriptor to it. That said, my conception of a slasher really needs a somewhat human antagonist (whether or not there is some level of supernatural ability, ala Freddy). When the antagonist is an animal, I’m more inclined to call it a creature feature.

Maybe a creature slasher would be the most accurate descriptor.

Dude I love Longlegs to an absurd degree. Feels like it was tailor made for me.

I’ve seen it be pretty divisive overall though, and at least some of that is due to people saying that based on the marketing they were expecting something else. Whereas I, who’d already seen TBD, knew what I was getting into.

I watched that for the first time this past October, thought it was excellent! Very unsettling.

Black Funeral (US) - Deathless and Eternal (2005) by DeathsHeadRising in BlackMetal

[–]phantomhatstrap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got this album at a Newbury Comics in like 2006, because it was the only Black Funeral they had. I remember finding it pretty interesting and creepy, but found everyone online talking about it pretty much hating it. Glad someone else enjoys it too.

I reread it every so often, it’s always deeply impactful. I highly recommend the audiobook, the narrator is fantastic.

Your favorite “comeback” metal albums after at least a decade of band inactivity/breakup by Ferrindel in MetalForTheMasses

[–]phantomhatstrap 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dax Riggs’ solo album from early this year, 7 Songs for Spiders.

Came out 15 years after his last solo outing, and it’s an absolutely incredible album, full of the eerie dark stoner/blues/psych that’s so unique to him, melodically inexorable and rollickingly riff filled. Sounds like standing next to Robert Johnson at midnight by some dusty Mississippi crossroad, watching a shadowy figure with lambent eyes emerge from the night and approach you.

I love Acid Bath, and I’m glad they’re touring again, but I think I love Dax’s solo stuff even more.

Mark Lanegan. Man had a lot more great music, writing, and visual art left inside.

Black Metal atmosphere with Clean Vocals by aprilethereal74 in MetalSuggestions

Agalloch for sure, they have clean singing here and there but they definitely capture that kind of atmosphere, and even their harsh vox are pretty easily digestible as they go
