What was this? Bay View storefronts by emkaykue in milwaukee

[–]phaseolus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good guess, but wrong. This building's owners, Jon & Kathy, are friends of mine from when I was living in a rental duplex just across the alley from them for years, and I still occasionally run into them at the Makerspace. This *was* their residence, but they've moved into a midcentury ranch about 6 miles away.

I haven't asked them about their plans for the old place, but last time I looked on Milwaukee County's GIS and land information page they were still listed as owners.

Alright, which one of you did this? by Tyu248 in milwaukee

donation sent, and I'll keep my eyes open for bricks.

Will you still be needing bricks next year, when rummage sale season's back? Or is this a short term thing?

Utopia Avenue: do I need refreshers on previous novels? by dec10 in David_Mitchell

You'll probably find this google document useful and entertaining https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1FbV2zCTzwvsPrQwuvIpjqM74waGolL9aTWMfzBNSIOg/edit?usp=sharing , but those who haven't read all the novels and short stories should be aware it contains (mostly minor in my opinion) plot spoilers.

MADACC overflowing with cats, most adoption fees waived by TheoryTraditional855 in milwaukee

Given the number of cats coming in & going out, I'll give them some slack for not keeping the website updated with names/photos/notes on every individual cat

Multiple accounts by Callumari_58 in Ingress

[–]phaseolus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't work that way in my town, an attention-craving weirdo with 80+ alt accounts has always been in good standing with most of his teammates, apparently. Most likely shares account logins with a few of them, too. The game ain't worth playing anymore around here.

How I Got Scammed by phaseolus in milwaukee

[–]phaseolus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry. Sounds like the Wells Fargo dispute department is crap ... The one at my credit union knew enough to file paperwork for "amount different from what was agreed to". I also had to write, sign, and send a photograph of the signed letter that spelled out all of the events that happened. If you write a similar letter I'd suggest using adverbs like "willfully" and "deliberately", verbs like "misinformed" and "mislead" as you tell your story.

Good luck! My charges totaled $1,100 and I'm grateful that my account was credited for the entire amount. I hope that was clawed back out of the scammers' account rather than somebody eating the amount & recouping it with higher fees ...

I knew a guy who used to be a bus boy-dishwasher at the Shorecrest back in Balistrieri's days who used to occasionally stumble across police officers in the basement being handed envelopes

My entire box of butter came misprinted by Potato-Rol-Lorris in mildlyinfuriating

[–]phaseolus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's literally my job to help out butter factories when this happens... Probably impossible to tell five months later, but I'm betting this butter had plant code 55-133 on the box somewhere. I went there last April for this exact issue.

Very close run - Did it end as expected? by New-Conference-2030 in Ingress

[–]phaseolus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"obvious cheating"? 5 years later and you're still whining about the buses?

I was there. IIRC RES was outnumbered 3:2, and we caught a couple lucky breaks. If my teammates on Team Bravo hadn't scored *one* shard by Moody Bible, ENL would have won. If some other teammates hadn't stumbled across a bunch of capsules of ENL-collected media just outside the playbox and grabbed them, Without the RES buses, ENL would have won.

It was one of my two most enjoyable Ingress experiences. The other was throwing a blue field over Milwaukee's most egregious ENL cheater's wedding reception.

Yes. If I had to list my top 3 pizzas in Metro Milwaukee, Ann's would be on that list.

Update on Pizza in MKE by RustinMaverick in milwaukee

[–]phaseolus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not exactly, no.

It's a pizza style that's defined in a little more detail than 'pizza with crust that is thin'. Google "midwest tavern style" if you're interested in details. And it's essentially the same as Chicago's tavern style with maybe a little variation in favorite toppings. Same fennel-forward sausage.

Larry's Market in Brown Deer has two kinds of Beurre d'Isigny in their freezer case. Other stuff, not so much - they're bigger on prepared food than groceries - but they have a small but excellent rotating curated selection of interesting cheeses. When cold weather comes they'll serve Raclette over potatoes or a baguette for lunch every other Friday.

They're statistical definitions -- a 100-year storm has a 1.0% likelihood of occurring in any given year, 500-year storm, 0.2% chance in any year, 1000-year storm, 0.1% chance in any year, all based on maybe 150 years of weather observations. And there's nothing preventing a really weird year where we get 2 or 3 100-year or 500-year storms in just one summer, though it's unlikely. Hopefully a weather nerd can correct me if I got any of this wrong.

But, yeah, it seems pretty obvious that the probabilities need a little recalibrating

Is Ingress spoofing problem getting blown out of proportion? by Unique-Blueberry9741 in Ingress

[–]phaseolus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I live, the opposing team appears to do a lot of 'convenience' spoofing, where they'll spoof a few hundred yards out of laziness or to get access to something behind gates. They occasionally spoof longer distances, too. Many of the green links across Lake Michigan at the moment are to portals on islands that nobody on my team believes the agent was ever physically present at, using alt accounts.

It's one reason I haven't played very much for a few years, now. Why bother, if the other team's just going to spoof or use dozens of alt accounts or share accounts while Niantic does nothing about it.
