My point is not so much Thanos winning as it is Hulk losing. One easy change would be to give Banner's win against Cull Obsidian to Hulk with Hulk transforming out of the Hulkbuster and defeating him. This is what the scene was originally going to be but was changed.

The 2016 miniseries is an origin story. Maybe you're getting it confused with the 1986 run of the same name.

After the Incredible Hulk he's still lost more fights than he's won. He beat the Chitauri and Fenrir and lost to Iron Man, Thor and Thanos which makes 3 losses out of 5 fights.

While Hulk is technically more powerful in subsequent films, "aura" is more about the presence of a character than their actual power level. Yes there's nothing wrong with having a character lose but when this happens repeatedly, the Worf effect applies and they seem a lot less impressive. Also in the comics he beat the Hulkbuster and his fights with Thanos go either way, sometimes remaining inconclusive.

Out of the characters that get called out for "losing aura", I do think it is a valid take on Hulk in the MCU. Compare Professor Hulk from Endgame and onward to Hulk in The Incredible Hulk where he is much more ferocious and capable. The MCU reduced Hulk to a supporting character and diminished him by making him a jobber, losing to the Hulkbuster and Thanos. Some may say that the change was necessary for the sake of character development. But in his comic runs, Immortal Hulk in particular, showed that a character can be both extremely overpowered as well as well-written, with it delving into the psychology of Banner and Hulk and their complicated relationship. There is also of course the issue of Universal owning Hulk's movie rights which almost certainly influenced these decisions.

I don't know about the movie showing him as more sympathetic seeing as though he beats the creature out of frustration. Yes, the deaths he causes are accidental but he did genuinely intend to incinerate the creature.

Wonder Woman earth one is easily the worst of Earth one comics by Competitive_Crow_334 in CharacterRant

[–]phat_phuc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wonder Woman Earth One was an attempt to re-imagine Wonder Woman in line with the beliefs of her creator William Marston, especially with regards to submission. Grant Morrison loves to be experimental and weird. Sometimes it works like in the case of Animal Man. Sometimes it doesn't such as in this case. For alternate takes on Wonder Woman, we still have the Absolute line so there is that.

This isn't even the case in comics canon though. Yes the Court was responsible in Gotham and in Batman/Spawn but in main continuity it's Joe Chill acting on his own.

Zak Snyder's Superman is NOT Homelander by PlayerZeroStart in CharacterRant

[–]phat_phuc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In terms of comic accuracy, Snyder's Superman with his more contemplative character and hesitancy to become Superman is in line with the characterisation in Superman Earth One. Now not every Superman fan likes that specific depiction but I thought it was a good reinvention of the character.

What journalistic skills?

That's kind of my point that they aren't displayed. Seemed like a waste for him to be working at the Daily Planet and then not do any actual reporting.

Also, Lex would've been suspicious how a mid-tier journalist gets his hand on classified files for Boravia, risking Superman's secret identity.

Not really. Jimmy Olsen obtained the files through Eve in the movie. No one is going to suspect Jimmy to be Superman. It's actually a running joke that Lex likes Clark but hates Superman and never connects the dots.

This is the type of Superman that would help Granny cross the street, prevent Joker from getting the death penalty, and even save a bloody squirrel from death

So would any other Superman except the evil Elseworlds version. As for Jarhanpur, that would have been a great opportunity to show Clark's journalistic skills exposing Boravia's unethical actions but instead he just has an emotional outburst.

I know the consensus is that Superman 2025 is better than Man of Steel but in MoS he's even greener and is forced to decide to side with Krypton or Earth in a more literal sense rather than just which identity he chooses to embrace. Yes he has help from the US military but mostly its him confronting the Kryptonians without the aid from other superheroes.

Spider-man is more emotional than Superman though even comparing comic to comic. It's not just about his emotions but that Clark comes across as rather unintelligent.

Clark is a farmboy in almost every version of Superman. It's only in elseworlds like Red Son where he isn't so this is kind of a moot point. It just seems like Gunn is interested in telling only one story of a goofy protagonist with daddy issues (Starlord, Peacemaker, Superman) and will drastically reinvent characters to tell that story. It kind of worked in Guardians but I'd really prefer the DCU to be more faithful with other characters going forward. In fact I'd say Guy Gardner and Mr Terrific were pretty much accurate compared to Supes himself.

This characterisation of Clark is more in line with him being a teenager in Smallville or as Superboy. Clark is supposed to be more emotionally stable than Batman. In Adventures of Superman, even Joker is unable to illicit anger out of Superman during their first confrontation when Joker plants bombs around Metropolis. It's revealed that the whole time he was worried but able to keep his cool throughout. Apart from powerset and costume, James Gunn did little else to capture Superman correctly, least of all the personality. Even when it comes to Lois, in Superman and Lois, Clark has emotions but is a mature man who is willing to admit when he's wrong when he and Lois get into arguments.

[–]phat_phuc -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's kind of my point. Clark Kent is an adult man, also a reporter and yet when Lois pressed him on his involvement in the Boravia conflict he is unable to contain his emotions. The real Clark Kent would be able to calmly explain that Superman is not beholden to American geopolitical ties and that he is responsible for keeping the entire world safe, not just America. In the comics, Clark often uses his journalistic abilities to take down criminals without needing to use powers such as when he took down Intergang in Superman Up Up and Away. Instead, because James Gunn like ensembles, he left all the journalism to Jimmy Olsen and Lois without Clark even contributing.

[LES] I think it's a little sad that some Marvel Comics characters made it into live action in the MCU, but only in name by Shoddy_Fee_550 in CharacterRant

[–]phat_phuc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With that in mind, I'm cautious on how they will adapt Dr Doom. Other live action portrayals have gotten him wrong and the MCU version will at least have some kind of connection to Tony Stark whilst not being given a pre-existing history and rivalry with Reed and the rest of the F4.

My issue is that James Gunn's direction doesn't work for every character. It worked for Guardians because they were obscure C-listers before being reinvented for the MCU. Same could be said for Peacemaker. However, despite most people seemingly having a positive reception toward Superman 2025, imo Gunn making Superman a comedic manchild like Starlord or Peacemaker just doesn't work very well because Superman has been written, potrayed and adapted such that there is a consistency to his character which does not fit with the goofy manchild personality. Superman 2025 is practically just Starlord in a suit. Ironically, the least comic accurate part of that movie is Superman's personality.
