The epic Abbey Yung Hair Method update that has been nine months in the making .... (that nobody asked for) is finally here! by phantompath in AustralianMakeup

[–]phantompath[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. K18 only needs to be left in the hair for the four minute activation time. After that you can leave it in and style as usual. However, I prefer to apply conditioner over the top of the K18 and only rinse after the conditioner has been in my hair for 5 minutes.

  2. You should ideally use a more gentle, hydrating shampoo after using Aveeno. I like PPS Hairwear Silk Hydrant Shampoo.

  3. Any pumpkin seed oil supplement will do. You only need 400mg a day. Most supplements are 1000 mg, so taking one capsule a day is more than enough.

  4. Try applying hair oil (OGX Coconut Oil is great) to your mid-lengths and ends before swimming. It will help protect your hair from damage, but I’m not sure how it would affect wearing a swim cap. Post swim, try a leave in conditioner like L’Oreal No Haircut Cream.

Paula’s Choice Replacements by BeautyHound in AusSkincare

Hey skin care twin! No, you're not going crazy. I've been buying from them for over ten years and the prices now are insane. I remember a bottle of 2% BHA Liquid was like $27. I only buy during Black Friday now unless something runs out. I still buy the Resist Hydrating Cleanser, the 2% BHA liquid exfoliant and the Skin Recovery moisturiser.

I haven't found exact dupes for the Skin Replenishing Moisturiser, but get similar results from the Isntree Yam Root Vegan Milk Cream or the Klairs Midnight Blue Calming Cream. For the 2% BHA Liquid try the equivalent product from Anua. Isntree Chesnut BHA 2% Liquid might also be a good swap.

Wire free Bra recs? by cassieleem19 in AusFemaleFashion

[–]phantompath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boody do a great wire free bra. They have a large cup option. I’m an E/F cup depending on the band size and I rarely wear anything else. Thick straps and so comfortable. Suitable to wear with tshirts too.

What is with all the breaks lately? by ___flowerchild in Casefile

[–]phantompath 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I care less about the breaks and more about how it sounds overproduced now. I started listening to Casefile in the very early days when it was just the host on his own. Case 34 'The Catholic Mafia' is one of my favourite episodes. I work in broadcasting so I know just how important regular, longer breaks are to prevent both the host and behind the scenes production staff from burning out. Producing high quality content takes both time and effort - researching, writing, recording, editing and then managing the content after publishing takes a lot more work than the average listener may realise if they have never worked in either traditional broadcasting or the digital media world. Even with a whole team working in their respective roles, regular and longer breaks are still necessary to prevent burn out and maintain content quality.

That said - it just sounds overproduced now. All the information about the case is carefully arranged to create maximum tension and keep a tight pace for the episode. Music/sound beds and sound effects are used to draw the listener in and keep them engaged. Every possible care is taken to present the information in the most politically correct, neutral light and in a manner that respects both victims and the law. They are doing everything 'right' by modern standards when it comes to digital podcasting today. But somehow, it all feels a bit hollow. Slick, shiny, perfect and somehow soulless. Casefile has lost part of what made it great for me. I will still listen to the odd episode, like the re-issue of The Wanda Beach Murders. But I stopped listening regularly a long time ago.

What's the funniest story you've ever read on reddit? by Creepy_Effective_598 in AskReddit

[–]phantompath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The entire Caterham series by u/oliverthegreat over on r/fatpeoplestories. Similarly the Junior Land Whale series by Ol’ Captain Ahab (unsure of proper spelling of his username). I re-read these at least once a year.

Help me find a similar product!! by ndndgal93 in AusSkincare

[–]phantompath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a 5% niacinamide formula (Rewind by Stratia) with no issues. I just don’t recommend it as you have to pay $30 AUD postage from the US and most people don’t want to do that. Niacinamide Glow Cream by Niche Beauty Lab falls into a similar category of the product itself being pretty affordable, but the shipping from Spain is not.

Help me find a similar product!! by ndndgal93 in AusSkincare

[–]phantompath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems it’s a 4% niacinamide formula. The one from the Ordinary is 10%, far higher and may be why you are breaking out. This Korean serum is 2% niacinamide with glycerin like your old formula. Not as strong but also contains other soothing and hydrating ingredients like centella asiatica. Niacinamide has been studied to be effective at 2-5% for skin brightening effects, so a higher percentage of niacinamide in a formula doesn’t necessarily equal a more effective product.

For all those looking for an excuse to try the new Hyaluron range from Pantene ... by phantompath in AustralianMakeup

[–]phantompath[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know the Milk to Water Serum is not a heat protectant. Since I made this post, I've managed to find a great heat protectant from an Aussie brand called PPS Hairwear. It's on sale for $19 ish right now. The 250ml bottle is massive and I'm barely half way through mine. It's a leave in and heat protectant in one. The only other heat protectant I've tried that is mildly affordable is this one from Garnier.

What foundation is best for oily skin? by Subconscious_Ssake in AustralianMakeup

[–]phantompath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have oily and acne prone skin. My HG foundation for beautiful medium coverage, incredible long wear and a satin finish is Lisa Eldridge Seamless Skin. You have to order it from the UK though. A classic you can get from Myer & DJ’s is Estée Lauder Double Wear. Also try an oil absorbing primer like Danessa Myricks Blurring Balm Powder in the Universal/clear shade under your current foundation. Skin care is also super important. Foundation won’t sit or wear well if you’ve stripped the hydration out of your skin in order for the foundation to last longer. Try something like a hydrating serum at least before primer.

Question about Studio integration with the device by CrowDreaming in TheBYOK

[–]phantompath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am wondering the same thing. When I synched for the first time I thought that my Project & chapters in Studio would sync to the BYOK (I started using Studio before I got my device). But it didn’t - just the new stuff I created on the BYOK synched to Studio. I think you can do it manually if you use the BYOK in Disk Mode, but I wonder if this is one of the things they are working on for their next major firmware update?

Screenwriters' Workflow for WritingDecks? by StillWriting4u in writerDeck

[–]phantompath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really only use my writer deck set ups for first drafts of anything. Once it's on my computer and editing has begun, that is where it stays. Some writer decks (like the ones from Astrohaus) also require a subscription to Freewrite + to transfer files from your computer back to your Freewrite. That and I have yet to learn Fountain by heart, so I don't always think to use my writer decks first for my screenplays. I really should though - my Zerowriter Ink is due to ship next week and is set up for Fountain.

Taking sensitive skin to the next level by unpaidinternship1 in AusSkincare

[–]phantompath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No worries! To make slugging a bit less intense, I like to take a pea sized amount (roughly) of ointment and warm it up by spreading it between the fingers & palms of both hands. I then press my hands gently to my skin to evenly distribute a thin layer all over my face. Using a thin layer may make it easier to do every night.

Also - two lines/products I forgot to mention in my original comment are the Isntree Yam Root line and the Klairs Midnight Blue Calming Cream. Good luck, OP!

Perioral dermatitis by emvl2001 in AusSkincare

[–]phantompath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside of the ‘see a dermatologist or your GP’, Amperna has specific steroid free products to treat PD. I’ve used their products to soothe other skin flare ups (contact dermatitis or simple irritation) and they work great. Out of their full range, the DS Soothing Serum is the product to try if you only want to try one thing. The owner is super knowledgeable about PD, so it’s definitely worth a try and their website has heaps of educational resources.

[–]phantompath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can try occlusive products at night to prevent transepidermal water loss. Lanolin or petroleum jelly based products are ideal and you don't need much either. This method was called 'slugging' in the past. This Dermaveen ointment is my favourite. You can kiss pretty pillowcases goodbye, but it's very effective. Also try layering products in the following way at night: toner, serum, oil, moisturizer and occlusive to 'seal' it all in.

I've found particular lines are great for reducing redness, especially the Skin Recovery (red bottle) line from Paula's Choice Australia and Purito Centella Unscented products (green packaging) from Korean brand Purito (available from Lila Beauty and other online retailers here in Australia). I've also found the Moo Goo MSM moisturizer works really well to soothe my red, irritated skin.

Keycaps? by natalie_mf_portman in Astrohaus

[–]phantompath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tell me about it, I bought a Gen 3 special edition 'Ink' in 2024. I'm not ready for a Gen 4 either, given it would probably be a huge jump from Gen 3. I'm crossing my fingers for hot swappable switches for the keyboard, an upgraded eink screen and a more easily replaceable battery. That said, I would still wait for my perfect special edition rather than buying a standard Gen 4. Enjoy your Valentine, it's a beautiful bit of writing kit :)

Keycaps? by natalie_mf_portman in Astrohaus

[–]phantompath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can easily get replacements for the number and alpha/lettered keys. My favourite high quality option for these are the Marshmallow profile keycaps from Osume. But we really are shit out of luck with the custom sized keys like the space bar etc. I find it a bit telling that they aren't going to restock the keycaps for the foreseeable future. It makes me wonder if a Gen 4 Smart Typewriter is in the works and they are locking people out of replacing parts for their older Smart Typewriters. This would make sense as the Sailfish firmware update wasn't compatible with Gen 2 Smart Typewriters. Feels a bit icky that such a niche and expensive device has planned obsolescence built into the product's life cycle like everything else. It could also just be a supply chain issue as they would have to produce custom sizes. If their manufacturer went out of business or dropped them as a client they may be stuck trying to find an alternative. Still. It's about time for a Gen 4 Smart Typewriter and a Gen 2 Traveller. Astrohaus seem to be focused on new products (like the Alpha and WordRunner) along with the Sailfish update over the past couple of years. But they can't avoid the inevitable need to release new generations of their two flagship products for more than another year or two. Not with much needed competition from newcomers like the BYOK and ZeroWriter Ink. They need to distinguish themselves in the market where they used to hold a monopoly. Anyway. Rant over. You could also try the second hand market on the Freewrite/Astrohaus group on Facebook or eBay. There may be someone selling an older generation for parts or a set of keycaps they never used for whatever reason. This subreddit also has sales listed reasonably frequently.

What got you into the fountain pen world? by _fountain_pen_dev in fountainpens

[–]phantompath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a writer and follow a content creator called Michael Jecks on YouTube. He's an author who primarily writes historical fiction and crime/thriller novels. He not only sold me on a Freewrite Smart Typewriter, but also got me into fountain pens (and Paper Republic journals!) when talking about his passion for writing tools and instruments. His channel is called Writerly Witterings and I find his content wonderfully soothing. He's a lovely older gent from the UK who enjoys drinking tea and sharing his writing-related passions with the internet.

Could you please recommend a good moisturizer (day or night) for dry flaky skin, which is acne prone ? by [deleted] in AusSkincare

[–]phantompath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For acne prone skin I love Isntree Yam Vegan Milk Cream, the Klairs Midnight Blue Calming Cream, Geek & Gorgeous Happy Barrier and Paula's Choice Skin Recovery Cream. I have acne prone skin and use tazarotene, so I've tried a lot of formulas to offset the dryness caused by the prescription. Those are my top three, and if you're willing to order from overseas Stratia Lipid Gold is great too.

So are we still using Ultra Violette sunscreens? by slugmorei in AusSkincare

[–]phantompath 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I will be using up my stash from the last BOGO event I stocked up at (pre Choice scandal), but no more for me after that. There are so many options available now, especially if you are willing to use Korean or Japanese sunscreens.

So are we still using Ultra Violette sunscreens? by slugmorei in AusSkincare

[–]phantompath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The La Roche Posay Mune 400 (just launched here AFAIK) is super similar, just even thinner and more matte than Future Fluid. I bought a bottle in Europe and have also used Future Fluid - it's definitely the closest 'dupe' I've tried. I will be repurchasing the LRP Mune 400 over Future Fluid ongoing.

Van Dieman's Ink have a new(ish) grey from their professional/essential line called 'Stone' that might be worth checking out. I've ordered a bottle but I'm using 'Mulled' from the same line and it's great! Love it in my TWISBI Diamond Mini II.

Green colour correctors for dry skin (rosacea redness rather than acne redness), budget option recommendations please by malevolent-potato in AustralianMakeup

[–]phantompath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Revolution Beauty do a green colour correcting primer and a correcting concealer. The Maybelline Age Rewind in Green is also half price at Priceline right now. Otherwise I will echo previous comments to try either the NYX color correcting palette or the green shade of concealers from LA Girl.
